I . .,' -- . l 1 . .1 SENIOR PROPHECY BY TAHOMA HEMINGWAY In the personal column of the world s largest newspaper, Atascadero News, for June 9 1964, we were surprised to notice the names of a number of graduates of the class of 44 There was also a notice that Madame Nellie Baro the famous pianist singer is scheduled to appear at the La Moda Opera House for two weeks running Mrs john Hazard, the former Wmme Akers, was seen in tovsn shoppmg at the Lucien Fritz: Ann Lelong Shop Col and Mrs Hazard were also house guests at the hxme of Mr and 'VIrs Dave Greenaway fthe former Blondie Andrewsb while m town The afternoon was spent flying in the Greenaways little fly about, stopping at the Atascadero Natlonal Hospital to see Margie Henderson, who ns now head nurse Mrs Greenaway had installed in her home that amazing new feature, a Husbavlsor which enables her to keep track of Dave at all times When she completes paying off the in stallments on this fixture, she vull IDX est ln an attachment which vsarns the husband before he does something It says No the first time, if unheeded, pmches, and then if no results shoots rm Of course you wouldnt believe this important IIN entzon had been designed by none other than Earl Adams and Ernest Van Matre of our class A clever bunch, that class of 44 Oh yes and the other day whxle walking down Atascadero and Vine, Dorothy Cuppers, the Blond Bombshell from AUH S was seen riding around in Rusty Hunters new super Adllac Convertible Of course you know how news gets around, and we found they had spent the eve ning in the Rose Room at the Carlton Hotel It 15 rumored they are keeping quite steady company Did you see that story in Life about Senator Jim Cornelius who invented that famous Hot Rod Cooler the new garage in which you can put your helicopter away without bringing lt dovvn to earth? Thrs is bringing in quite a sum of money but as he didnt take Economics, he can t figure out whether he IS getting Real Income or Psychlc Income, and has gone on a diet of him a chance to get away from xt all Especially if Secretary Sue James IS along with her little notebook That other famous tvun, Jennings Van Matre, who has been running as the Democratic candidate for President against Betty Southwick Republican is also vsorkmg on the problem of getting back up to your helicopter after parking it Sheriff Irene Day head of the one man posse after the Burgermerster Kid who IS reported in the vicinity of South and Canteen Street, said she almost has him just a matter of months. Miss Bobsin, a tutor at the Berlmonte School for Brams has just returned from Marne where she spent the nlght to attend a concert of Harmonica Players Upon being asked about what had become of her old gang she said she saw Shirley fWebberj Albert and her family plcmckmg out at the Atascadero Lake National Park Shirley should graduate from the U of Cal this term Billie Hall and her husband, Norman, have returned to their ranch ln Killeen, Texas, after a visit wlth Mr and Mrs Charles Langley fTahoma Hemingwayj, and the Langley Qumts. The Qulnts are all boys and look just like their father, Billie said Henrietta Estrada and Rita Villa will settle down in their little mansion nn Pozo just two blocks from the Brown Derby after serving overseas 5 years in the WAMS General Ted Waddell and Virginia Parlet have fmally decided to get married and settle down as he IS now retired and they can spend all their time alone and continue their hobby of mounting insects, which they have both gone buggy over That certamly must have been a romantic class, from the looks of the marriage license bureaus Bob Rhodes and his wife, Janice and Louis Mack, with his charming wife, Evelyn Guy, have decided to live together ln one big house, as Louis IS afraid to be alone with Evle Our one tried and true bachelor, Ramon Patterson, says Ill never never marry a woman. SENIOR HISTORY BY WINOLA AKERS In September 1940 fxfty two green Freshles were welcomed to A U H S After a large class of Senxors welcomed us ln thelr own way we felt we really belonged here Under the able dlrectlon of Mrs Bxshop and hir Ewxng we got off to a good start The ramlest season of many years was clxmaxed on the stormlest night by a successful Freshman dance w1th refreshments floor show and brand new records We started our Sophomore year out wxth a skatmg party follow ed by a success ful candy sale Because of blackout regulatlons we gave the fxrst afternoon dance, whxch proved to be qulte a success After our dance we treated ourselves to a weenle bake We ended our Sophomore act1v1t1es by glvlng a dance wlth the Swmg Band supplymg the rhythm As unlors we declded to sell candy durlng the noon period whxch was a great help to our class treasury The proceeds from our unlor dance the President s Birth day Brawl were grven to the March of Dunes The umor Senlor Promenade was held at the Atascadero Lake The hall was cleverly decorated to resemble an old Eng lrsh tavern At last we were the Hrgh and MlghtlCS After we had lI'lltl3.fCd the Freshmen to our satrsfactlon we gave them a grand receptxon In anuary we gave a strlctly formal Mxd Wmter Ball May 18th we enjoyed a chlcken barbecue Our deep apprecratxon goes to Coach Ewmg who has been our class adviser for four years and to Nlxss Worden who has been wlth us for three years When weve had trouble or problems they always have been rlght there for us to go to and, wlth thelr krndly and helpful advlce, we ve weathered many storms Many of our classmates are graduatlng with honors thxs year lvlargle Hender son, Enola Andrews and Shlrley Albert are on the C S F and Enola and Shirley are Seal Bearers or llfe members of the C S F Nellle Baro Peggy Powers James Cornelxus, Enola Andrews, Tahoma Hemmg way Margie Henderson and Jennmgs Van Matre are all gettlng Servlce Awards Wmnle Akers and Jxm Cornelxus are recexvlng the Frlendly Comrade Award As the end of our high school days draw near we are lookmg forward to Bacca laureate, June 4th, but most of all to Commencement June 8th We take wlth us four years of precxous memorles, and a deep feelmg for our Alma Mater and her faculty ' I u I I , . . 1 1 1 ' , - . .. . . I H- 1. v 1 A 'aid' Sf ' I in BUYS SPORTS BY RALPH KUNKEE At the beglnnmg of the year the chances for boys sports of any kind looked very slim First of all, there could be no interscholastic games because of tire and gas ratlonmg Second all athletic equlpment was very scare However, Coach Ewlng reassured us by telling us that the athletic equipment he had, although somewhat lim ited was in fairly good shape Also we wouldn t have to worry about games H w as going to schedule intramural games ln all sports '1 his would give us more games and give more fellows a chance to play than in other years With this in mmd we opened up the sports year with football practice It took us quite a while to get over our clumsmess Our first practices looked very bad but it wasn t long before the teams were in pretty good shape 'Iwo te lms w ere chosen in each of the fifth and sixth periods Because of the manpower shortage six man foot ball was plaved The games were scheduled on Thursday afternoons School was let out early, and once or twice the band was out fhxs gave the games a footballlc at mosphere 'I he games were run in a round robin, each team playing every other team 'led Waddell s team of the sixth period was winner of the round robin, but Garcia s w as a very very close second After this was run off, each period chose one team from the group composed of the best players These were known as The All Stars The captain of fifth period s team was B111 Searle Sixth period s captain was Roy Garcia A set of two out of three games were played between these two teams Searle s took the first game, but Garclas won the last two Thrs made sixth period the all around winner as far as football was concerned According to an agreement made before evening at the cafeteria It was a turkey dmner with all the trimmings After the dmner football movies were shown Also, Garcia w as voted as the best all around football player of the year YVe played some interscholastic football after all Two games were played with Templeton We Won both of these games After football we went to basketball There were two basketball leagues, the Pony Le Que, composed mostly of Cs, and the Do nut League composed mostly of A s and B s There were one or more teams in each perlod These games were also run as round robms Two sets in each league were run The Reds fPatterson sl and the Skunlts QGoulds were the eventual wmnexs In basketball also we were able to plav some rnterscholastxc games We played Templeton and San Luis Obispo one game each, losing both of them However, the only practice together the school team had w as one mght a week when we played the town team After basketball we had a few weeks of boxing We came out of that with only the bloody noses of Earl Adams and Orville Brazzl, and the knocked out tooth of Bob Rhodes Then we Jumped into something less harmful but just as strenuous badminton Partners were chosen and games run in each period Champions were picked ln each group but as vet the school championship hasn t been run off M1XCd in wlth had mmton was some tumbling rolls flips head stands, etc VVC then went back outside to the fresh air, sunshine and baseball Flrst we had a few weeks practice We played the baseball games during activity period and noon ohn Proud s team was victorious They defeated Rupert Toledo s team, Le Roy Dodge s, and Donald Ayres In the meantime we started track practice We had about a month of th1s, then on May 4th, we had the intramural track meet School was let out in the afternoon Records for the 50 yard dash, pole vault, and broad Jump were broken that afternoon B111 Wharff was high polnt man for the Cs Bill Kelley for the B s, and Jim Cor nellus for the A s Sixth period received the highest total of pomts An interscholastic track meet was held with San Luis Obispo on the 12th of May We managed to make a total of 126 pomts to their 123 John Webber made a new record in the pole vault for Atascadero by going 9 9 At the time this goes to press there about three weeks of sports left After track, we will have a few Weeks of swimming and this will wind up the sports for 1943 44 In sp1te of the obstacles we can all agree that this was one of the best years of sports A U H S. had ever seen 9 . . , . , , a , B l ' . . . y Y Y , , , , . . e . ' , L- Y V1 - v 1 ' 'Q - 1 SERVI G THEIR COU TRY BY DONALD Ars Dxews AND LEROY Donors This years Santa Lucza includes a special page for Servicemen This page is dedicated to the boys who have graduated from our school and who are now serving w 1th the armed forces, and to those w ho have left school ln order to join Since there are graduates from as far back as 1925 in the service, it has been ex tremely difficult to keep an accurate record of each one For this reason the list We haye here compiled may not be altogether complete If there is any name missing from this list that should be here, we would be happy to receive information regarding this person YVe have giy en here the branch of seryice and year of graduation of all the boys we haye been able to secure adequate information about In providing this page, we of Atascadero High School Join in paying tribute to our fellow members of classes past and present who are actively defending our free dom and our way of llfe For the purpose of keeping the boys overseas in touch with each other, the Hill top New sletter was established Following the suggestion of Cpl Ted Pearson of the Nlarmes, we investigated the paper that Cal Poly was producing for their alumni in the service and the result was our own Newsletter Letters to the editors from fel lows all oyer the World are published in the paper and sent to every one of our boys, wliet er he be in a trammg camp in this country or in the jungles of a South Pacific 3f0 Lt Lorxs C Cglesby of the U S Navy, former mstructor in science, photography no y somewhere in the P3.ClflC He first began teaching here in the year 1937 He directed dramatic activities and produced a good many successful plays In the past year he has been promoted from the rank of Lieutenant Cy g J to Lieutenant The death of B111 Hone who passed away Sunday, lNIay 28 in the Naval hos pi al at San Diego, w as the first, as a result of battle wounds among our graduates He succumbed to lnyurles received in action in the South Pacific Born in Columbus, Ohio, he soon came west to Atascadero, where he finished grammar school After graduatlng here in 1933 B111 had two years at Cal Poly be fore enlisting 1n the Navy Following the completion of his four years there he went into the Naval Reserve However, when w ar broke out he again went back lnto active service Bill had been awarded three gold stars and one silver, and was recommended to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor This year we suffered our first loss with the death of Lt Harry Searle, killed in a plane crash while on patrol duty in Panama A Senior of the class of 1942 Harry was an exceedingly popular student He possessed an outstanding personallty for which he will be remembered by everyone who knew him Before coming here m early 1941 he attended a military academy 1n New York His ability to express himself, his versatility, and h1s willingness to partlclpate ln most anythmg made him much in demand and well liked Lt Norman Pierce of the Army Air Corps was reported missing IU March It is now confirmed that he is a prisoner of war in a German camp He IS the second of our boys to be taken, Joe McKus1ck having been a captlve of the Japanese smce the fall of Bataan IH early 1942 7 , l . . .
