BIARY 'VRACE Principal ls Message ln these times of crisis the most valuable contribution that students can make to our Country is to prepare themselves for the job that is at hand as well as the work that lies ahead. The youth of our land must take advantage of every opportunity to develop to the fullest their capacities and abilities, that they may better be enabled to serve their country in this hour of great need. Our boys and girls have gone forth in the service of our country. Be it ours to help them hold high the banner of service for we must not only win this wary we must help to secure a just and lasting peace for the future. 55543 5 2 L-3 FACULTY 9' . vii, X1 L wf 'x Rov D. The officers and committees of our class made an outstanding success of the year. The first so- cial event of the year was a junior Dance, which went over in a big way. Instead of a Prom for the Seniors, we gave them a barbecue. CLASS WILL DONALD MOORE: b. Aftascadero, Calif., F1-li. 17, '25: gr. EXECUTIVE CGUNCIL Our Executive Council held its first meeting of the year on Sept. 21, 1942 and this proved to be a red letter day in the history of A.U.H.S. because from this meeting emerged perhaps the most brilliant and active Council since the founding of our school. And this was an act of fate, too, because had these members been of an inferior and lazy nature, they would not have withstood the flood of problems which have faced them since that notable morning. Take, for example, that little incident about our negligence in using the walk which was prepared for our convenience in walking to and from town. What did our Council do? They simply met on the morning of September 23, 1942, and decided to post on the bulletin board the pictures of those who persisted in this practice, so that all might behold the offenders in their glory. Of course even this didn't pry into the pride of all, but it did have noticeable results. And then there was the squabble which arose over the Seniors' reception of the Freshmen. It seemed that most Seniors desired to have their shoes polished and shined by the Freshmen, just the way they had been required to do when they were Freshmen. Now our Council seemed to agree that this wasn't too severe, that is, if it wa.sn't car- ried to extremes. So our Council went into their chambers of judgment on the morning of September 23, 1942, and emerged a few minutes later with a grant to this request. The only amendment was that the Seniors should provide their own shoe polish so as to prevent the eradication of some of our Freshmen's funds. The Council also ruled that the money which was to be used for the reception of the new Freshmen, be taken from the general fund as has been the practice in the past. Perhaps the most useful service performed by the Executive Council this year was providing for the erection of bicycle stands for the use of students. The number of bicycles being brought to school has increased daily since the scarcity of tires and gastr line has become prominent. lndeed they were even beginning to give our school a clut- tered look until the Executive Council stepped in and produced a solution. Bicycles were seen in every conceivable nook and one could hardly walk without the fear of collision. However, soon after a committee had made a special report of the condition to our Council, at the meeting of October 5, 1942, there appeared a set of very badly needed bicycle stands in an obscure, but nevertheless handy location. Yes, indeed, whether we have noticed it before or not, we do have a good repre- sentation of our school in our Executive Council. I. 9 3 4 5. The officers for the first half were: Erma Jean Frame, presidentg Janice Mc- Donald, vice presidentg Chesterlyn Kilbern, secretary, and Yvonne Roberson, recorder. For the second semester the same council was re-elected except that the position of secretary was given to Betty Southwiclc. The council decided that the interclass games would be changed to period games: each period's winning team would play the next period until the champions were found. The first sport of the season that was played was basketball. The 6th period really came through by beating both 4th and Sth period teams all the way through. The last game? score was 12 to 6. To prove to everyone that they were truly champions, the 6th period challenged the Ladies' Town Team in two games and were really victorious with the scores read- ing 12 to 4 and I6 to 6. After the excitement of the basketball games the girls took up volleyball with just :Ls much vigor. The Sth period team showed their ability at playing volleyball by com- ing out on top behind their captain, Helen Jaster. The last sport to be taken up was baseball which had not been completed at the time of this writing. But the -lth period team has proved very good. so they're entitled to their pictures in this annual. All the girls are looking forward to a play-day which will be held in the near future under the direction of Miss Doser, G.A.A. instructor. There were many girls who were awarded letters and three won sweaters or pins. The girls having 800 points received large orange A's and the girls with 1,000 points had their choice of sweaters or pins. It-CSF I -ts Girls' League Meeting Gerry Camenon G.L. Our F.F.A. has been working toward the war effort in a big way. Under the leadership of Klr. Gills, their sponsor, they have succeeded in enlarging their activities to capacity, so that maximum service to their country may be rendered. Boys have been using a large part of their school time for vital work rather than classroom work. ln one of the pictures above can be seen a boy at work on the F.F.A.,s John Deere tractor. This particular picture was taken at the strawberry patch, where the boys have been spending a great deal of time lately. Other pictures show boys working with a few of the many boxes of young plants which they bave been raising this year. This has really been a great help to the war effort, due to the shortage of laborers. These small plants are raised in boxes inside the Agriculture Building and then are transplanted in the fields or gardens. Actual farming isn't all that our F.F.A. boys are doing, however. They are also working in the school's shop, learning to give good care tothe hard-to-get farm implements, and also learning to repair them should they happen to break. Due to the shortage of implements, this is indeed a wonderful thing to know. Financially speaking, the F.F.A. is over the top. So well have they done this year, they have been authorized by the school board to purchase themselves a tractor, harvester, and bailer. These purchases will probably be delayed, due to the war, but they have been authorized. har INTRAMURAL 1.-Champions. 2.-Whoa, Junior. 3.-Lonesome Stranger. 4.-Straight Arm. ,., - ARMY Due to lack of transportation we were not able to play interscholastic football.
