Promoting harmony between employer and employee lends no small part to the smooth running ot business necessary to the war effort. lt takes real patriatic zeal and vigor to diligently help to win the war and also keep lessons up to par. Mr. Cox has advised this club's activities for three years. The officers directing the group ot thirty-three this year were Ken Mattson, presi- dent, Jaxon Chadsey, vice-president: John Salisbury, secre- tary, and Hugo Sirnonson, treasurer and sergeant-at-arms. ln addition to the traditional keeping of the score board at games, the club members were represented at the vocational conference in Portland this year.

'ill- ,...-ff' imi fi llllll DEFENSE SCHGGL Only by special permission and with an official escort, was Mr. Larson allowed to take this picture of the students at work in the defense school Mr Charles Gibson former A H S teacher is the director of this project SI-IGP To fulfill the governments request the students in the shop have devot ecl much of their time to making many different types of model air planes They are shown at work in the pictures at the left MANUAL ARTS Through the Manual Arts class the students have learned to make blue prints and various other proyects which will aid them in future par ticipation in the war effort The students seen drawing at the left are under the direction of Mr Cox AUTCD MECHANICS Another new class that has been of fered to the boys of Astoria high is the auto mechanics class at the Lovell garage The preliminary training that the boys receive there will help then to be mechanics and technicians in the armed forces Some of the boys are shown learning the parts of a machine Meet Duke CARPENTRY Carpentry which was introduced into Astoria high last year has given the bo s training building modl houses The boys shown here are working on the models Mr Cox dl rects this proiect also 7
