Ninety- eight per cent of Room Seven's student taxes were col- lected by Iivewire Gerry Weaver. Something interesting was carried on by the sophomore boys this year. A council was formed to make sure that the sophomore traditions of cleaning halls, shining seals, washing blackboords, and emptying wastebaskets were main- tained. Members of this group were president, Charles Bergman, Duane Gustafson, Bob Kendall, Don Hogg, Howard Phillips, Vance McKenny, Dwight Smart, and Merle Thornton. The Beta Chapter of the Hi-Y's, originated in l94l and advised by Glenn Burch, County Librarian, donated a considerable sum to the War Prisoners' relief fund. Using a small class room as a music room wasn't easy, but that was nothing compared to competing with the gym classes next door. However, the stu- dents and their director were not dismayed by these circum- stances, and they soon put the department in to working order and produced some very fine programs, including a patriotic assembly. This program honored the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln and was composed of songs popular in their days. First Row: Berry, Vliislliiliii, Slwvts. This was the beginning of a string of four victories that ended the season for Astoria. The Fishermen rode to Salem and plastered the Vikings with a 27 to 8 score. Still unsatisfied with the last two victories, Astoria cracked Seaside wide open on a muddy field, to come through with a 34 to 6 win. Finally, with half of the school at Tillamook to watch the pro- ceedings and to pep its team onward, the Fighting Fishermen nung up their fourth win in a row and their sixth of the season, by over-powering the Cheesemakers in a tight-fought game l4 to 7. Coach May deserves unspeakable credit for the fine task of shaping a group of boys into such a scrap-iron team.
