Left . . . Besides Miss Friedrich's supervision of room twenty-six and her commercial classes, she teaches Eng- lish and is a Junior class adviser. Miss Friedrich is an alumna of Astoria high. Right . . . Miss McCann, several years ago, taught Eng- lish in Astoria high. Now she specializes in typing and shorthand. In addition to directing roll room seventeen, she is a senior class adviser. Kathleen Weaver, Shirley Mattson, Louise Blair, Barbara Brakke, Gertrude I-lelstrom, and Barbara Everhart watch closely and then some as Miss Lamb explains an intricacy or so in the second year Shorthand class. Each girl is heading for a Private Secretary career with its inevi- table end. Zipping along at an alarming rate of speed on the new Royal typewriters, Teddy Nelson, Noanie Morrison, Janet Wilson, and Jeanette Urell fondly and fervently hope their fingers are on the right bank of keys. The typing classes are the most popular in the school, and it is a very lucky non-commercial major who finds a berth in room 24. One of the chief delights of the bookkeeping pupils are the adding machines which are here seen in action with Vivian Bergsten and Louise Blair at the controls. Helga Heikkila, Elaine Voss, Hazel Waris and Miss Friedrich watch the progress and wish they had met up with the interesting little contraption along about the seventh grade, say. ln the Salesmanship class Donna Mars is showing the boys just how to do it. Ray McCallister, Max Seppala, and Laddie Engbretson can think of no pleasanter way to find out the why's and wherefore's of putting oneself across to the customer. This new class carried on many interesting projects and is a destined success.

7-lze Gommefzcial Depafzfmenf ln as much as there has never been a time when there was a greater demand for those who can type, do stenographic work, or keep books, it is most fitting that the Zephyrus pay trib- ute this year to our Commercial department and its head, Miss Vesta Lamb. Astoria high school is fortunate in having Miss Lamb as the head of its Commercial department as she is exceptionally well qualified for the position, having majored not only in commerce, but also in the languages, and having had actual experience in office work. Recently Miss Lamb visited the Gregg school in Chicago, and last summer she attended the University of South- ern California, where she was enrolled in the Commercial college. The other members of the Commercial teaching staff are Miss Mary McCann, a graduate of the University of Washington, and Miss Anna Marie Friedrich, a graduate of the Univer- sity of Oregon. These two and Miss Lamb take care of the most popular department in school. Miss McCann instructs in the fundamentals of typing and shorthand, while Miss Friedrich specializes in bookkeeping. On Miss Lamb falls the responsibility of the advanced courses and the newly introduced class in Salesmanship and Buymanship. Edna Landro has this year filled the position of manager. Edna, together with Hilda Gimre, the assistant, has kept the Ex- change well in hand and, with the help of Miss Lamb, the adviser, has met the needs of all students well. J -, gupefzinfendenf Q. Hampton For sixteen years Superintendent A. C. Hampton has been an all-round school administrator in Astoria. Besides attending to those activities that directly relate to his official duties and the curricular affairs of the secondary school, Mr. Hampton is a loyal friend to the high school boys and girls and enters enthusiastically into their extra curricular activities. None is more pleased or cheers any more sincerely than Mr. Hampton when the Fishermen exhibit the good old fighting spirit. No one is more genial than he at the annual senior banquet, especially during toasts, and no one is more willing to help pupils find a place in this big, wide world than he. When Superintendent Hampton arrived in Astoria, he was confronted with the problem of organizing the Junior Highs, in which undertaking he suc- ceeded admirably. Another more recent project that is credited to him is the return to the yearly basis program. Being a graduate of Oregon State Normal school as well as the University of Oregon, Superintendent Hampton is familiar with the work from the ground floor up to the top. ln l902 he took advanced work in the University of Chicago. He keeps abreast of the educational trends through his active interest in professional organizations, having served as president of the Oregon State Teachers' Association and the Inland Empire Educational Association. He is now president of the State Organization of city superin- tendents and of Clatsop County Literary Board. Every two or three years Mr. Hampton goes East to attend National School Administration meetings. Along with all his educational activities, civic duties, and what nots, he still is the Astoria High pupils' friend.
