pfzincipal 5. D. Towlea Above is seen Mr. Towler as the pupils and faculty see- him every day, busily presiding in the office, clearing up misunderstandings, administering justice, or taking time to chat, in his friendly manner, with those who happen in. For one who is not a native Oregonian, Mr. Towler is very well acquainted with Astoria High's ways and customs. Born in Illinois and educated in the South, Mr. Towler came directly from the Service to Oregon. After holding the office of principal for thirteen years in La Grande, Oregon, Mr. Towler arrived in Astoria on March 20, l932, to take up the principalship here. ln the nine years that he has been here, Mr. Towler has kept the school on a modern basis, introducing new subjects as needs have arisen, building up departments that were weak, stepping up club activities, encouraging a desirable admin- istration--pupil support, and maintaining a high quality of student morale as is evidenced in the weekly assemblies, and a type of school spirit that has won Commendation over the state. Mr. Towler's activity record as a one time president of the Oregon State Teachers' Association, of the High School Principals' Association, of the County Unit of the State Teachers' Association, and of the Clatsop County School Masters Club speaks the esteem in which he is held by the State educa- tors. For the past two years he' has taught summer school at Oregon State College. Although Mr. Towler has many outside civic interests, such as Kiwanis and American Legion, he is always willing to advise and straighten out pupil troubles.
