History of Astoria's Schools .n 1832 the f1rst schoolhouse was erected 1n Astoria This was located in the East part of town Tins f1rst school was taught by Martm Fast and Davxd and John McNeLl In 1850 another buxlding was erected on a lot where the Lloyd Fisk residence is now situated When th1s was no longer sultable school was carr1ed on U1 an old store burldmg This practrce was tn use untxl about 1856 when a new structure was erected Pr1or to 1856 the schools were not free but the parents pa1d for their children to attend In a few years another bu1ldmg was erected on our present grounds The new one was known as the West and the old one was known as the East Building Both bulldings were used for awh11e but when the East buxldmg was no longer suitable the grades moved to a building where the town hall now stands In 1879 our crty school was graded by E R Boyer and a regular course of study was adopted Mr Boyer s assrstants were john Palmer grammar department Rose Ander son xntermedrate department, and Dolly Kost prlmary department In 1883 the bullding burned and the term was fmished m the dlfferent churches john H Lear was pr1nc1pal at the time Also ln 1883 the board of directors was changed into a board of educat1on After the West buxlding burned a two story budding was erected on the same ground Th1s proved too small to accommodate all the pupmls and another was bullt The two buildmgs caused dlssatlsfactlon and the East burldmg was sold A th1rd story was then added to the West buildmg Th1s buxldmg proved adequate untrl 1917 when our present buxlding was erected The whole community felt proud of the bu1ld1ng and claimed that It was then one of the finest U1 the commun1ty In 1954 a new hlgh school building was erected in the north east part of town Melvin Gain was president and H S Bucher was secretary The whole community felt proud of the new bu11d1ng The superintendents who have had charge of the school in the present bulldxngs are H M Anderson 1918 21 T S McK1bbon 1922 23 J T Pmkerton 1923 24 H C Re1chel1924 25 J E I-lulet 1925 28 F E Glize 1928 29 T W Everett 1929 1938 K C Cunnmgham1938 1940 L R Skmner 1940-42 L D Sprague 1942 43 D M Fea gans 1943 52 L K Ward 1952 58 Thls wlll be the seventy sixth commencement of the Astorra I-hgh School The frrst class was graduated m 1882 William Burgard was president, and Sidney Baldry, secretary of the board.
