Semor HISIOIY In September 1953 fifty one green Fresh1es entered A H S We were a 11tt1e fr1ghtened at f1rst and had a 11ttle d1ff1culty m locating our classrooms ln1t1at1on came late but wasn t nearly so bad as we had thought It would be The sophomores gave us a dance to show us there wasn t any hard feelmg We gave them a return dance later After becommg acquamted w1th our classmates we elected the followmg off1cers for the year Pres1dent Wanda Olson V166 Pres1dent Marc1a La1rd and Secretary and Treasurer Don 4F1eld Our class sponsors were Mrs Reeves and Mr Mik1ta Several of our boys went out for sports and three of our g11'1S were cheerleaders Our mus1cal ablllty was also demonstrated by havmg several mn the band and xn chorus We were glad to rece1ve f1ve new members Marc1a La1rd Roger Poppenhager Arlene and Sam Smlth and Ph1ll1p Morr1s We were however very unfortunate 1n los1ng four of our class membf rs We were fortunate 1I1 wmnmg 2nd prlze on our float that year wh1ch was M1ss Un1verse As we look back over our first year 111 high school lf makes us want to go back next year and renew both old and new acquamtances In September 1954 we agam entered the doors of A H S only III a brand new bu1ldmg w1th an enrollment of forty f1ve Soon after school began we wlected new off1cers as follows Pres1dent, Don F1e1dS VICE Pres1dent joan McMullen Secretary Wanda Olson Treasurer Marc1a La1rd Ou.r class sponsors were Mrs Tr1mpe and Mr F1shburn After we were settled we m1t1ated the freshman w1th the help of the Student C0l1I1C11 and gave them a party Agam that year we were well represented m sports cheerleadmg and other act1v1t1es We won 3rd pr1ze on our float wh1ch was Th1s Old House ln August 1955 we agam entered the Astor1a Hlgl School Th1s year we had narrowed down to th1rty-e1ght members 111 our class The followmg off1cers were elected PICSI dent Don F1elds Vice Pres1dent joan McMullen Secretary Mary Ann Baker and Trea surer MHICI3 Laird Mrs W1lson Mr Lew1s and Mr F1shburn were our sponsors for th1s year Th1s year many of the boys went out for sports and we had several class members III chorus and other act1v1t1es Sh1rley Brown Wanda Olson and Phyl11s Welker were chosen varslty cheerleaders from our class On May 12 we entertamed the sen1ors w1th a prom ln the school gym The gym was decorated 1I1 aqua and wh1te and our theme was Neptune s Parad1se Th1S was the end of our Jumor year As we entered A H S III 1956 57 for the last t1me we found we were sen1ors We began w1th an enrollment of th1.rty three Our class off1cers were Pres1dent M1chael Bucher V1ce Pres1dent Tony McCombs Secretary V1rgm1a Kmgery Treasurer El1zabeth Beary On November 14 we put on our class play We Shook The Famlly Tree Wnth the help of the play cast other members of the class and under the d1rect1on of Mrs Gwendolyn Whlte our play was a success Our last year at A H S has come to an end but we look forward to our sen1or tr1p graduauon and the begmnmg of an exc1t1ng new future Complunents of ASTORIA GAS 81 ELECTRIC CO O C - vw - u - I I ' 0 1 I . . . . , - . , . . . . . . , . . 0 I I I I , . .
