Hagan will cele¬ brate his tenth year as President of Assumption College. During these ten years he has repeatedly demon¬ strated his dedication and commit¬ ment to the college and its growth as a Catholic liberal arts institution. President Hagan came to Assump¬ tion in 1978 with a long list of achievements, not only as an educa¬ tor, but as a leader as well. Positions he has previously held include hav¬ ing been Vice President of Bryant College, Assistant to the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives, and a college lecturer. A native of Rhode Island, he holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Providence College and Boston University. He has been awarded honorary degrees from Salve Regina and Mount St. Helen Colleges. The President is also active in many edu¬ cational, religious, and civic organi¬ zations and is a dedicated family man as well. He is married to Patri¬ cia O’Malley Hagan and they have one son, Kevin. In the past ten years President Ha¬ gan has implemented numerous changes and programs for the better¬ ment of Assumption College, both structurally and academically. These include reorganizing the Business Office to better serve the college, in¬ creasing the salaries of admin ista- tion, faculty, and staff to a more competitive level, reorganizing the Student Affairs Office to better ad¬ dress the needs of the students, and supporting such programs as Hu¬ man arts and the opening of the French Institute to serve the social and cultural needs of the college and the community. President Hagan has also initiated studies into the curriculum and add¬ ed majors in Accounting and Man¬ agement to the undergraduate pro¬ gram. These majors constitute the largest draw among new applicants. He extablished a Center for Continu¬ ing and Professional Education, which includes a Bachelor of Science degree for Registered Nurses and a Master of Business Administration Program, to better serve the commu¬ nity. President Hagan has remained committed to these programs through the fostering of a caring and dedicated faculty. In the past ten years the President has been committed to the growth and upkeep of Assumption as well, renovating existing buildings and constructing several new buildings. These buildings include the Campus Center, completed in 1984, the new library, which will be ready to use in the Fall of 1988, and several new res¬ idential buildings to house the grow¬ ing resident student population of Assumption. Plans are also being completed for the construction of a Field House, which will enable the Athletic Department to function at a higher level. All this growth has occurred at a time when demographic studies have reported that the number of college- aged students have decreased and many other colleges have needed to cut back in order to survive. Presi¬ dent Hagan has instead been dedi¬ cated to the growth of Assumption and his strong belief in Assumption’s ideals has helped this college to sur¬ vive in the face of such statis tics. ‘But in order to survive, such schools must remain true to the purpose of their founders, be prudent in the management of their resources and be vigorous in seeking support from all who believe in the value of plural¬ istic education in a free society”. This approach is obviously working at Assumption. While other colleges are experiencing a decline in enroll¬ ment, Assumption received over 2,200 applications for admission to 498 freshmen openings in the fall se¬ mester of 1988. This overwhelming number of appli¬ cations alone gives testimony to the fine work President Hagan and his staff have accomplished, and when this is considered in conjunction with the record growth in Alumini and community support that the col¬ lege has experienced the enormity of President Hagan’s accomplishments becomes even more readily apparent. It is for this demonstrated commit¬ ment to the survival and betterment of Assumption College that we the students would like to dedicate these pages of the 1988 edition of the Heights to President Hagan. We would also like to take the opportu¬ nity to offer our congratulations and gratitude to the President, on this the occasion of his tenth anniversa¬ ry. Whether it was Halloween , Christmas, someone ' s birthday, or, as was most often the case, a WEEKEND! All it took to get things started was a few friends, a few drinks, some music, and word of mouth usually managed to do the rest. Even if the Campus Center was dead, the town houses could be counted on for at least a couple of good parties. If you were lucky enough the weekend started on Thursday, usually at Casey ' s, and there were often a few grim faces - as well as a few missing faces - in class on Friday mornings. Then on to the real weekend and some serious partying with your friends. This included quarters games, dancing, and anything else you could think of to help you let off some steam. Saturday was usually spent sleeping of the effects of Friday night and on Sundays it was back to the old homework grind. Cheryl 11 FRIENDS ARE FOREVER i The friends we made here at Assumption will most likely be the source of our happiest memories of college. They are perhaps the greatest gift we have received during the last four years. They helped us through the bad times and celebrated with us through the good. Who else but a friend would spend hours commiserating with us over our last test grade and then treat us to a pizza to ease the pain? Who else but a friend would help us plan a great practical joke to help us get back at our other friends” who “peanut buttered our doors? Who else but a friend would lure us away from the boring monotony of homework to go and have a few beers? Memories of late night gab-fests and pick¬ up basketball games will linger long after the ink on our diplomas have faded. When you get right down to it nothing we have learned here can substitute for the lessons and the love we received from our FRIENDS. 78 FINAL ANXIETY “I cannot believe I waited until the last minute to study a whole semesters’ worth of work!” Even if this was not everyone ' s experience of FINALS at Assumption, you can bet that they caused a lot of anxiety. The Library and the Campus Center were packed with students cramming, trying to remember as much as possible. Tension was pretty high, and even though 24 hour study hours kept the campus pretty quiet, the occasional scream of a frustrated student pierced the air. Yes, FINALS were anything but a time for fun! 1. Some student will try anything to remember! 2. Are they really studying - or just pretending? 3. This guy looks too laid back to be studying for FINALS! 4. Colleen may be smiling on the outside but inside she can not wait for all this Final business to be over! 1. I guess these guys are on the group plan. 2. Please just let me stay awake long enough to Hush this chapter!” 3. “They’re coming to take me away - ho, ha, hee, hee! 4. ‘‘It’s all under control. I’m going to ace this exam!” 5. It’s those Biology majors - studying again! The Bermuda Strollers came, then we almost saw the Strollers. Max Creek came with the Hip Civillians, and WACR hosted a Battle of the Bands. The Fools came back again, and other bands came too! These events tended to be the best attended events on campus, even in the case of the Band (the Strollers) who left without finishing the show.
