On October 31, 1986, students, parents, family and friends all joined together to celebrate Parents Weekend with many Halloween Festivities. With apple cider and hot chocolate available, all were able to cheer on the football team as they played against UMass Boston. Hay rides around campus brought a chatter to many teeth and humorous caricatures by Neil Portnoy were souvenirs of a fabulous weekend. The cafeteria suddenly became the scene of a Qoulish Goulash and the Butlers Ball filled everyone in on actually Who Done it. 6 ..rent:? eekend FtXQAY. Can It was a blustery day in early Movember when the 1987 Yearbook sponsored the third Lip Sync competition. Once again, the turnout was excellent as students were treated to a wide range of musical groups throughout the show. Master of Ceremonies, Edward Murray, mingled with the stars of popular music as Sue Costello, Drew O ' Conner and Conor Maguire awarded scores to all the contestants. First place was captured by the lovely Pointer S sters-Bill Foxx, Steve Raso and Jeff Stewart, who had the audience dancing in the aisles to I ' m So Excited. Sec¬ ond place went to the inspira¬ tional Irish rockers U2 headed by Bono look-alike Kevin Fontaine. The third place prize was award¬ ed to Deb Paquette, Monica Do¬ lan, Norma Waitekus, Kathy Gaucher, Sandy McClellan, Yvette Gosselin, Marlena Maggio and Barbara Bennett, who brought the spirit of the 1950 ' s . to life with their rendition of Beauty School Dropout. 8 This Be MTV?! Rounding out the evening s entertainment was a diverse mixture of groups ranging from the hard driving rock of the Violent femmes and The Police, through a pop standard from Huey Lewis and The Hews to the opposite end of the spectrum with dance numbers from Bananarama and The Bangles. All in all, the event was a huge success raising over eight hundred dollars for the Yearbook and leaving a song on everyone ' s lips ... so to speak. On November 24, Assumption was visited by one of T.V. ' s hottest comics. Jay Leno came to give a hilarious performance between guest appearances on Late Night With David Letterman and The Tonight Show ' . More than 700 students and guests were treated to a rousing two hours packed with laughs and crazy antics in Laska gymnasium. Leno, swapping jokes with the audience, was in rare form throughout the night and lived up to his impressive reputation. Thanks to the efforts of Melanie Demarais and the Student Government Association, Assumption was fortunate enough to CATCH A RISING STAR. The team ' s final overall record was nine wins and seven losses. At the tournament Freshman Carina Dolcino scored an impressive team-high 15 goals. Both she and Junior MVP Ellen Tremper were chosen to continue in post¬ season play at the national All-Star Tournament in Virginia. Despite the strength which still exists in the team with such players as captains Amy Romano and Ellen Tremper, the five graduating seniors will be missed. [© I7LLEGE 1 13 COLLEGE 112 Tri-captains Sue Scanlon, Michelle Loranger and Maureen Flanagan and seniors Karen Glispin and Kim Miller have seen an impressive turnaround since their freshman and sophomore years, during which only 3 games per season were won. Coach Joyce LaBonte suffered through those beginning years with these five women, and their efforts have paid off. Improvement was the key in the Hounds fall soccer season behind senior co¬ captains Bryan Hartnett and Glenn Rattell. Late in the season the Hounds I beat one of Hew England ' s top ten teams, St. Anselm, 1-0, in St. A s only loss of the season. Coach Bill Mahoney praised senior Pete Frankudakis who allowed only 30 goals in 16 games as well as leading scorer, sophomore Rohan Harrison with 7 goals and 7 assists. Three of the Hounds ' losses occured in overtime and they tied up the season 4-10-2. There are high hopes for the ' 87 team which will be lead by agressive new team captain, sophomore Dominic Rawson. Tennis 114 The woman s varsity tennis team proved to possess a driving spirit throughout the fall season. The team ' s members included seniors; Kara Reilly (captain), Karen Brossi, Monica Brynn and Karen Bitar, junior Caroline Kelly, and freshmen; Joanne Flanagan, Gina Perez and Carrie KosacK. All iV. contributed to the successful matches during the season. The highlight of the season came when the team made it into the semi-finals of two tournaments; the northeast and MAIAW invitational conferences. 115 The Lady Hounds experienced their best league record in the 1986-1987 season. The Lady Hoopsters finished the season with a 7-7 conference record and an overall record of 9-16. The Lady Hounds were led by Juniors Barbie Barrett (who will reach the 1,000 point mark early in the 1987-1988 season), Ann Mclnerney, who led the conference in rebounding and field goal percentage. Senior Monica Dolan led the team in assists and steals as Seniors Yvette Qosselin and Debbie Paquette played a solid game throughout the year. Under the first-year coach Bill Bowes, the Hounds struggled home at 9-13-1. Individually, however, Schofield became the first player in Division II-II1 history to reach the 200-point level as a defenseman, while breaking 11 individual records. He ws named all-ECAC for the fourth straight year, and all-Hew England for the second time. Tucci became the all-time leading goal- scorer with 93 goals ... he finished as the team ' s Most Valuable Player and perhaps its most underrated super star ever. Tucci won the Berthiaume Award for above and beyond” and Schofield was cited as the premier male senior student-athlete, the Desautels Award. Barrett pounded away at a .500 pace (73 hits in 146 at bats) with 45 runs, 44 RBI, 31 stolen bases, and 98 total bases. Three players reached the 100 mark in hits including senior Monica Dolan, Barrett, and Ellen Tremper. When family life was the center of existence. The extended Sycamore family, in Manhatten, is extremely eccentric, except for one daughter, the employed one, who induces mayhem when she brings her fiance s staid parents home to meet her family. Their reaction and the conflict that follows produces a comical yet perhaps realistic view of life in the 1930 s. He was to become the baptizer, to bring many back to the Lord their God and to prepare for the Lord a perfect people. Mary visited Elizabeth who, when she heard the greeting of Mary, found that the babe in her womb leapt, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out with a loug voice, saying, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! And how have I deserved that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Elizabeth ' s time was fulfilled, and she brought forth a son who was named John. And the child grew and became strong in spirit and was called the Prophet of the Most High. He was to go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give to his people knowledge of salvation through forgiveness of their sins because of the loving-kindness of our God. Luke, Chap. 1, Verses 5-80. We take this occasion to honor our dearest daughter, Elizabeth Nolan, on the occasion of her graduation at Assumption College. May she also be El led with the Holy Spirit in all that she undertakes.
