. The 1984 Heights Assumption College Worcester, Massach usetts TABLE OF CONTENTS Student Life . Administration and Faculty Sports . Seniors . Convocation and the Mass of the Holy Spirit Convocation and the Mass of the Holy Spirit The Convocation and Mass of the Holy Spirit were held on September 8, 1983. Many of the Assumptionists as well as a great many faculty and adminstrative members took part in this traditional opening exercise of the academic year. It is a time for the student body to gather with others in the college community in spiritual celebration. ■■ic . . . And those are the memories that made me a wealthy soul. Oktoberfest Bash 1983 The day was sunny but not too warm - just perfect for OKTOBERFEST 1983. The festivities included a Moon Walk, dunking booth, and pumpkin decorating contest. The main event was, of course, the bands appearing in the tent. It was a treat for us to listen to the sounds of the Reflectors, NRBQ, Mitch Chakour, an d Beaver Brown. To top off the day, many enjoyed comparing the tastes of light and dark beer, and eating the munchies of our outdoor barbeque. Caught in the act . . . Halloween By the end of October, we were ready to let loose with style- and what style there was!! Everything from mimes to Charms lollipops and baseball players assembled in the cafeteria. If the Psych majors among us had stopped to analyze the costumes, perhaps they would have gained great insight into the personalities of many, but that night no one really cared- the crazier the better. It was a time to relax, have fun, and be a kid for just one more time! 10 But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible; logical; responsible, practical. 12 Parents ' Weekend PARENT’S WEEKEND 1983 was a two day event held on November 4 and 5. This event gave students a chance to be together with their parents for a weekend of dining, dancing, and fun. On Saturday, parents visited the campus, and later met faculty and administration members at an informal reception. President and Mrs. Hagan held receptions in their home both evenings prior to the dinner and dance. A hardworking committee under the direction of Student Coordinators Michelle Calvetto and Cheryl Ciuchta was responsible for the success of the weekend. 14 Junior - Senior Exclusive This year ' s JUNIOR SENIOR EXCLUSIVE was the second of its kind and enjoyed the same great success as its predecessor. This event gives the two classes the opportunity to relax with one another wearing something other than the usual attire. Bob Rivers of WAAF provided the entertainment. Hopefully, this favorite social event will continue in future years. Transitions. Spring jackets to winter coats and mittens. Fall to winter. First semester seniors to second semester seniors. Transitions. v ' Senior Happy Hour The SENIOR HAPPY HOUR was a chance for the senior class to exclusively enjoy the new” Pub in our Student Center. Many enjoyed drinking and passing the time with good friends. 18 Bong Show This year’s Bong Show was an entertaining extravaganza filled with a wide range of acts. There were dancers, singers, comedians and musicians not to mention the baton twirler. M.C.’s Leslie Daniel and Mark Kiley hosted the event in a series of strange costumes, each more outrageous than the last. Judges Phyllis Minsky, Bill Sutherland, and Donna (Dot) Wilcox provided the appropriate remarks as well as fair scores for the performers. Participants were from all four classes, a great chance for everyone to be together. Wmmk WmSm —I F A F A k ' My thoughts are trained for the future, my mind ' s on a higher goal, but in my heart there will always be this memory that stirs my soul.” Wi “Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind, Smiles we gave to one another, For the way we were . . So it’s the laughter, We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were ...” -Streisand ‘‘Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.” An Evening with Dinsdale ■ ■ - ' DINSDALE ' s act brought the Pub alive one Saturday night in March. The two very talented guitar players sang, danced, and joked with the AC crowd. Shots were offered to those best at trivia questions and also to those brave souls who got up and sang us some “oldies”. 24 Well, by March 3, 1984 it was really only 70 days until graduation which made it all the more fun for us! We danced all night long, and with the help of the Pub, we were treated to some great food and drink. DANCING WITH HENRY kept us on our toes as we got together with our friends and began the final countdown. . i AN UNTIMELY AD VENTURE On March 29, 1984 an uncharacteristic spring storm hit the northeastern seaboard of the U.S. Here at Assumption, we were glad to have a day off from classes but were also fearful that the Semi-Formal the next night would be cancelled. We were stuck for the day in our rooms and experienced cabin fever with our roomies. i % ' Lay your body down upon the midnight snow, Feel the cold of winter in your hair Here in a world of your own In a casing that ' s grown To a children ' s delight That arrived overnight. -Genesis AC ' s Campus Center Over the past two years, the As¬ sumption community gradually saw a dream become a reality. Last year on April 6, 1983 ground was broken on the land next to the gym. Construction began on the new Campus Center that summer. When students returned in the fall, they witnessed most of the process throughout the semester. On Feb¬ ruary 8, 1984 the center was dedi¬ cated to the benefit of all at AC. This project was a major accom¬ plishment and everyone was im¬ pressed with the new facility. It now houses a greatly expanded bookstore and campus store and a large multipurpose room. The Pub, Junction, SGA, mailroom, student lounge, and Dean of Students of¬ fice are all on the main floor. It also has a game room, wide screen t.v. and bank machine. It has become a meeting place for all and has helped to bring the community closer. The Class of 1984 is very glad to have use of the Campus Center for its last semester here and is very proud of Assumption ' s accomplishment. Semi-Formal March 30, 1984 . Rooms at the Marriott . . . Dresses bought . . . Outfits borrowed . . . Dates found . . . Cocktail parties . . . Dancing to Down East . . . Dancing in the aisl es . . . and just going wild and having fun!!! 34 Fire Destroys Darbois House On April 4, 1984 students in the 6-man townhouses were awakened at 3:20 a.m. and told to evacuate due to a fire in the Volunteer ' s and Fine Arts house. Most walked to the Campus Center, sleeping bags and pillows in tow, and stretched out in the lounge. The fire was not out until 5:00 a.m., leaving the building totally destroyed. Meanwhile, the rest of the campus slept peacefully because no sirens were used. A new location is not yet set. Spree Day SPRINGFEST was held on a rainy April weekend. But, we didn’t let the weather get us down. We just moved all the activities under the tent, such as our mid-morning barbeque. Decked out in our rain gear, we ate heartily the £ood SAGA provided, and the beer by Miller .... 38 April 14-15, 1984 . ... In the gym, we danced to the tunes of many different bands. Those that played were: DUKE ROBILLARD and the PLEASURE KINGS, JOHN CAFFERTY and the BEAVER BROWN BAND, BRUCE MARSHALL and the CLUE, and the STOMPERS. Neil Portnoy drew charicatures of many Assumption faces. Later that night ORLEANS played in the Pub, and even though spring had not yet sprung, AC partied on throughout the weekend. 39 Home Away From Home Our house, In the middle of the street Our house, Is our castle and our keep Our house, This is where we used to eat Our house, This is where we used to sleep Our house -Madness TH6: Bill, Lenny, lay, Bill, David, Peter, Steve 4G: Michelle, Marie, Cheryl, Robin 41: Craig, Mark Paul, Pat 42 5K: Mike, Scott, Mike, Joe, David 6P: Bill, Bob, Billy, Clayton, John, Lenny 51: Eileen, Karen, Annette, Maureen, Kathy A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the best of men . 5L: Jean, Elaine, Pam, Janice, Karin, Nancy, Laura 5D: Dave, David, Dan, John 6E: Joy, Debbie, Franceen, Lori, Maureen, Therese 44 4D: Kelly, Donna, Sue, Cathy C205: John C: Tracy ' time passes on, but the friends and memories are a part of you forever. 4H: Trisha, Debbie, Diane, Cathy TH10: Julie, Sue, Maria 5G: Monique, Donna, Chris, Kim, Sharon 5E: Jon, Jim, Ed, Jim, Shawn, Chris TH1 7 ; Betsy, Kathy, Eileen, Mary 5J: Caren, Mary Eleen, Liz, Darlene, Maria, Joyce. 45 1 M and the only time that seems too short is the time we get to play 6V: Tim, Wayne, Dan, Mark, Kevin, Mike, Bama C Dorm: Mike, Je££, Terry, Mary, Karen, Tracy, George, Mary Beth, Carol Sue, Maureen, Sue, Beth, Lizette, Cathy, Fred, Rob TH1: Jackie, Carol, Michelle, Debbie, Lauren, Ellen. Hagan President Hagan came to Assumption in 1978, bringing both fine administrative skills and a friendly manner to the community. Whether at a sporting event or in the Junction, his is a familiar, congenial face. President Hagan has been instrumental in many of the improvements on campus, the most notable being the Campus Center which opened in January of this year. President Hagan and his lovely wife Pat have made themselves accessible to the students and a very important part of the Assumption College community. ASSUMPTION COLLEGE 500 SALISBURY ST. WORCESTER, MASS. 01609 TELEPHONE (617) 752-5615 March 25, 1984 To the Class of 1984: It is a great pleasure for me to offer you my warmest congratulations on the occasion of your graduation from Assumption College. For the past eighty years, this College has educated thousands of men and women in the Catholic liberal arts tradition. Our graduates have distinguished themselves in the professions, business, and the arts. They have brought the light of learning acquired at Assumption to their many fields of endeavor, and the contributions which they have made and continue to make to society reflect credit on them¬ selves and their Alma Mater. I am confident that as the Class of 1984 joins their numbers, its members will also show themselves to be learned, moral, and caring individuals. You have received a great deal during these past four years, and you have a great deal to give others. You have the knowledge and tools required to accomplish great things. Be assured of our best wishes and prayers as you begin this exciting adventure. Very sincerely yours, t V- oseph H. Hagan [ President JHH vpm ' John E. True English Department The Faculty section is a very important part of our yearbook. Unfortunately, not all of them are pictured on these pages. Pictured or not, these people have played a major role in our lives. They were not merely educators, but role models, mentors, and friends. They have helped us to nurture that part of our souls which have allowed us to grow in many ways. When we arrived here four years ago they seemed a bit intimidating but as the years passed, we came to know and value their friendship and advice. Each day they faced us (and at times we weren ' t all that easy to face) with interest and enthusiasm which they passed onto us. Their accessibility and knowledge of their subject matter helped us formulate our plans for the future. At times we became confused and unsure of ourselves, but their direction helped us pass the confusion and self-doubt which clouded our view. As we graduate we find we have completed a four year battle and won. We wish to recognize all those who helped us in our achievements and although it seems inadequate to the task they had undertaken, we want to say THANK YOU. 57 Student Services W i Security: Richard Desplaines, Sue Engel, George Hacking Infirmary: Brother Robert Francis Beaulac, A.A. Over Thanksgiving break, two of our new classmates had been killed in an auto accident, and their deaths affected us as no other deaths possibly could have. They were like us, college kids on their first vacation from school. Cries of Why them? ' ' , They were so young. ' ' , and It just isn ' t fair. ' ' echoed throughout the campus. Fate had taught us a lesson in reality, and we struggled to understand that life really isn ' t fair. Whether we knew Rick and John, knew who they were, or didn ' t really know them at all- The Class of 1984 will always remember them. Richard O ' Brien President ' s Reception For Seniors In late April 1984, the senior class was cordially invited to President and Mrs. Hagan ' s home for an informal get-together. It was the first exclusively senior event with the President that marked our nearing completion at AC. Many attended and had an enjoyable evening. FRESHMAN YEAR September 1980 — May 1981 It was probably the year with the biggest impact on us all. For most of us, it was the first time in our lives that we were out on our own. An adventurous time to be away from home, decisions to be made alone, new people to meet, new things to learn. New horizons, a year of firsts. Changes. Harry Chapin played to our packed gym, the Business program was fairly new, and most of us were in awe of the upperclassmen. WACR was popular for dedications and Alumni 2 just loved to raid Desautel 3. (A restricted floor?) Weekend parties, and dances filled our social calendars. Our courses were new, professors pushed for hard work, and we tensely waited for our first CUM’s. ■ ■ % 1 2 ®8 . Warn, 118 SOPHOMORE September 1981 May 1982 We came back confident - a whole year of college behind us. We were the big guys on lower campus now. WACR folds, and the Pub’s new location became Founder’s basement. The new 6-men townhouses were built, and debates arose over building a Campus Center or library extension. AC presented J. Geils at E.M. Loew’s ( Centerfold”) and Jonathan Edwards helped us out on Spree Day to sit around and get a good buzz on.” We declared our majors by the year ' s end. Is it possible that we ' re already halfway through? JUNIOR YEAR September 1982 - May 1983 We are now hill and townhouse residents. Southside Johnny and Pousette Dart started our fall with a concert in the gym and we had a party . New ideas sprung up such as the Jr Sr Exclusive which was a huge success. The Roost (Junction) goes under renovation. The computer center is expanded and moved to the Relocatables. Plans for the Campus Center are finalized, and ground is broken in early April. Jane Fonda fever hits AC, and we become the incoming Senior Class .... September 1983 - May 1984 Resumes, job interviews, transcripts . . . Careers: the topic of many conversations. It is a year of planning. A year to go all out. Lots of partying, alot of thinking about all the good friends we ' ve made. A year of reflecting upon the changes we ' ve gone through. We ' ve grown together. Leaving will be hard. We make our last year the best one yet. Jim Plunkett plays to a packed Pub. The mailroom is moved to the gym ' s basement. The Campus Center is under construction - we have use of it for one semester. Transition year. Graduation approaches. 100 Daze (70 days really) - a wild party night. Spree Day: the rain didn ' t stop us. Townhouse life. The future is contemplated constantly, doubts creep in - Do we really want to leave? Life beyond the guardshack is what we ' ve been preparing for, but the time has flown too fast. Memories become very dear. We will treasure opr time here with our friends always. Hold on to your life here, It ' s been a valuable one. Our commencement from here marks the beginning of our success out there. by: Marie Savelloni Geraldine Barrett TIPS . . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . . Remember these? They were tips provided for us in our 1980 Freshman Record which served as our guide to this new world. Begin the semester with study because when it comes to an end you ' ll get lazy. Go to the first club meetings to find out what they are about. Remember you may irritate your roommate as much as they irritate you. Pick up Le Provocateur to find out what ' s happening around campus. Separate underwear and jeans and color clothing in the wash unless you enjoy discolored clothing. If you become ill, go to the Infirmary. Make your voice heard - VOTE in all campus elections. Get to know the administration and faculty better . . . They are here to help you and it can only make your stay her a little more enjoyable. mi ■ ■ 122 TIPS . . . TIPS. . . TIPS. . . TIPS TIPS. . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . And now our version of tips for life beyond the guardshack. Begin your life with enthusiasm because it will carry you over the rough times. Go to club meetings, find out what they are about, and get involved. Remember you may irritate co-workers, family, or roommates as much as they irritate you. Pick up and read the newspaper to find out what ' s happening around the world. Separate underwear and jeans and colored clothing in the wash unless you enjoy discolored clothing. (Just in case you forget). If you become ill, go to the doctor. Make your voice heard - VOTE in all local, state, and national elections. Get to know your co-workers, it can only make your job a little more enjoyable. TIPS . . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . . TIPS . . . 123 Metro Night . . . The kick-off event of the Class of 1984 ' s Senior Week was a night out at the Metro. We were the only ones in the Metro, one of Worcester ' s newest dance clubs. The combination of disco and rock music, as well as the videos provided something to appeal to everyone. Everyone had a great time, and the busy dance floor attested to that fact. I Booze Cruisin ' Boston Harbor May 9, 1984 By Wednesday, all of us were ready for a good time on the Cruise. Although it seemed we ' d never get there, (don ' t for the freguent bus stops) we arrived just in time to board the ship. Comprised of three levels, the class had a great time running from the top deck to the second level where a live band played and the third on which a DJ performed. The ride around the Harbor was calm but the boat was really rocking. On the way home while some slept and others sang, the general consensus was that the evening was well worth it. Thursday was a busy one as our week began to draw to a close. Faculty members joined us on the soccer field for food and drink. After a relaxing day in the sun, we moved to the Pub for Senior Superlatives . . . SENIOR SUPERLATIVES Senior Superlatives recognized various members of our class for their unique characteristics. They were given Thursday night - our last Pub night here at AC. V • Dr. Donald Letendre, Baccalaureate Address BACCALAUREATE May 11, 1984 President Hagan ' s Address The Baccalaureate Dinner and Dance was held on Friday night in the gym and catered by SAGA. Fr. Andre Dargis gave the blessing and after dinner, many spoke about AC and our past four years here. Mr. Robert E. Gray, Jr. spoke about the Alumni Association of which we were soon to become a part. Dr. Donald Letendre gave the Address in speaking of student life and his role on campus for the past twenty-five years. Many well- deserved service awards were given to members of our class. It was a night to share with our family and friends, and a chance for us to thank all those who have supported us along the way, especially our parents. Mr. Robert E.
