Through all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane. ’’ Jimmy Buffet It was somewhere in the end of August 1979. Most of us wanted one last chance at summer, but here we were - spending our Labor Day Weekend moving into college and into a four-year adventure. How the hell were we going to make it without our high school friends who had been so much a part of our lives for the last four years? How? Now, four years and four Labor Days later, we find ourselves completing the circle, and the wonder, though it assume s a new form, is still present. FRESHMAN YEAR: SEPTEMBER 1979 - MAY 1980 President Nixon’s tapes had just been made public. Were we really the children of Watergate? Chrysler Corporation went bankrupt and Three Mile Island became a household word. Pope John Paul II visited Boston and Ted Kennedy wanted to visit the White House. Fifty-two Americans were unwillingly going to visit Iran for the next year and a half. Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Senators involved in Abscam did not. Registration for the draft was reinstated by President Carter and our faith was reinstated by the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. We cried at “Kramer vs. Kramer” and the people in Miami cried at the race riots that threatened their existence. Most freshmen were tripled. Ray Boston played at orientation. Fr. Peter and Fr. Lamoureaux were freshmen, too. A fifty-dollar fine if you’re caught with alcohol! Pete Delaney replaced Pete McGrath as cafe manager. Chris P. O’Neil streaked and Beaver announced to the Quad that he was running for Our President. John Dean spoke to 500 in the fall and Rick Derringer sang to 500 in the spring. The Village Idiots won the Bong Show and Hayden- Deedy-Carver won the new SGA elections. “There are places I’ll remember all my life, though some have changed, some forever, not for better, some have gone, and some remain. ” John Lennon SOPHOMORE YEAR: SEPTEMBER 1980 • MAY 1981 Lech Walesa held his torch a little higher, as freedom and Solidarity shone on Poland. Ronald Reagan was elected President. President Reagan was shot. John Lennon tried, but someone else wouldn’t “give peace a chance.” Seven Irish prisoners ended a seven and a half week hunger strike. Pope John Paul II was shot by a Turkish terrorist. (Does Sophomore slump apply only to those in college?) The Rubik’s cube was introduced on the market and Laetrile was taken off. The roof on the Kansas City Hyatt Regency collapsed and the roof on despair was raised as we untied a yellow ribbon for the hostages after 444 days. Moshe Dayan and Bob Marley passed away but the Celtics won another title. “Harry, keep the change” - Harry Chapin (R.I.P.)- played the gym, so did John Hall on Spree Day. D.J. Sullivan was in the cafe, as was a new rug. Chief O’Donnell left, so did Steve Michaud. Enter George Hacking and Dr. Kline. Brother Robert celebrated his 25th anniversary in the religious order. 38 The guard shack was built and some senior guys took off to Florida in a Winnebago. John Robinson just plain took off. (A p.s. must also be given to Bernie Eschiavari.) “Someday we’ll look back on this, and it will all seem funny. ” Bruce Springsteen JUNIOR YEAR: SEPTEMBER 1981-MAY 1982 The baseball strike in the U.S. ended and so did Prince Charles’ bachelorhood in England. He and Lady Di made it official in July. (Something must be said of priorities). Hill Street Blues became a success, so did Space Shuttle Columbia. Goodbye, Henry Fonda, Anwar Sadat, and Natalie Wood. We’ll “Shout just a little bit softer now,” John Belushi. Britain fought Argentina for the Falklands and Los Angeles fought New York for the World Series (it’s all relative). The light of Solidarity was extinguished but not its spirit. No nukes and El Salvador are words that defy description. A World Airways plane skid into Boston Harbor and Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac River, killing 78 people. Enter Kelly-Rondeau-O’Toole. Exit WACR. If weekends were made for Michelob, then Thursdays were made for Busch on tap. The pub moved to Founders. We now have four, five, and six person townhouses, but no new library. J. Geils played at E.M. Loew’s and the Fools barely played at the M.C. Taylor Dining Hall. Noam Chomsky spoke at A.C. and Bob LoConte won the Hobey Baker Award for hockey. “Just Friends” at the Bong Show brought it closer to home and Clarence Clemons brought it to Spree Day. Jonathan Edwards substituted the tent for his shanty, but we “sat around and got a good buzz on.” 39 “We drank a toast to innocence, We drank a toast to time. We reached beyond our eloquence To another auld lang syne. ” Dan Fogelberg SENIOR YEAR: SEPTEMBER 1982 - MAY 1983 Lech Walesa was freed after 11 months and Lincoln Square was finished after two years. Leonid Brezhnev, John Cheever, and Grace Kelly passed away and Prince William and E.T. were born. M A S H ended 11 years about the Korean War and a memorial was dedicated to the vets of the Vietnam War. Holocaust survivors gathered in Washington to remind us of their struggle, and “Gandhi” won an Oscar for Best Film; we were reminded of his search for peace. Southside Johnny and Pousette Dart came to A.C.; Casey’s was enlarged and the pub opened six nights a week. Enter Breen-Pinsonneault-Wood. Exit kegs and Chris P. O’Neil. The “Exclusive” was a “Classic” and so was the 100 Daze Weekend with Jim Plunkett and the Blizzard of ’83. The Campus Center became more of a reality as the ground-breaking took place in April. “From the opium of custom, to the ledges of extreme, Don’t believe it till you’ve held it Life is seldom what it seems. Throw your heart upon the table, And in the shuffling of your dream, Remember who on earth you are. ” Emerson, Lake and Palmer Well, it is somewhere in the middle of May 1983. Most of us want a last chance at A.C. But here we are, some of us leaving and some of us finally arriving. Revelation, relationships, and reasonings have grown into our consciousness and that is what we take with us when we leave. We can’t frame it and it won’t get us a job, but the reflections mean just as much as the diploma. The calendar says we are ready to “commence.” Hold on to whatever it is that that means to you. The circle is complete. — Marua J. Murphy The Campus Center After years of planning and replanning, AC took one step closer in to the future. On April 6, 1983, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Campus Center. Targeted for completion in January of 1984, the Campus Center will be located in the wooded area between the Kennedy Science Building and Laska Gymnasium. The Center will be the home to new offices, the US Post Office, the campus and book stores, as well as lounges and conference rooms. Although the class of 1983 was not able to see the dream become a reality, their moral and spiritual support was an important asset to the Campus Center project. The Future 41 We’re children, needing other children Acting more like children than children. And yet letting our grown-up pride hide all the need inside 43 Lovers are very special people. They’re the luckiest people in the world. 44 No more hunger or thirst but first be a person who needs people . . . amum in i People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.” 45 Places we’ve been View of Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial Kathy Franolich Andrea Carlson at the Champs Ellyses in Paris Feeding the pigeons in Trafalger Square, London Ring of Kerry, Ireland 46 The top of Trinity College in Dublin Assumption students have a unique opportunity in the study abroad and internship programs. Members of the class of 1983 spent one or two semesters in places like Ireland, France, England, and Washington DC. They learned about new cultures, found new friends, and brought a small part of the AC spirit around the country and the world! Two of the more innovative ideas were the Junior-Senior Exclusive and The Dating Game. The Exclusive was held on November 20 and provided the two classes with an opportunity to get together in an atmosphere of taste and sophistication. The Dating Game, sponsored by the Junior Class on February 5, brought back the hit TV game show of the 1970’s. The Dating Game 59 « Old Ideas Easter Seals Party Each year, Communitas sponsors a Halloween party for children from the Worcester Easter Seals Society. This year’s party was held on campus on October 26, 1982. The kids all had a great time and the costumed student volunteers kept an Assumption tradition alive and well! 60 And The Same Old Thing! Cancelled classes, snow bans, sledding with Saga trays — welcome to winter! An inevitable part of going to school in New England is that white stuff that hits Worcester every year. Usually sane, sophisticated college students turn into wild “kids” building snow people, sledding and surviving snowball fights. And you always wondered why we came to college! 61 The Animals are back! 62 For quite some time, the zoo appeared closed. Quiet were the bleachers in Laska gymnasium; polite cheers met the basketball team as it drove to victory. But this year was different. The Animal Section came back! Wilder and louder than ever, they cheered their Greyhounds to victory. Welcome back — you were sorely missed! 63 64 The Year In Pictures 1982 - 1983 iwim— nil—Utiiii wiiwmnia 66 Chapel of The Holy Spirit September 8, 1982 67 FALL SPORTS 1st row: J. Faroni, S.
