HAGAN as Fourteenth President of Assumption College “ . . .1 am often asked if I truly believe that small, Catholic liberal arts colleges like Assumption can survive into the next century. Of course I do. And I believe it precisely because I am convinced that their survival is necessary if our entire American system of higher education is to remain strong and healthy ...” 4 ■ • “ . . . But in order to achieve their survival, such schools must remain true to the purpose of their founders, be prudent in the management of their re¬ sources and be vigorous in seek¬ ing support from all who believe in the value of pluralistic educa¬ tion in a free society ...” 5 . . Here at Assumption we have a big job ahead of us. But we face the future with faith and confidence. As the new leader of this academic community, I ask that you join me in this great adventure. Give me your hand, and together we shall go forward to meet tomorrow with a prayer on our lips and a song in our hearts.’’ 6 . . . The heart of any college is its faculty. I have said on a number of occa¬ sions that one of the principal reasons I accepted the Presidency of Assumption was the high regard I have always had for the reputation of this faculty. Their schol¬ arship, excellence in teaching, and sincere interest in students are exemplary . . .” 9 . . Just as the heart of the college is our faculty, so is the soul of this school the Assumptionist Fathers and Brothers. They are the guarantors of the character of this institution, and I cherish them for what they are and what they represent . . 10 . . .
