_ THE HEIGHTS 1971 ASSUMPTION COLLEGE Worcester Massachusetts To many just a coach, but to us a man possessing rare charismatic qualities. We, not only as teams but also as individuals, were instilled with the pride, desire, and charity that he always manifested. With deepest appreciation and constant admiration, we the class of 1971 dedicate our yearbook to MR. JOSEPH O ' BRIEN. Those who educate children well are more to be honored than even their parents, for these only give them life, those the art of living well. — Aristotle — THE MEN OF THE YEAR 1971 We are not the only men to whom the year 1971 belongs. Many have undergone the four-year experiences termed the college career . But we shall never know them as we have come to know ourselves through each other. This is why the year is special to us. We come together in a time when the binds of adolescences were becoming strained, And in a restless effort to break them. We also sought out their inner confines and found manhood to be made. Thus began the first stage When we prepared to stand our ground. Each one is a guarded cover of isolation and fear. Ready and willing to join hands with each other. By the second stage however. We found ourselves Confounded in a common purpose; That to be self-fulfillment and recognition of our individual potentials; Identifying with each other in this way Was essential at this time. As it helped in dissolving the fear barriers And establishing far-reaching islands. The new stage confronted us with new and different conflicts. Words like escalation and war Seemed to be turning the world into a state of bitter anxiety; A time of decision on the part of all Americans, as well as ourselves. We felt life come upon us Like those experiencing the hard reality of a bomb falling in a far-off country. We were troubled, but determined, to let nothing prohibit each his individual growth. Our oppression was relieved somewhat by this determination; And also by the appearance of the male counterpart on campus; now life on the hill . As time passed. It seemed many times that the world existed on borrowed time. Won by the patriots of long ago. But fall came again, and brought on the fourth stage. With them returned many of the same conflicts, unresolved decisions and future plans. More important however, we have found truth and value in our own lives; And together we ' ve worked long and hard to reach this discovery. As a result, we have learned that with self-determination and willingness to accept one ' s capacities and limitations. The truth of oneself in time will dawn at the front porch of understanding. Then, the early morning fog disappears and day begins. For this reason. The Year 1971 is special to us. We have reached the dawning of a new age, TOGETHER. Is This The Dawning of The Age of Aquarius For Assumption? At its earliest beginnings Assumption College was analogous to a village with its priests. Then it grew into a town — a one industry town — with its intellectual and spiritual oligarchy. Now it is like a city of infinite interests, activities and problems. Today, we are being made more and more pain¬ fully aware of the crisis in our cities. So too, there is a crisis at Assumption. Will it learn to channel and control its diversities and conflicts or will it finally collapse from lack of an all encompassing and inclusive central structure based on the strength of its ideals? To attempt to answer the question might destroy or obscure the why and how we came to this point of uncertainty. With this thought in mind, I would like to focus the remainder of this article on one segment of this community of infinite variety — the STUDENTS. Today ' s student population presents some real challenges to a college trying to accommodate their wide range of interests and needs. It would appear that more students are pushed into our colleges by parental pressures, the growing necessity to present degrees, the draft, peer pressure or sheer apathy, than by intellectual curiosity. What do you get when you put such a heterogeneous grouping into a church affiliated institution that is striving to prepare men and women for life? As the Dean for Students, I have seen how quickly the student becomes disheartened and disenchanted. I have seen the speed with which learning in the classroom and learning out of the classroom become two separate worlds, each one hermetically sealed off from the other. The need for higher education to keep pace with the changing realities of the here and now is obvious. So is the fact that it is not doing this. The feeling that something must be done is almost overpowering here at Assumption. However, the question of exactly what it is we must do seems to be receiving little consideration. For me, the fundamental task for Assumption is to let the sunshine in again - to help, or forc e us all to become more responsive to the varied needs of students. We need to open up the system so that its most repressive and destructive characteristics are mitigated, if not eliminated. Further, we must remember that students, too, are human beings who deserve to be treated with as much dignity and respect as other humans. We must keep clearly in mind that our objective is the development of students, not the preservation of the institution. Yes, it would be a shame if Assumption had to close, but the real catastrophe would be the prospect of total moroniza- tion, dehumanization and the manipulation of the individual. It seems that deciding to save the world is much easier than deciding where to start the job. The Age of Aquarius lacks imaginative projec¬ tion: the capacity to channel the ideals of the world-savers to meet the needs of the individual. This is why we must find more permanent ways of preserving the stature of the individual and accept the challenge of this new role. The role will require us to teach students not what to learn, but how to learn and not solely what they would be committed to, but the value of commitment. The problems, tensions and diversities of life in today ' s cities are focusing the architects and residents to re-examine what they are doing. So too, it is time for us in higher education to stop tailoring the students to the system and to begin tailoring the system to the individual. Particularly as a church related institution. Assumption must not leave the consideration of the individual behind on the road to the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, for we may sadly find that in attaining the Utopian Dream, we have destroyed our capa¬ city to dream any further. — Richard Wotruba Dean of Students In the warm and sentimental context of a college yearbook, it is a bit difficult to recall to mind the uncertainties that have challenged higher education since the Class of 1971 was launched four years ago. Hopefully, we, as a nation and a people, have learned and gained and are now well on the way to rediscovering the nature, the goals, and the imperatives of the American col¬ lege experience. The College was created by the American colonists, who were unprepared to establish genuine universities in the European tradition. It remains to this day a uniquely American institution. In the early days, American college Students were very young — boys went to Harvard or Yale or Pennsylvania at the age of twelve or thirteen — and they came, for the most part, from simple, unsophisticated homes. Colleges felt obliged, therefore, to assume a parental role in their regard and to lay out most carefully for them a plan of formal courses. When, in the 1860 ' s Americans created their first universities, these were established as a con¬ tinuation of the College, rather than a substitute for it. They were adapted to collegiate, rather than university, standards. Furthermore, since the United States, unlike most European coun¬ tries, did not have academies and other learned institutions to carry out the work of science or research, whatever society or government wanted done along these lines was entrusted to the University. This practice eventually led to the Multiversity, that is, the University that no longer confined itself to the traditional functions of professional training and research, but took upon itself a host of miscellaneous activities, academic and otherwise. Standards for higher education continued to be set by the Ivy League institutions of the East and by such state universities as Wisconsin, Michigan, and California. It was a struggle to main¬ tain these standards. There were just not enough qualified students or professors to go around. Then, almost overnight, with the great surge of enrollments produced by the G.l. bills at the close of World War II, the drive for excellence was on. Today the goal of excellence in American higher education has come under furious attack. A growing wave of anti-intellectualists deny that truth, and the pursuit of truth, should be essential preoccupation of higher education. The concern should be, they claim, not with basic research but, rather, with coping with life. The emphasis should be upon utility and experience. Many stu¬ dents today are not lifted or excited by scholarly pursuits. They demand that their education be relevant, both in content and in form, to their own experience and needs in life and that it be geared to help them to adapt to society, today and in the future. The American College was intended to teach character, as well as train the mind. It was meant to incalcate all the accepted values of American life. It was part of the Establishment, which was itself looked upon as sound, just, and enlightened. Most of today ' s students, however, are too sophisticated to accept the in loco parentis role of the traditional Colleges; and, far from looking upon the Establishment as enlightened, they repudiate it wholeheartedly. Today ' s password is change. We are giddy from the increased pace of technological innovation and its many repercussions; but more significant yet are the changes that have taken place in our values and mores. No longer do we live in an apparently stable, controlled society, following pre- established and universally accepted rules and norms. No longer are the traditions and principles cherished down through the years held in reverence, or even readily accepted. We live today in a society in flux, determined largely by external circumstance, a society in which being has given way to becoming. Adjustment to change is the constant which underlies ail of today ' s problems - problems with which our colleges are necessarily concerned. We cannot insulate ourselves from society, nor should we want to do so. However, colleges should be vitally concerned, also, with tomorrow ' s problems and with educating students to solve them with intelligence. Our society is faced today with urgent cries and awesome challenges. These questions will be with us for some time to come. There are no easy answers. Let us distinguish, however, between training for citizenship and training for scholarship. Acti¬ vism and commitment to public issues can be an escape from the disciplines and boredom of serious study. The point to bear in mind is that American higher education is available to every¬ one and not just to the intellectually elite; and most American students are not intellectuals. Pre¬ paration for a life of accelerating change requires changing methods of education, true; but the waiving of academic requirements and lowering our standards of excellence in order to make higher education accessible to more of those who are not really prepared for it? Higher educa¬ tion should not be equated with longer education — that is, education beyond high school — or even with broader, or continuing education. Perhaps in our rediscovery of the nature, and the imperatives of a college education, we would do well to reflect upon the development of this American institution in the pursuit of excellence? Can we afford to ignore the rich store of wisdom past generations have left us; the treasure of worldly experience accumulated by keen and observing minds, aided in their observations by the greater simplicity and leisure of life around them? It is such minds who have taught us to specu¬ late and inquire boldly, to fell and enjoy deeply, and to create and communicate effectively. While there ought to be attractive alternatives to college, such as stronger and more diversified community college programs, it is essential that the private liberal arts college, with its commit¬ ment to civilization, remain an important part of our educational system. Lola E. Boyd Dean of Coordinate College The Dawning of a New Age The dawn is a very mysterious, awe-inspiring time, measured as it is by a night that is no more and a day that is not yet. Likewise is the new age in whose early hours we now find ourselves. Clearly, it is a diff erent age from times we can clock in terms of Classical, Medieval, and even Modern periods. Undoubtedly, it is this phenomenal degree of difference that makes us feel that our age is so new, an age when so much of the dynamic of life is bursting the once-honored forms of man ' s life in the Spirit. And yet one must ask, if ask he will, whether all that is now is really so radically new? What is the present unless it is the culmination of a selftransforming past? Our failure to perceive reality from such a vantage point cuts us off from history, from the insights and contri¬ butions of previous wise men to whom their day was also very new. Thus ostracized, we do not feel at home we become strangers to the humanity in which we of necessity participate. In the dawning of this new age stands Assumption College, committed to the enlightenment of individuals through participation in the achievements of the past, the realities of the present, the hopes of the future. Only as individuals, through self and world knowledge, transcend the present can they live in a new age without being squeezed into its mold. Only then can one gain a per¬ spective enabling them to engage in the ongoing struggle and adventure to make certain that the new approximates the good. To this task Assumption dedicates all its energies and re¬ sources. Oscar E. Remick February 21, 1971 Age has connotations of geological periods and I believe most students envisage something of shorter duration. For the purposes of this note , I think age means a decade. Instead of being the beginning of the 70 ' s, 1970 was the end of the 60 ' s. As it unfolded — and there is every indication that the first half of 1971 if following the same pattern — the shape of the 70 ' s became clearer and the differences with the 60 ' s became more apparent. The more one thinks about it, the more it seems true to say that, as far as higher education is concerned, the 60 ' s really began late in 1957, when the Soviets launched their Sputnik. The shock which went through the American people when they realized that America ' s position as unquestionable intel¬ lectual and technological leader of the world had been successfully challenged, led to concern over our educatjonal system, its programs and funding. The Federal Government launched a top priority campaign to recover its leadership and as the years went by there gradually developed in the educational establishment a number of assumptions and expectations which undergirded higher education until 1968-69. When the Nixon administration came to Washington, the full significance of this event was misread by many. It might be fairer to say that the Nixon administration if 1968 did not have as clear a conception of the priorities it would adopt in 1970 as is now evident. During 1970 these priorities became painfully clear and they added up to a downgrading of the claim of higher edu¬ cation upon the resources of the country. The substitution of interest subsidy for direct borrowing from the government for educational facilities seemed at first to be only an attempt to channel some of this financial business back into the private share and to take a few halting steps toward limiting big government — two planks in the Republican platform of 1968. As a matter of fact, however, this was a first indication of the new order of priorities which would place increased welfare, pollution control, crime deterrance and urban renewal above education. Under the priorities which prevailed in the 60 ' s, the educational establishment came to believe: (1) that the dual (public-private) higher educational system constituted a fundamental value in our pluralistic society; (2) that the relative proportion of the student population being served by the private and public sectors would be maintained; (3) that if the private sector proved it could continue to service its share of a rapidly ex¬ panding student population — which will reach its peak about 1980 — there would be some kind of government bail out from the indebtedness into which the private sector had gone to help educate our people; and finally (4) that the growth of the government grant and loan programs for living accommodations, student unions, athletic facilities, libraries, laboratories, classroom and office buildings was proof that these beliefs were well founded. In the late 60 ' s there slowly developed an uneasy feeling that some or all of these beliefs were not shared by the new Republican administration with the same whole-heartedness that the pre¬ vious administration had shown. From 1957 to 1968 a momentum had built up, based on these beliefs. To shift gears would not be easy. How does one go from a state of mind consisting of inflation, expansion and trust in an eventual bail-out, to a frame of mind which must have as its key components: (1) that the share of the burden of higher education which the private sector will have to bear will be smaller than in the past, while the public sector will have to absorb the major part of the growth in the college-age population; (2) that indebtedness will have to be amortized from the oper¬ ational proceeds of each educational institution; and (3) that any further capital additions will have to be financed in the same way. For those who may be familiar with the stock market, the ques¬ tion is one of going from a decade and more of bull attitude to a period of bear mentality. A bull market is one which is ex¬ pected to go even higher, hence the need to plan for bigger, more diversified operations. Hence, also, the need to decentralize to encourage initiative in growth opportunities. In this kind of at¬ mosphere, one can tolerate unused facilities and personnel on the grounds that tomorrow ' s growth will make them necessary. A deficit today will be made up out of tomorrow ' s profits. Trans¬ lated into educational terms, a bull market is the time of prolifer¬ ation of programs, hurried additions to plant, and headlong hiring of staff to stay abreast of the growth in the student population without endangering the quality of the educational effort nor the style of campus life. It is a time of optimism, when the pot at the end of the rainbow is one ' s fingertips. A bear market, on the other hand, is a time when tomorrow will be more difficult than today. It is a time for belt tightening in order to ride out what will hopefully be a short period of dwindling resources. Everything which is not essential to survival must be jettisoned. It is a time of more work for less pay — to stretch out the available funds until the upturn comes. In educa¬ tional terms, a bear market is a time of consolidation of programs, a time when quality is sought intensely since there can be no additional quantity. As far as students are concerned, a bear period is one when they can expect the educational institutions to provide them with the best education opportunities since the total effort must be towards quality — there being no means of pursuing quantitative growth. Some of the frills will disappear from the campus, but the essentials of quality education will be all the more evident. This is how the new decade (age?) seems to be dawning — at least from the president ' s desk. George Bissonnette, A.A. LAWRENCE G. FLAMAN JR. Psychology MICHAEL P. Various injuries and an ina¬ bility to work as a cohesive unit got the team off to a bad start. However, the team was exciting and showed great potential while playing before large crowds of Assumption supporters. The 1971 season is hoped to be the season when the potential of Assumption soccer is realized. Incoming freshmen have an excel¬ lent chance of winning one of the five posi¬ tions left via graduation. A runner must first of all be an individual, and secondly he must be willing to impose demands upon himself. It has often been said of cross country that it is a lonely sport, and indeed it is. Anyone who participates in this sport comes to realize the meaning of lonely as he makes his way over the four to five mile courses. Cross country is not merely a sport, it is an experience and part of a way of life. As with most things, it is only as good as you make it - and we hope to make it good. Hockey is still in it ' s formative years at Assumption. It has progressed in the past few years from competing in a Worcester area league into the New England scene. A vigorous physical conditioning program starts long before the season begins. Assumption is facing one of the toughest schedules in New England this year for a college team. Under the Leadership Coach Charles Lanzella the team has developed with many freshman and is building for the future. The crew team starts work early before all the ice has disappeared from Lake Quinsamond. It is a short season in which many thankless hours are spent in indoor rowing machines. The team has expanded it ' s program to include two regattas at the end of the season in which the team did excep¬ tionally well against very strong fields. 1971 SCHEDULE AND RECORD 1-3 L Amherst College L University of Rhode Island L Stonybrook College W C. The Assumption College golf team has just completed a remarkable rebuilding season with a fine 7-6 record. Even more remarkable was the fact that the team played all but the final three matches without the services of its captain, Jud Kelley, who was bed ridden with Hepititis. The team fin¬ ished strongly by winning five out of its last six matches. Along with a strong showing in the New England ' s made it a very rewarding year for the players and coach Andy Laska. 1971 SCHEDULE AND RECORD 7-6 L Providence College 2-5 L St. Anselm ' s College 2-5 L Lowell Tech 1-6 W Lowell State 572-1 1 2 W Clark University 6-1 L Colby College 3-4 L Holy Cross College 0-7 W Worcester Tech 5-2 W Suffolk University 4-3 L Babson College 2-5 W New Haven College 4-3 W Nichols College 472-2 72 w Brandeis University 4-3 First Row: T.
