Page 9 MOST REVEREND JOHN C. CODY, D.D. Bishop of London Page 10 DEAR GRADUATES, For you life’s battle has reached a decisive stage. The prince of darkness frantically displays the tinsel of earthly bait to entice you into the broad, smooth, easy way of the pleasure-seeker. Christ majestically beckons to you to follow Him on the straight and narrow path of duty. This is the parting of the ways. You must choose who is to be your guide. Shall yours be the Gospel of self-indulgence or the Gospel of self-sacrifice? Since peace is the tranquility of order’’ satan has none to offer you. Christ offers you abiding peace but paradoxically only at the price of violence: The kingdom of heaven suffercth violence and the violent bear it away . He bids you do violence not to others but to yourselves: to your wicked passions, to your evil inclinations, to your inborn selfishness. May the Queen of the Assumption help you make the right choice and cling to it with true devotion for then you will find Her Son’s yoke “sweet and light to bear . JOHN C. CODY, Bishop of London. ' VERY REV. E. C. LEBEL, C.S.B. M.A. President, Assumption College. After commenting on many outstanding virtues ifi the makeup of modern youth, a wise man detected a flaw frequently found in the men of tomorrow. “Our youth lack gratitude”, he said. Whether such a general remark he true or false, it is worthwhile pondering. Does such a statement describe your attitude to God, to your parents, to your Church, to your city, to your country, to your friends, to your school? If you fail to see why you should thank God for the abundant blessings you have received from Him and from what your elders have given you, there is something wrong with your education. I prefer to think that youth of today are so excited in imagining the glorious future that awaits them, that they do not think to show gratitude for the past. If they were confronted with the question: “Are you grateful?” I am sure ninety-nine percent of them could honestly answer, “Yes, of course I am grateful, but look what there is yet to be done.” So I would urge you to pursue steadily in the future what you envision for the world’s improvement; you will one day look back with the wise man and be grateful for the past. Your education then will be much more complete. God bless you! Page 14 REV. F. A. BROWN, C.S.B., M.A. Principal Message to the Graduates We hope your years at Assumption High School will always be recalled with pleasure. The associations you have formed here, the friends you have formed here, the friends you have made, should be an inspiration to you throughout the rest of your life. Those friends will always be interested in knowing the degree of success to which you attain in your chosen life work. But remember true success is not to be judged by wordly norms, but by the standards set down by the Master. If you can honestly and sincerely say at each period of your life that you have faithfully lived up to the code of mortality that was taught you at Assumption, then your friends will know that you are a success. And most important of all, God will know that you have been a faithful servant. May you always be proud of Assumption, and may Assumption always be proud of you. Page 15 FR. Page 27 RONALD CARR During the school year of 1952-53 Assumption College lost one of its beloved students, Ronald Carr. Ronnie was a very conscientious worker and was never lacking in that spirit of co-operation which is so necessary among the students in a school. For these qualities he has certainly won the esteem of both the staff and his fellow students. Ronnie was devoted to his mother—and with this, I would describe his home life. Many hours spent with Ronnie and his mother left me with indelible memories of this boy’s love for his mother. I started school at Assumption with Ronnie in 1949 and remained in the same class with him until his death in 1952. In our associations I always found him to be a very self-sacrificing, clean living boy,—a boy with all the characteristics of a good Catholic youth. I have never thought of Ronnie’s death as a tragedy. True, he is with us no longer, but that is not a tragedy for Ronnie—for I know that his Creator has called him to his eternal reward. Bill Fox. Page 28 fv O R I A M LEO GASPARET Leo Gasparet was a student of 10 E during the school year 1950-51. He had been at Assumption for over a year and a half before he became ill. After a few short absences from school he finally became bed-ridden and could not finish his year. His illness gradually became worse and was the cause of his death on December the fourth, 1952. Leo was an A-student as well as an active sportsman. He played house league football in his freshman year and had a keen interest in many sports. Nor were his interests devoted exclusively to sports, for he studied piano for three years and was in training for a post on the Reporter staff. Leo came to Assumption after attending St. Angela, Immaculate Concep¬ tion, and De La Salle schools. He was a member of the church of St. Angela Merici and his ambition was to become a priest. He had many close friends at Assumption who miss him very much. May his soul rest in peace. Jim Kennedy. Page 29 i Page 30 Senior Varsity Front Row: J. Aluia, E. Raedle, G. Kiser, D. Tracey. F. F 0 0 T 6 A L L The High School Raiders of 1952 proved to be one of the best teams that Assumption has ever had. Under the superb coaching of Fathers Armstrong, Cullen, and Lewis, the boys played as a team anil won as a team. This year’s squad, led by co-captains, Bob Kefgen and Ed Raedle, credited themselves with four wins, two loses, and one tie, including all exhibition and play-off games. The boys were up-an-going from the opening whistle and this accounts for the fine record shown below. The Patterson Panthers were privileged to give them their defeat of the season. The Raiders ended up in a tie for second place with the Kennedy Clippers, but lost out in the semi-finals. However, the lads in purple never lost their morale in any game, whether they were winning or losing. In every game a well conditioned and spirited team could be observed from the stands. At the end of the season, Fr. Arm¬ strong was thoroughly convinced that expert coaching always pays off. I V A R S I T Y This year our Junior Raiders showed all the outstanding spirit and drive typical of an Assumption team. Although playing only exhibition games the team, mostly frosh and sophomores, picked up much needed experience and learned cooperation and good sportsmanship, the foremost qualities of a championship team. Under the superb mastery of Fr. J. Higgins, assisted by Messrs. Mark Wyatt and Larry Connerton, the boys played as a team and won as a team. The squad, led on the field by co-captains Jack LeBlanc and Norm Rice, credited themselves with three wins and one loss during the season ' s play. The boys looked sharp at the beginning of the season and proved that they would be hard to beat because they left the opponents scoreless in their first two games. The only defeat, a game played against an older and more experienced senior team was nothing to be ashamed of because the boys took everything thrown at them and fought back with terrific zest, only to lose by a small margin. However the lads in purple didn’t lose their morale and in the next and last game we saw a well conditioned and spirited twelve as they walked over the opposition in a one-sided contest which was their highest scoring game. Fr. Higgins was now convinced that all his drilling had not been in vain. Strong on offence, rough on defense, the 1952 reserves were a powerful and determined team and should bring much brilliance and dash to the varsity team in future years. FR. HIGGINS C.S.B. Scoring 129 points in eight games, being scored on but twice to the total of ten points, and undefeated in all games, the 1952 Spartans rolled on to an impressive victory. The hard hitting by such linesmen as Levack and Maesonville, the pass catching of Theriault and Parisotto, l the later caught twelve passes in one game), and the cool headed quartering of Bill Bloink combined with the line plunges of Parent, the off tackle runs of Antaya, and round the end running and passing of Scobio and the reverses of Paniccia and Kosi to present no weak¬ nesses to the opposition. We need a first down”, Bloink was often heard asking, “Let Antaya take it off-tackle”. Congratulations to the Texans for the most improved team of the season. Named from the opening game as the team to beat”, the Stampeders proved themselves just that. They finished out the regular season with a 45-11 victory over Georgetown to clinch the top spot in the standings. This was done through the brilliant passing combination of Paterson to McPhalin, the later scoring three touchdowns in the game. The varsity quaterback of 1954, Pater¬ son utilized the running ability of his other backfield men, Blanchard. Giroux, and Paron. In the playoffs the line played a very important part as the scores indicate. They were led by the small but most effective J. Gagda and A. Soulliere. After winning one and trying two suc¬ cessive games in the playoffs, the Stampeders were losing 3-0 at halftime in the fourth game. They received the ball on their own fifteen yard line to open the third period. After a sustained drive, to the fifteen yard line, using clever running plays, Capt. Ralph Paterson made a wide run around his unbalanced line to the right and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown. He also added the extra point and the scoring was over with the Stampeders the Champions of the Bantam House League. They were a team faithful to practice with a will to win and a trust in prayer. They listened attentively always to Mr. Jordon who tried and succeeded in making the Stampeders the best in the league. Standings: Team W. L. T. Pts. Hockey I lie 1953 City High School hockey champions may not have been the greatest team in Assumption s hockey history, but no team ever used size, ability, and strength to greater advan¬ tages The Purple pucksters were pegged at the season ' s start as inexperienced kids who might make the playoffs. Composed mostly of second and third formers, and a few older lads, the Raiders sur¬ prised the experts by winning consistently until beaten by Lowe Vocational for the first time in three years As the season progressed the youngest team in the league improved and the critics oegan to take note of Assumption ' s kids. The Raiders ended the season in second place with a seven won two tied, and one lost record. W ' alkerville was astounded by the Raiders’ 13-1 win in the semi¬ finals. In the WSSA finals, the Raiders upset a highly-favored Vocational sextet 4-1 and 4-3, to win their third successive City Crown. In the first game of the Western Ontario finals, the Raiders fought to a 2-0 win over a much older and more experienced London Beal Tech team. In London, the Raiders lost their second game of this year and the WOSSA title to Beal 5-1. The Raiders of this year boasted of the strongest defence in the city with Bill Evon and Tom Paterson protecting goalie Pete Fillman. These players could not have been successful had it not been lor the expert positional play of Ed Carriveau, John Lemay and A1 Gatti, and the smooth passing of Larry Markle, Dino Paniccia and Italo Cusinato. The successful season was due more to the coordinated efforts of the team as a whole, than to the work of individual stars. Real teams reach the top only after toil, disappointments, self-sacrifice, and prayer. These four qualities made this year’s City Champs great. No team worked harder than they to win; none took defeat more bitterly; all players made great sacrifices for the good of the team; each game was begun with and ended with a prayer to Our Ladv of the Assumption. We hope the teams of the future can mutate in some little way the Champs of 1953. ADVANCED BUSINESS EDUCATION TRAIN IN THE SCHOOL THAT WILL DO THE MOST FOR YOU WINDSOR BUSINESS COLLEGE R. J. The high flying Haiders went through the regular season undefeated having a record of 14-0. After beating Kennedy in the semi-finals, the purple quintet went on to win the W.S.S.A. city championship. They went to London to play in the W.O.S.S.A. tournament and won their first two games easily, qualifying themselves for the final game against the Walkerville Tartans. The Tartans managed to hand the Raiders their first regular season setback, 35-32. The game was widely Walkerville’s during the first half but in the third and fourth quarters an en¬ tirely different Raider team was seen in ac¬ tion. However, the late comeback was not able to overtake the Tartan lead. Throughout the season the Raiders scored 977 points while the opponent got 895. Bertoia makes it look Action against Patterson The team had the same deficit this year as last and that was lack of height, a deficit which is hard to overcome in basketball. However the Raiders made an incredible showing in every other department. Their defensive patterns provided the fans with many thrills. In these defensive efforts, Jack Hool and Ed Raedle were the key men. Both of them stopped many offensive plays of the opponent. On the offensive side of the pic¬ ture Zalba and Hool are prominent. Both Zalba and Hool had better than 12 point averages per game. The two high scorers were both voted to the first team on the all¬ city squad. Ed Raedle made the second team. It is hoped that teams in the future at Assumption will live up to the mark set by the Purple Raiders of 1953. Left to Right— J. Hydom, D. Wood, M. Calahan, A. Pelzer. On prairie sweep and in isolated wttaemcss, cage, hands are uncovering proven fields of oil, iron, titanium, uranium. In the west, a new chemical industry is booming, and in every province, each month brings forth fresh evidence of nature ' s bounty. Small wonder businessmen the world over refer to Canada as the land of opportunity. But great natural riches provide only the foundation for a prosperous future. Prosperity must be built—and that takes men and women, hundreds of thousands of them, to contribute their talents, skill and zeal. These people will share in Canada ' s destiny . . . with profit to the nation and themselves. Take careful measure of the outlook for Canada when planning your own career.
