TO MARY OUR DEAREST MOTHER IN HONOR OF HER GLORIOUS ASSUMPTION WE LOVINGLY DEDICATE THIS VOLUME u HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND JOHN C. CODY, D.D. Bishop of London Graduates of this Holy Year, you will find yourselves in your own history and in humanity’s history. Strive to meet with courage and gen¬ erosity your duties as lay apostles of Christ. So long as you continue to frequent the sacred school of the Eucharist, nothing need dismay you, for in the vibrant words of Pius XII: It is from this celestial Banquet, from this most real union with God. that sanctity must draw its main strength. From this union and this sanctity the family, social, and international ties, must derive vigor, so that in the end the precious gift of peace may flourish through sanctity and unity. Willingly do I bless you and the devoted teachers who have given of their best to fit you for a glorious career here and hereafter. Cordially yours in Christ, Bishop of London REV. JOHN H. O’LOANE, C.S.B., M.A. President, Assumption College DEAR GRADUATES— W ho else in the world carries so heavy a harden of rare and anxiety as out Holy father, Pope Pins XII? Yet, not long ago Pope Pius congratulated present- day youth on the privilege it enjoys of living in an age when, over the whole world, tremendous changes are taking place and human society is pci haps being shaped in a new mold , So, Graduates of Fifty-One, when the moans of pessimists assail your ears, pay no attention to them. Rather, use the precious gifts of optimism and enthusi¬ asm that properly belong to youth; make your own the glorious courage of Pius XII, who looks beyond the real dangers of the present to the equally teal benefits (hot can be gained by a generation that uses its own strength and humbly asks the help of God. 13 • • • 4 —■ SENIORS: As graduates o the class of 1951, you are going out into a world that is sadly in need of good Christian leaders. Your education during the period of high school training has been based upon Christian prin¬ ciples of living. If your school days are to continue, we sincerely hope that you will seek an institution of higher learning that will continue to instill those Christian principles into your lives. If. for any reason, your formal education is now at an end. we urge you to cling fast to the moral code that has been outlined for you xvhile you attended Assumption. Only by loyally to that code will you be an asset to society, and a credit to yourself and your school. God bless you . 14 I SEATED: Fr. D. Mulvihill, Fr. E. Pappcrt, Fr. E. Hartmann STANDING: Fr. J. In fact we had to be satisfied w.th one win and a tie. But it was OUR team out there S £ game and we were as proud of it as of any of its predecessor,. It was a hght team, an inexperienced team, and although it possessed a true feta the characteristic Assumption will-to-win. it couldn t quite make t ' ofLh speed, weight, and experience. Early season injuries deprived the team of such veteran big-guns as Red Miller. Bill Lucier, Don Turner, and Frank Dupont. Despite an unimpressive record in the “win column the team produeed.ts share stellar performers. Ron Rochon was the unanimous cho.ce for the All city ful l slot while Bill Begin and Bob Burman missed similar honors by a single vote. Before Bill Lucier was sidelined by injuries his performance was more than sufficient capture the Most- improved player Award. .... , , , i „ With next seasons co-captains Ron Rochon and Tom Winkle at helm an promising quota of seasoned material on the roster we look forward to greater achievement in 1951. The Junior Raiders, last year’s WOSSA champions, relinquished their hold on the coveted trophy this season, hut only after a bitter fight to retain it After sweeping through their five-game local schedule undefeated-in fact their goal-line was trespassed hut once-they journeyed forth as the city champs in search of more remote scalps. The first sally abroad met with success when they grabbed the semi-final tilt from a strong St. Thomas squad. Glad to settle for the skimpy margin of a 5-0 score they returned home to prepare in earnest for the final bout with Guelph. They met the latter at London on Thanksgiving week-end and it might have been a great battle if the elements of nature had not decided on entering the fray. When the final whistle sounded the teams climbed out of the slush and mud to leam that the WOSSA crown had passed into new hands to the tune of another 5-0 score. ., To single out the stars and relate their abilities and accomplishments would require more space than is available here The team had plenty of depth and versatility and gave promise fora formidable varsity squad in 51. 94 • ' ■ Last minute instructions from Fr. Marys in a hard-fought battle. Marquette, Villanova, and Fordham finished this first heat third, fourth, and fifth respectively. CHAMPS The Raider Pucksters tarried the school colours through a long series of glorious triumphs in perhaps the greatest hockey season in the school ' s history. Sweeping undefeated through the ten game regular schedule they easily disposed of Kennedy in the semi-finals of the city race, anil captured the W.S.S.A. trophy by eliminat¬ ing lech in the two-game final round by identical scores ol 4-1. Beal lech of London was next to fall under the axe as they ilropjx ' il a two game series to the Raiders by scores of 2-0 and 8-3. I hen out of the north came a powerful sextet from Owen Sound, who eclipsed the Raiders in ail departments except the score sheet. When the smoke cleared from a rugged battle at the Windsor arena the vistors found themselves on the short end of a 5-1 score, and the Raiders added another trophy to their collection—the W.O.S.S.A. Senior Championship. As the CRUSADER goes to press our boys are packing their bags for an invasion of the north country where they will meet the winners of the Central, Eastern, and Northern Ontario districts in a tournament for the provincial title. Under the tutelage of their highly proficient coach, Father R. J. Cullen, C.S.B., the Raiders developed with amazing rapidity from a mediocre squad at the start of the season into a hard-skating, merciless-checking organi¬ zation. Blind Bill Lucier was a consistent bulwark in the nets and contributed greatly to the team s success. As for offensive power, it would be unfair to single out any stars. Every player gave a star performance in his own department in more than one game. Actually, the successful season was due more to the co-ordinated effort of the team as a whole than to the work of individual stars. Perhaps the story is best told by the score book which shows that the Raiders outscored their opponents 84-19 in a string of eighteen games. RS5UMPTIQH OSSUHTOy TENNIS FRONT ROW: F. Gcni .
