The Knights, making their first State tournament appearance, ended the season with a 29-12 slate. Other bright spots for the 4A champs this year were the All-State appearances by Dob Corbin. Dill Argo and Matt Ambre. Corbin, a first team All-Stater the last two years, compiled some amazing statistics as he batted .512 with 49 RDI’s. For his career, as a four year stater, his statistics are just as impressive. He has a school record of 128 RDI's. 146 runs scored. 46 doubles and a batting average of .417. Argo, the only junior to make the first team All-State squad, batted .454 and scored a total of 56 runs. His stolen base record was just as good as he stole 38 bases in just 41 tries. Ambre. a second team All- Stater. was the Knights top RDI man In the season with 52 while compiling a 9-1 record as the Knights most consistant starting pitcher. It was a sweet ending to the 1981-82 school year as well as a fantastic beginning to the 1982- 83 school year. 1. No doubt os to who is 1 and STATE CHAMPSI 2. When the dust cleared. We easily recognize the differences among the little lost Freshmen, the self-confident Sophomores and Ju- niors, and the big super Seniors. The beginning of the end nears for these Seniors. A lot of challenging and diffi- cult decisions await them. As school progresses so does the football season and hopes of many victorious Fridays nights. Signs of pro- gress are all around us: an improved gym floor complete with new letter- ing and designs, new floors in A- wing and S-wing, new teachers plus an enthusiastic Freshmen class. We've changed too, added many friends, developed true friendships, met a few obstacles, survivedl and hope to have good memories of good times. 1. Senior girls cheer-on the Knights. 2. The halls echo with conversa- tion during Freshmen Orientation. The big event everyone is talking about is Freshmen Frolic. Spon- sored by the Student Council, this night's activities introduces these newest Knights to high school life. Through the lower doors, up the stairs and there awaits Student Council members willing to take the money before the fun begins. Kevin Condon was playing favor- ite tunes while the Student Coun- cil Reps helped everyone get to know one another. The traditional Flashlight Dance got things started. This year the orange and Lifesaver passes were exchanged for Dr. Mixer and the Circle Sit-Down. After the games the dancing began with the Class of '86 in the swingl 1. One tradition was updated, the Senior tope being done live, which turned out to be o big success be- cause one could lough without miss- ing anything. The Senior Skit was worth the effort. As A Knight On Broadway, com- plete with top hats and canes pleased the crowd. The class of '83 honored Pape Roy by presenting him a silver plot- ter in recognition of his twenty-five years at AHS. Many ate at such places as The Dock, Smugglers Inn and for those who wanted an evening they would always remember, The Plantation. This year many people also chose to have a dinner party at someones house. This idea proved to be less expensive and there was no waiting for a table! Students then went to the sce- nic AHS cafe to dance to the music of The Shakes . The music was great and everyone enjoyed themselves. After the dance many couples chose to take in a party or two and some even carried the night into the morning with breakfast. Any way you look of it the whole week proved that Even The Knights Are Better ! 1) Couples shore the night together. 2) 'Whot s so funny The- rese?” 3) Doncin' to the music of ’The Shakes'. 4) John Trovolto? Dennis was friend, classmate, brother — a true Knight who will be missed. 58 Underclassmen somosmxs Amy Domes David Borrett Dridger Decker Koylo Decker Jeanne Bedford Colleen Dehan Lisa Deiwel John Derger Linda Beyer Chris Dlack Corey Blevins Karen Doecker Brad Dollman Mike Boyd Sean Drocken Paulo Brelfboch Lisa Dressanelli Kelly Bridges Teresa Drinker Pete Broderick Underclassmen 59 Julio Abel Scott Andrews Mike Arth Tracey Arvidson Brad Azzoline Tracy Backus Vickie Browne Cofhy Drownson Clorence Duehl Dan Burke Chris Burkholder Por Burr Bob Bush Pete Bysredf Mork Carsfens Mott Covonough Kris Conord Ed Conroy Chris Cook Don Cusock Bob DeMeyer Pot Dengler Don Denny Bob DeToeye Kothy Ditch Dole Donovan Jim Duox cir eBc ssciMT Party Evans Anne Feeney Katie Feltz Renuko Ferdinands Mindy Francis Mike Frazer Eric Freiburger Gigi Gadient Ivan Galysh John Gerety Pofti Glowacki Dob Glowacki Debbie Gluba Tom Gould Jeff Greim Dawn Griffith Dill Grogan Amy Hommes Jenny Hart Richard Hartman Underclassmen 61 Nicole Hlovoty Undo Hood Jim Houghton John Howord Mott Huber David Jock Chris Jocobsen Margaret Jasper Jim Jestel John Johnson Clore Kodovy Joe Kakert David Kay Chris Keding Kim Keefe 62 Underclossmen Leo Kelly Tim Klrsch John Klein Joel Konrardy Jill Laity Louro Lawler Ed Leahy Dan Limberf Dave Linehan Jamie Livermore C SS OP 85 Theresa Logan Tom Logan Joyce Luchrel Steve Lynch Angelo Lyphouf Mark Mahoney Joe Maher Chris Mai Steve Marinan Mike Marinelli Joe Morley Mary Martens Jim Martin Thomas Mason Mike Moyer Jeff McAleer Mory McCoy Kevin McDonnell Art McGlvern Jon McNeil Scott Melster Mitzi Menster Mike Merritt Lori Mesmer Down Metzger John Micko Stocie Miller Pete Moldr Dove Monty Lisa Moore Cothy Mullin Kris Nelson Renee Nopel Louro Notion John Noumon Rob Nelles Mory Nolon Anne Noth Heather O'Drien Noro O'Drien Tim O'Drien Chris O'Deon 64 Underclassmen t sopnoxnooes Margarita Ramirez Kelli Reiling Debbie Resnick Pat Reyes Kathy Rice Chris Richards Mott Ricketts Nancy Roberge Guy Robertson Amy Sam berg Mike Soskowski Karl Schave Mary Schebler Erin Schilling Kathy Schlichting Lenee Schloemer Steve Schmieder Mark Schneider Michelle Schrobilgen Ann Sehmann Underclassmen 65 Karyn Serrurier Undo Sherler Steve Shumaker Lisa Sieverrsen Tony Sirno Angie Smith Michoelo Smith Shelly Smith Barb Snider Julie Stoub Michele Thompson Burt Tieso Dean Tompkins Chris Trilk Ashley Vohl Steve Verdon Tony Vermeer Marie Vielbig Deno Votroubek Don Wallace Potty Wordell Tereso Watson Eileen Wedig Angie Whitmer Nancy Williams John Winborn Erin Wolfe Party Wolfe John Yore's Glen Yoke roesnoKii Motf Beecher Mork Bernal Cheryl Betcher Jackie Beyer Mike Blessing Roger Boche Cheryl Bolton Tracy Bolton Betsy Boyd Kelley Brennan Glno Bressanelli Chris Bridges Kris Bridges Amy Britt Dan Brookhart Jennifer Brownson Chris Bryson Nancy Buck Eileen Burke Kelly Burke 66 Underclassmen John Durkholder Mott Durnetr Mike Dystedt Kevin Coffery Luis Costro Phil Cervontes Chris Cockmon Erin Conroy Jeff Corrigon Koro Cumming '£ ' WING- Lynne Decker Chris DeMeyer Doug Dillon Mike Ditch Donno Doenges cU2 120A55tT2t’|2 Jill Gallagher Mike Gasser Paul Glowacki Mott Gluba John Goedken Steve Goldermann Amy Grady Pat Gripp Dill Haase Wendy Hackett Mott Haisron Sue Hall Jerome Halligan Michelle Hommill John Hancock Lisa Hansen Lynn Hansen Dave Hart Kathy Hartvigsen Katie Hayes 70 Underclassmen Greg Heimonn Rachel Heinrichs Dob Helthoff John Henkhous John Hensley Shelly Hildebrand Megan Hines Lisa Hinrze Danny Horkullc Par Howard Dorinda Hummel Joleen Irish Lisa Irvin Darb Jacobsen Eric Jansen Ann Jasper Doug Jennings Carrie Jensen Meg Jesrel Kim Johnson Tom Johnsron Paul Kokerl Tommy Keefe I V Kris Keisker Jim Kelly Srephanle Klrsch a SS OP «£ Andreo Lenoghan Teresa Lenertz Julie Light Steve Livernois Tricio Loecke Theresa Long Anna Lyngholm Mary Mahaney Dill Maher Tracy Morinan fewi S J - ir Kothy Martin Everett Mason Dob Motthys Dove McAtee Amy McCleory Ray McDevitt Chris McDonnell Tracy Mclllece Chris McIntosh Michelle McKee 72 Underclassmen Thereso McKeon Molly Menk© Orod Merritt Mott Metzger Ann Miller Julio Miller Julie Miller Don Molyneoux Dill Morrissey Tino Murphy Cherri Noughton Kathy Ney Theresa Nichols Denice Oberbroeckling Jomie O'Brien Dob O’Brien Tom O'Brien Nancy Oliver Andreo Olson Tony Olson Ann O'Neill Amy Ossowski Steve Pedersen Wade Perry Brian Phipps Teresa Pohlmeyer Underclassmen 73 Kelly Poftrotz Kelly Powell Tony Pulido Cheryl Purcell Chris Quigley Sherry Ramsdole Mark Rousenberger Sindi Reiling Soroh Reyes Mike Reyhons vwsnemi p k I J SL jQ A n vl jpl 4 m Karlo Schmieder Doug Schrad Jim Sears Kelly Sedlocek Dove Sekhoron John Shoroion Jeff Rice Joe Richmond Jeff Rodgers Jennifer Romonchek Missy Roush John Ruhl Mike Sanders Mork Schofer Meg Schebler Lorie Schloemer '4 PS L «i - rj id 1H i. i f? Being performed for the first time by a Quad-City high school, it was welcomed into the area with standing ovations both nights. Taken from the Book of Genesis this modern rock opera, written by Tim Rice with the original music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, traces the trials and tribu- lations of Joseph, the youngest of Ja- cob's twelve sons. Tryouts for the show consisted mostly of students singing, doing a few dance steps and putting their best foot for- ward. Out of the sixty students that tried out only twenty-nine were chosen. Mr. Watson directed the show with the help of Ms. McRill as music director ond Mr. Koenigsaecker as technical di- rector. Kathy LaFrenze was hired as the Choreographer. 1. Approximately 45 students loaded the bus at 7:00 am. They reached Sundown just In time for opening. For many it was their first time on skis, or more commonly, on the ground! Dy the end of the day AHS students could be seen racing down all the slopes. At 4:00 skis were turned in. The bus loaded and stopped for a quick meal at The Golden Arch- es . Dy 7:00 when the bus pulled in everyone was ready for a hot bath. The only complaint heard about the trip was that no one got the chance to see their favorite Religon teacher on skis! « HEAD FOR THE MOUNTAINS VALENTINES DAY With the beginning of Februory signs beoring such messages as Ichhibedich , Jag alskar dig , Te Quiero , and An Amoro in , appeared peared. Chris McAfee was cho- sen King with Dill Argo. Todd Mey- er. Scott Jasper. Mike Vonderhaar and Phillippe Burtonboy as his court. Chris Really Appreciated the honor and thanked the Seniors for it! With thoughts of Turnabout came memories of lost years ex- periences of dead cars and frostbite all due to record breaking lows. This year the weather coop- erated with not even an inch of snow. Coming Attractions” provided the music with tickets selling for S12.00. Girls were dressed in casu- al attire ranging from the tuxedo look” to preppie and traditional •kirfs and blazers. Guys were seen in suits and ties. Dinner par- ries once again proved to be the popular way to dine. He was as- sisted by Fr. John Clarke who serves as Chaplain at Marycrest. The topic for the retreat was con- victions. The day consisted of large group presentations in the aud and small group discussions. Each small group had a Junior or Senior who was chosen by the Re- ligion Dept, to be its host. The host tried to get everyone acquainted and usually ended up leading the discussion. The day ended with mass in the gym. Students found the day to be meaningful and liked this years format of only one class in each small group much better that last years mixing of the classes. A DAY OF REFLECTION ASH WEDNESDAY Each year with the start of Lent our thoughts turn to What should I give up this year? . Many times we simply give up something be- cause we feel obligated. The problem with this is we don't understand why we give up some- thing. When receiving ashes we forget the pur- pose and simply receive them because it's Ash Wednesday and that is what you do on Ash Wednesday. When asked. Fr. Vrba explained the ashes symbolize that we are going to die someday, and the idea that God created us from the ashes of the earth. Lent is the time to get rid of what keeps us from God and others. REMEMBER YOU ARE DUST AND TO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN 1) Our Fathers Speigel. Sreinle and OKumu. 2) The body of Christ. 3) Remember you ore dust and to dust you shall return. 4) Gail Froncione thanked the student body for participating in the River Youth Hunger Project. 5) Students and teachers assisted in the distri- bution of ashes. Student Life 127 1982-83 As Spring Fever hits Assump- tion High School so do thoughts of the summer months oheod. Many junior ond senior girls con be found sitting outside trying to get o heod start on their ton. Freshmen look forward to the time when they will no-longer be the babies of the school, sophs become upperclassman and juniors will at last be SEN- IORS!! Then come the Seniors who, if they survive graduation festivities, will either go on to college to further their educa- tion or possibly get a job to live on their own. WHAT A GREAT YEAR TOURNAMENT TIME The Girl's Sfofe Tour- nament ended in it's first game of district play with a disap- pointing loss to Pleas- ant Valley at the North Scott gym. It's been a good season. Coach Pat Houlahan said as he sums up the '82-83 girls season. Julie Fitz- patrick took a first team all conference spot and a third team all state in her junior season. Tracy Stuckel was also a first team all conference while being named honor- able mention on the all state team. Looking forward to next season the Lady Knights are returning all six start- ers and Coach Houla- han predicts that, We should be strong. The Knights should be highly rated and Julie Fitzpatrick adds, I think that we'll be really tough to beat. Tournament Time 131 TOURNAMENT TIME 132 The AHS Gymnasts make it 5 in a row for the Assumption girls gymnosrics squad. It just seems that when spring rolls around at Assumption we go to Des Moines to support our boy's basketball and girl's gymnastics squad. We are proud of our girl’s and they qualified for the State tournament February 26 by taking third in the regional competition at the Marion Linn-Mar gym. The gymnists finished behind Clinton who took second with a 170.65 mark and the host Marion Linn-Mar squad who took first with a 171.2 score. At the State tourna- ment March 12. held in the Ankeny gym which was the first time in ten years that it wasn’t held in Des Moines’ Veterans Auditorium. Assump- tion took 4th with a 165.05 score. Taking the top spot again was Linn-Mar with 172.7 mark. Mickie Thomp- son was the only As- sumption gymnists to Tournament Time TOURNAMENT TIME place. She was 4th on the balance beam with a 8.05 score. We wotked hard. We just had a couple of events where we weren't where we wonted to be.” Coach Christensen said. It'll give us insight for next year.” We'll be back as we have no seniors on this years team. Congratulations girls on your tremendous season and good luck in next year s competi- tion. State Champs in '82. opened its second sea- son March 1. The boys hod seven game win- ning streak and plans for making their fourth trip in a row to the State tournament. Davenport Central (12- 7) was the first round District opponent. This game proved to be a gutty performance by the Assumption squad and the most exciting Assumption basketball game in a few years. Bedlam reigned for those Knight fons who managed to squeeze into a jam-packed Davenport West gym where AHS eked out a 52-50 OT victory. The Knights took an early 8-7 lead until Central's long range bomber Randy Van- maanan popped a few three pointers to spark the Blue Devils to a 14-8 first quarter lead. The two squads traded baskets until the Knights managed a 23-22 halftime ad- vantage. If the first half wasn't enough, the second half, minute by minute, proved to be a game which will be remembered by Knight fans for a long time. Guard play from Matt McGowan and Ed Conroy with help from Dill Argo off-the-bench proved to be the de- ciding factor in the game. The Knights were down by four, 48-44, with a minute 14 seconds left in the 134 Tournoment Time TOURNAMENT TIME boll game. After some great play and shoot- ing from Conroy the score was knotted 48- 48 with (:37) left. De- fense caused Central to throw the ball away again under their basket. With 16 seconds left the Knights called timeout. Three in-and-out As- sumption shots later the Knights found themselves in over- time. A Reipe tip, McGowan 18’ the Knights led 50-48 and controlled the ball. Fouled. McGowan calmly canned 2 free throws. A final DD bas- ketball at the buzzer left It 52-50. The Knights hod Dumped the Devils” and were ready to Fry the Falconsl” March 3. the Knights took on Davenport West to continue in there trip to the state tournament and beat the Falcons 45-37. Three year starter Matt McGowan popped in 23 points with three three-point field goals. The Falcons played a close game for the first three quarters and were down by one 32- SI with the ball and 4:00 minutes to play. But the Knights hot four quick baskets and canned 5 of 6 from the line to preserve the win. The Knights next challenge on its way to state is the Burling- ton Greyhounds who the Knights defeated two times earlier in the season. Toumoment Time 105 TOURNAMENT TIME Assumption, now with o ten gome win- ning streak, wanted that sub state victory over Burlington. Two down, 1 to go. Only Burlington stood in the Knights way to State. The Knights took an early 16-8 lead and never looked back. Matt McGowan and Tony Lunardi tied for scoring honors with 17 apiece. 12 of three points shots. The As- sumption squad also shot an excellent 84% from the charity stripe while making 22 of 26. The Knights took 30- 21 halftime lead and it appeared they would have no more prob- lems but the Grey- hounds didn't rollover and play dead as they cut the Knights lead to two early in third peri- od. A 16-footer by Dave Daniels and his only field goal of the game, put Assumption up by 4 and well on its way. Tony Lunardi and his fourth quarter free throw shooting display also were evident when the Knights fans began their post game party on the Musca- tine gym floor. The Knights would now bring their throng of Assumption fans to Veterans Auditorium for the first round of State. West Des Moines Dowling, 15-6 would be our first op- ponent on March 16th. 136 Tournament Time TOURNAMENT TIME For the fourth yeor in o row Assumption's Basketball Knights were welcomed to Veterans Auditorium. With hopes of defend- ing its 3A champion- ship of a year ago the Knights drew West Des Moines Dowling for a 1st round contest. As- sumption couldn' seem to get on track in the first quarter. Every shot took a Dowling bounce, off the bank- board, off the rim. After a disastrous 1st quarter the Knights fought back and though never taking the lead, they never gave Dowling a chance to feel they had won the contest. Good performances were turned in by sophomore Eddie Con- roy who led the Knights with 18 points. Senior Bill Argo who saw limited action dur- ing the season made some key steals and offensive rebounds. The final 69-55 gave the Knights only their 5th loss of the season. The team, not consid- ered a contender in Oct '82, worked, shot, worked, and jelled to become Mlssissippi-tri champs. District win- ner, Sub-State winnets, and one of the best teams in the State. Just as the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers join to form the greot Father of Waters and sweep toward the sea, so will Immacu- late Conception Academy and St. Ambrose Acade- my join to fulfill a new and greater destiny for the Catholic people of this community through the cre- ation of Assumption High School.... Grant that they who are the last of the glorious line of teachers at I.C.A. and St. Ambrose Academy may now become the pioneers in the new As- sumption High School. Immaculate Conception Academy and St. Am- brose Academy have fulfilled their sublime and novel destinies; LONG LIVE ASSUMPTION HIGH SCHOOL. Taken from ICA's 1958 Graduation Address by Msgr. With the enthusiosm of the students, the dedicotion of the foculty ond the support of porents ond alumni. Assumption moves Into the future. 1956-1963 Twenty five years of growth and develop- ment, but in the lost four years we've hod our shore of great times. REMEMBER: .... Going to State for Basketball ond Baseball! And being 1. .... Going to Central ond West for Driver's Ed. in plaid skirts ond white blouses. .... Finally being able to drive to gomes ond donees without on escort. ____ Coming to school smelling like o bottle of Tabu ond being tied to the flagpole, on your birthday. .... First adventures of skipping out and not being caught. .... Our first ond only downtown homecoming parade. .... Fools ot Gould’s on Oct. 31, 1982. .... Bonfires, Del's parties, Breakfast at Junge , post game parking lot parties. .... Shoring new friendships and enjoying the old ones. All in all we’ve grown together to become the class of '63 which will leave their mark on Assumption in the grades to follow. Graduation night we will all be together for one last laugh, one last cheer, and may- be a tear or two. So here's to you, the CLASS OF '83; we couldn't have made it without all of you!! Special Thanks to: Sr. Marcia Costello for her advice and putting up with all of our troubles. •The Parents Club for their financial support.
