Soundoff on Sports QUAD-CUY TIMES Tu J«y, Oci. 13. 1ft»1 Although I consider myself a true Bettendorf High School fan, I must say that I lerned a valuable lesson Oct 2. A courageous group of Assumption football play- ers oulhit and outfought a Bulldog team that they had no business beating. (Assumption won, 10-3, in over- time.) As I sat in the Bulldog rooting section before the game, I actually felt sorry for the small Assumption squad (which I numbered at 37). Bettendorf’s squad was at least twice as big. Bettendorf’s linemen out- weighed Assumption’s by 20 to 30 pounds a man. The Knight’s had a 5-8 defensive back cover our 6-8 receiver man to man. In short, it looked like a college team against a high school team. I heard my fellow ‘fans’’ before the game laugh with glee at the apparent disparity between the two teams. The laughter turned to shocked silence, how- ever. when those small Knight lineman wifted through our huge offensive line like water through a leaky dike. I found myself silently rooting for these gutty kids who didn’t know that they were not supposed to man- handle this physically superior team My hat is off to the Assumption football team The Assumption fans have a lot to be proud of. You proved that true winning football is not physical size, greater numbers, the best equipment and facilities money can buy. It's something called heart and character. I hope the Bulldog team and the Bulldog fans learned that lesson. I know I did A Bulldog fan and a Knight admirer iball • Varsity Football • Varsity Football • Varsity Football • Vai 1. The kick-off team lead by Captain Mike Chupka charged across the 40 yard line as soon as Tim Condon boomed the ball downfield. 2. Scott Micklewright got his hits at the Alleman game. Tom Doyle and Craig Stear wanted a piece of the action, too. 3. Perry Riepe did get the ball away thanks to good protection from Mike Matson, Bob Corbin and Dan Delleman.
