Soundoff on Sports QUAD-CUY TIMES Tu J«y, Oci. 13. 1ft 1 Although I consider myself a true Bettendorf High School fan, I must say that I lerned a valuable lesson Oct 2. A courageous group of Assumption football play- ers oulhit and outfought a Bulldog team that they had no business beating. (Assumption won, 10-3, in over- time.) As I sat in the Bulldog rooting section before the game, I actually felt sorry for the small Assumption squad (which I numbered at 37). Bettendorf’s squad was at least twice as big. Bettendorf’s linemen out- weighed Assumption’s by 20 to 30 pounds a man. The Knight’s had a 5-8 defensive back cover our 6-8 receiver man to man. In short, it looked like a college team against a high school team. I heard my fellow ‘fans’’ before the game laugh with glee at the apparent disparity between the two teams. The laughter turned to shocked silence, how- ever. when those small Knight lineman wifted through our huge offensive line like water through a leaky dike. I found myself silently rooting for these gutty kids who didn’t know that they were not supposed to man- handle this physically superior team My hat is off to the Assumption football team The Assumption fans have a lot to be proud of. You proved that true winning football is not physical size, greater numbers, the best equipment and facilities money can buy. It's something called heart and character. I hope the Bulldog team and the Bulldog fans learned that lesson. I know I did A Bulldog fan and a Knight admirer iball • Varsity Football • Varsity Football • Varsity Football • Vai 1. It was based on the book 7Vi Cents by Richard Bissell. A new foreman, Sid Sorokin, has just been hired in a pajama factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is a man with principles and wants to suc- ceed in his job. Unknown to him, he starts working right in the mid- dle of a conflict between the Union and management over a 7Vi cent raise. Love strikes Sid as he runs into beautiful Babe Williams, head of the Union’s Grievance committee. She’s self-assured and knows what she wants, namely, Sid. For the wres- tlers, that meant Dis- tricts and this years' trip to Muscatine, Feb. 27th where the Knights' met- tle would be tested. Heading into the Tourna- ment were: 98 lbs. Guy Robertson 105 lbs. Frank Marinelli 112 lbs. Vern Doenges 119 lbs. Matt VanLandschoot 126 lbs. Jerry Gusta 132 lbs. Craig Czupka 138 lbs. Dennis Gould 145 lbs. Mike Flynn 155 lbs. Steve Leahy 167 lbs. Todd Meyer 185 lbs. Jay Cline HWY. Craig Stear From the field of twelve grapplers, two wrestlers qualified for State: Den- nis Gould at 138 and Matt VanLandschoot at 119. In the District tourna- ment VanLandschoot won the 119 lb. title with a pin over a Muscatine wrestler. Gould came up short at 138 to Scott De- Vinney, also of Musca- tine, but qualified in the wrestle-back. 132 Tournament Time At State both of the boys met stiff competition. Dennis drew Randy Wa- sham of Bettendorf and Matt met Tim Kriegen of Mason City. Gould was defeated by Washam 14-4 in the first round. Washam eventu- ally finished in 4th Place at State. VanLandschoot lost to Kriegen who fin- ished as State Champion at 119. Gould was pleased with his trip to State. “I gained experience for next year. I enjoyed watching the other wres- tlers as well as getting four days off school.” Dennis ended the sea- son with a record of 26-6- 1. VanLandschoot would love to wrestle for Iowa but added, “I plan to go to a Junior College and wrestle there.” Bettendorf, State Champs for the last two years, will again be the favorite in Mississippi next year. But both Den- nis and Mark feel that the Assumption wres- tling program is on the up-swing. They also feel that Coach DeAnna helped them work harder, improve tech- niques and set higher goals. Gould said, “It was a good season, there was more support and the Mat-Maids were a big help.” VanLandschoot stated, “It’s been great wres- tling for Assumption.” 133 Tournament Time 1979! 1980! 1981! 1982! Four years in a row the Assumption Girls Gym- nastics team, one of the best in the state, earned the right to go to the State Tournament. The girls qualified for State in the Regional competition, Feb. 27 at the Knights' gym. They finished 2nd to the 1- ranked Clinton squad. 170.35-173.05. The Knights overcame sea- son-long Balance Beam problems to win that event, but it wasn't enough to dethrone Cli- ton, the defending State champs. Assumption Coach June Christensen said, It shows that this Eastern part of the state is really strong right now. Also, with all these teams from the Mississippi 8, I think it makes our Conference about the toughest in the state. Tammy Droste, Clinton, took the All-Around title with 36.5 points, and placed in all other events. Beth Figge took 4th in All-Around and won the Vault with a score of 9.25. “The girls really hung to- gether and went at it in Regionals, Coach Christensen said. “We had very few falls today. Everybody did a super job. 134 Tournament Time March 12th found the girls loading their lug- gage for the trip to Des Moines and the State Tournament. Assump- tion was proud to have these girls represent our school: SENIORS Beth Figge Kathy Mooney JUNIOR Peggy McDermott SOPHOMORES Maggie Resnick Kathy Riley Tina Timmerman FRESHMEN Heidi Edens Marret Pohlmann Debbie Resnick Dena Votrubek Patty Warded Competition was March 13 in Des Moines. By noon it was all over. Clin- ton retained its' State championship. Assump- tion Knights took third with a score of 166.95. Beth Figgs was the only Knight to place and she came in third in Floor Exercises. Coach Christensen was pleased with the team’s performance. “The girls did a really good job. I couldn’t have asked for more,” she continued. “The competition was just that much tougher this year. Hoover High of Des Moines had a super day.” Assumption's Floor Ex- ercises and Beam were good, but the girls had problems in Tumbling and on the Bars. Our Gymnastic Knights have put two trophies in our trophy case in four years. Next year, just maybe, the girls can win the State championship. 135 Tournament Time First round Tournament action for the Assump- tion Girls Basketball team was against Dav. Central. The girls waltzed passed the Blue Devils with a 78-58 victo- ry on our home court, Feb. 15th. The girls had no problems with their cross-town rivals. Moni- ca Missel pumped in 42 pts. on 16-of-25 from the field. Colleen Blough and Julie Fitzpatrick each had 15 pts. for the Knights. Advancing to the second round, the AHS girls took on North Scott's team. The girls outmanue- vered the Lancers and came away with a 78-56 victory. Missel again lead the scoring with 37 points while Colleen Blough added 19. Going into their last game of Sectional play the Knights, again with- out Coach Pat Houlahan who was fighting a bout with pneumonia, came through with a 66-56 vic- tory, over Dav. West. The early game was tight until Monica hit 5-of-6 shots to give the Knights an 18-13 first quarter lead. Assistant Coach Therese Walatka said, “They were executing too fast but finally we be- gan working for our shots.” And work they did!! The girls shot an amazing 28-of-43 from the field led by Missel's 17-of-25 and 43 pts. The 4th ranked Knights came one step closer to a second trip to the State Tournament with a 75-38 rout over the Maquoketa Cardinals. The girls high scoring machine was led by star forward Missel with 36 points on 14-of- 26 from the field. The stingy guard court was led by Kathy McCabe and Julie Fitzpatrick. Steph Smith was again 136 brilliant as she pulled down 18 rebounds. Only 1 Mediaplois stood in the way of the Knights returning to State. Try as they might, the Knights came up short 54-50 and bowed out of the Tournament race at the Sub-State level. The girls played a hard- fought ball game before Mediapolis gained con- trol in the see-saw fourth quarter when they held a commanding 45-38 lead. This was the biggest lead by either team all night. With that cushion the Bullettes played a delay game forcing the Knight guards to foul them. How proud we have been of the girls, their play and their Coach Pat Houlahanl They're 1 with us all the way! COACH THERESE WALATKA Tournament Time Tournament Time Assumption began its trek for its third consecutive State Tournament bid when Districts began March 1. The Knights jumped their first hurdle by de- feating Dav. Central 43-32 on the Dav. West court. Key factor in the game was the stingy defense of the once- beaten Knights which forced Dav. Central into 25 turnovers. Bill Bush came off the bench contributing 4 points and 4 steals. •BLOWOUT!” That was the Quad-City Times' way of de- scribing the 63-46 Assumption victory over Bettendorf. March 3. Besides advancing in State play, this victory repaid Bet- tendorf for handing the Knights their only defeat of the season. The 19-3 first quarter rout was started by Steve Dockery’s 8’ jumper. A few baskets by Matt McGowan and the Knights were their way fast-breaking to a 34-9 half time score. The hustling defense of Brice McPherson, Dockery and McGowan complimented Dean Tandeski's 15 point 2nd half splurge. The roaring Assump- tion fans were also spurred on by Mike Daniel's dunk shot near the end of the game. Tan- deski had 17 pts., Dockery 13 pts. and McGowan 11. The Knights met Dubuque Humpstead in Clinton on March 5 for Sub-State action. With a 62-36 romp over Hemp- stead, the Knights were head- ed toward Des Moines. The Assumption side of the River King gym was packed red and white as the Knights jumped to a 12-6 first quarter lead. Though the Knights gave the Mustangs trouble under- neath, at half time the score was only 25-17. 138 Tournament Time The 3rd quarter went wild when Coach Glenn McPherson picked up two technicals for protesting some rough play under the baskets. The Mus- tangs could only capitalize on 2 of the 4 technical shots and the Knights held a 7 pt. lead at the beginning of the 4th quar- ter. Assumption's inside game was outstanding the rest of the way as the boys out-scored Du- buque 24-10 in the 4th quarter. The Assumption crowd stormed the court, mobbed each other and carried seven players on their shoulders. The shouting rang loud and clear, “Des Moines. HERE WE COME!” The Knights first game at State was against 3rd ranked Ankeny (20-2) on March 17. ‘Sure an ’twas a happy St. Paddy's Day' for the AHS squad as they used their tournament know-how to post a 67-57 first round victory. Assumption jumped to a quick 24-12 first quarter lead. Tan- deski keyed the first quarter burst with 2 three point plays. Daniel bombed in a 25 jumper off the board with :02 on the clock to end the 2nd quarter. The Knights entered the final quarter with a 10 point lead. The Hawks pulled within 6 at 61-55 with 5 buckets in a row before Tandeski and McPher- son took command. Tandeski’s free throws and McPherson's four point play and the Knights smelling victory. Tandeski lead the Knights in scoring with 24 points. Daniel added 10 points even though he sat out most of the game because of foul trouble. McGowan put in 12 while keep- ing Ankeny honest with his deadly outside jumpers. Big roles were played by Bush and Perry Riepe who came off the bench for the foul-plagued starters. Coach McPherson praised the boys saying, “We got some outstanding bench play from Riepe and Bush when we needed it.” 139 QUAD-CITY TIMES Saturday, March 20, 1982 Knights need one more Tandeski's bucket puts Assumption into finale tonight with S.C. North The Semi-Final game of the State Tournament play pitted the Knights against Waverly- Shell Rock, a small 3A school, against the mighty Knights. This nail-bitting, heart-thump- ing game went down to the wire. Dean Tankeski's basket off the board with :05 seconds left gave the Knights a hard- fought 35-34 victory. The game started off tightly and remained that way for the next 32 minutes. As the half neared Mike Daniel pulled-off another buzzer-beater. As in the Ankeny game, his 20' jump- er from the left side of the lane gave Assumption a 19-18 half time lead. The back-and-forth play con- tinued in the 3rd quarter with both teams scoring only 14 points. Tandeski put the Knights ahead with a tip-in at the 3:44 mark of the 4th quarter. Both teams exchanged bas- kets and defensive strategy. Assumption’s dreams for a State Championship were al- most dashed as Waverly-Shell Rock hit a jump shot with :47 seconds remaining to give the Go-Hawks a 34-33 lead. As- sumption then called time out to set up Tandeki'8 heroics. “I thought I got fouled when I put the ball up the first time, Tandeski said. When it rolled off the rim, I was in a good po- sition to get the rebound, so I took the ball back up.” But the game was not finished yet. Many Assumption follow- ers had flashbacks of last year's last second shot by Dub. Wahlert which knocked the Knights from the finals of the 1981 State Tournament. Waverly-Shell Rock's down court pass went out-of-bounds. :01 second remained on the clockl All Assumption had to do was get the ball in-bounds. McGowan fielded the ball up- court as the horn sounded. 140 QUAD-CITY TIMES Sunday. March 21, 1982 At last! In the 3rd quarter the North Stars challenged the Knights and surged ahead 33-32. A ba- seliner by Steve Dockery re- turned the lead to the Knights. Then Dockery canned a three point play and the Knights nev- er looked back. The Stars attempted a come- back cutting the Knights' lead to one, 42-41. The boys rallied, scored the next eight points and cruised to the sweetest victory ever!!! Mike Daniel lead the Knights with 17 points. Steve Dockery was next in Assumption's bal- anced scoring attack with 14 points. It’s our first experience with the “real” world. The years in high school have been preparing us. The more we become in- volved in activities, the more we realize how important these experiences are. The posi- tive values of Assumption become a part of our lives. It’s up to us to use them. The Yearbook offered a challenge: responsi- bility, pressure, and hard work, all leading to the successful publication of a Yearbook. It’s an experience I will not soon forget. The 1982 Yearbook could not have been pos- sible without the needed help of the follow- ing: -The Assumption Parents Club. -Sr. Marcia Costello. -The photographic assistance of Mr. Keith Riewerts and Mark C. Belli Photography -The Quad-City Times. -The whole Yearbook staff, and section edi- tors. -But most importantly, the entire Assump- tion community. 180 uiuiuyy ii ooj. ioviestacosa irewritingjur sinessphotoi hestra finals hedulechenn inghumaniti Die tests scie 5. a u nam di rt grades cro iorsgamesc iraphy cafetc dance pizza r stry band ac s sophomor ice groupsqi aksummerfa — ■ - -
