Homecoming includes a number of different people whom I would like to acknowledge: nTo the faculty who have given me more than words in a book. You have shown me Assumption is more than just people, but a united family who shares in victory as well as defeat. Through this I have found the values of a Catholic Education. To all the alumni- thank you for the traditions you have built and passed on to us. To the students- it is you who keep the tradition and ex- citement of Homecoming alive. It is you who I represent as queen. To my parents who have given me the opportunity to grow In the very best way here at Assumption. Last but not least, to the senior class. We've been through a lot together and now the big year has come. I am proud to say I am a member of the class of 79 . I wouldn't give anything to change these last four years I've had here at Assumption. Thank you for making my senior year very, very special. There is one special senior I'd like to thank and that is my sister Michelle. It is often hard to be a twin and I know this is one of them. YEAR OF THE CHAMPS” Mississippi Eight Conference Champs City Conference Champs Assumption Claims Davenport Crown By Mikr Ebbing of lh« Timm Assumption is the new king of high school boys basketball in Davenport John F. Kennedy was President the last time the .Knights could make such a claim Not since the 1960-61 season, when Davenport High School split into Central and West, has Assumption commanded the upper hand in head-to-head battles with the city’s two public high schools Assumption, with Matt Wiebler playing probably the finest game of his prep career, nipped Central 70-08 Friday night at Marshall Gym. . WIKBLFR SCORED a game- high 27 points — 11 of which came in the tense fourth quarter All the wiry senior did in the final eight minutes was make one basket and 9- of-9 free throws. For the night, Wiebler made U-of-U charity tosses — helping his club to a sparkling 16- of-17 from the line. The victory was the second in as many games over Central this sea- son Assumption split its two contests with West giving the Knights a 3-1 record in the city series. The times call for thinking and straight thinking - one of the goals of true education. Unfortunately, the world so clamors for action that men and women devote little time to thinking. The'community of Assumption knows Dr.Sunderbruch well. He has represented St. Mary's parish in the Assumption Board of Education since the inception of the Lay Board in 1968, was a Cabinet member for both the Assumption Advancement Fund drive and Advancement II, founded the Assumption Foundation and is co-founder of the Sunderbruch — O'Donnell Scholarship Fund. Thousands of young people reap the benefits of his con- tributed services. Through the years Dr. Sunderbruch has lec- tured in numerous classes. He has served as physican for all the athletic teams of Assumtpion and its predecessor, St. Am- brose Academy, for over 40 years. A reception honoring Dr. Sunderbruch will follow the dedication ceremonies. 1968-1969-1970-1971-1972-1973-1974-1975-1976-1977-1978 Dr. John Sunderbruch Auditorium Faith is the only answer . . . Tom Sunderbruch John O'Donnell Two young cousins, 15 year old Tom Sunderbruch, Jr., and 14 year old John O’Donnell, Jr., were fun-loving boys. With their uncle, Norman Ash, Tommy and John left on a late June fishing vacation. Only twenty minutes from home an accident claim- ed their lives. “In the face of a tragedy such as this, we naturally are concerned with the question of why does something like this happen? And the only answer is in our faith.” Father Francis Hendrickson, pastor of St. Mary's, faculty instructor in religion at Assumption and friend of all three made his point in the Mass for the Resurrection. In his homily Father continued to say because of our human nature “that answer is difficult to live with. Nevertheless, we live in an imperfect world and have to put up with imperfec- tions.” Father Hendrickson pointed out that John's beautiful letter asking to be Confirmed in his faith was simple, warm, direct yet personal. John knew what he wanted and was ready for the future. Assumption was to be his first challenge and he eagerly longed to be a freshman - a “real Knight. Already he knew the practice fields and PE areas well and wore Assumption's red and white with pride. We all saw Tommy’s faith in action. Whether he was preparing for a class, attending Mass in the chapel or tajing down and pinning his opponent on the wrestling mat. Tommy’s faith in God and his faith in himself to achieve with God's help was evident. He was an example, a fine example, of our Catholic faith in action. P.H. 175 THERE 1$ N€ PLACE EIRE ASSUMPTION... When we speak of Assumption, we include not only brick and mortar but the heart of the school itself, her people. Teachers and friends, administration and coaches alike have had, and will continue to have a profound ef- fect on our lives. Sometimes in ways so subtle we aren't aware of it, and at other times with a great awareness. Our experiences with the people at Assump- tion will be a large part of the basic founda- tion on which we build our lives. We are a composite of our family experiences and those we have encountered here at Assumption. One of my best experiences in my four years at Assumption has been the participation in yearbook. This yearbook is the product of 1 year's long, hard work. It started last spring with a workshop at St. Ambrose and was being formed all during the summer months. In the fall, while others were busy catching up with friends about their summer, the yearbook staff was busy making preparations for all the com- ing events that would take place during the school year. Then, as clubs were organized, activities were taking place, and games were being played the pages of this book were be- ing drawn up. Nobody knows just how much work goes into each page, until they have at- tempted it themselves. There are a number of people who have helped this book come alive and deserve a thank-you. Among the many: The Parents Club- for their financial support. Sr. Marcia Costello- for her advice and lead- ership. Mark Belli- for his professional photography. AHS teachers- for all their hall passes and their understanding when we didn't have hall passes. The Yearbook Staff- for their hard work and dedication. Sue Niemann, Editor-in-chief .
