Weiman Baptism is unusual for Michael DAVENPORT — When Michael He- uennann prows up and asks his parents about his baptism, Ken and Ruth Heuer- mnnn won't be able to tell him the usual story. Instead of being quietly baptized in an almost empty church on a Sunday after- noon, Michael was baptized last week at Assumption High School as part of a class on liturgy. No, this wasn’t just a demohstration of the baptismal rite. It was for real. While Michael’s baptismal records are on Tile at Holy Family parish here. Ken and Ruth always will know that their second child — and first son — was baptized on November 21, 1977 in the Assumption cha|H. l. I viking on were about 50 students and a few members of the faculty as Father Robert Stacs, who teaches Assumption liturgy classes, performed the sacrament. With students participating in songs and liturgical readings, the rite lasted about 30 minutes. THERE WERE TWO other things that, as baptisms go, were a bit unusual. For one, rather than the usual rite of pouring water over the infant’s forehead, Michael was baptized by immersion into a small tub of holy water. And two students, Chris Remat and Trish Hines, served as godparents. Afterwards, Fr. Staes said his liturgy classes this year are concentrating on the Mass and on baptism. When Michael He - Uermann was bom in August, Fr. Staes realized that a baptism would fit in well with what he was trying to teach. So he began making the arrangements and ac- quiring the necessary permissions for per- forming a baptism at school. He added that the purpose of the lit- urgy classes is not just academic but is also aimed at making the students profi- cient enough in liturgy so they can return to their parishes and work with parish lit- urgy committees. To do that, he has his classes divided into 12 “parish liturgy teams. Those teams have responsibility for preparing a Mass — choosing a theme, picking read- ings and songs, etc. — once every six-day cycle, according to Fr. Staes. The times call for thinking and straight thinking — one of the goals of true education. Unfortunately, the world so clamors for action that men and women devote little time to thinking. Many believe in second-hand thinking. They find it easier to ascertain and adopt the thoughts of others than to think for themselves. — James F Byrnes ELECTRIC COMPANY HEATING WHOLESALERS REFRIGERATION WHOLESALERS DAVENPORT. Summer is almost here and another year has become history. For the Freshmen and Sophomores the year seemed to take forever. The Juniors found it hard to believe that they were almost Seniors. And for the Seniors ... it seems but a short time ago that the year was starting. We all wished that 1 'Senior Year'1 would pass but now, it's gone so fast. The pages of this book become an anthology of this year. Indeed, like a quilt, the memories and experiences of our high school careers are interwoven with our entire existence; along with family and ambitions, they are us. Remember: ....the victory parties at Junge Park. ....as underclassmen it was Happy Joe's, later across the parking lot for a longer evening ....the many parties we attended together. ....hoping a holy day would land on the same day a big test was planned, and praying that the Mass and test were the same mods. .....getting crushed at the Homecoming rally try- ing to catch a football. .....the arena registration system and always hav- ing a conflict that took a couple of hours to resolve. ....the court yard and catching a ' 'few rays''. ....running out on to a muddy field after a slim victory over Central. ....pleading that the clock ' 'just ticked off green and it was the middle of the mod. ....some gallant Knights dressed as cheerleaders for the Homecoming Aud. Thank goodness they got cut. ....football and basketball and all the pre-game strategy in E-2 that spelled a successful victory. ....student council meetings featuring P.H. ....all the wonderful teachers who gave us an A or a B . ....all the mean teachers who gave less than a B ....spaghetti supper, dances, school plays, and all those extra-curricular activities that make school, school. This yearbook is a part of these high school memo- ries, especially for me. There are a number of peo- ple who have helped make it come alive and deserve a thank you. Among the many: The Parents Club......for their financial support. Sister Marcia Costello....for leadership and ad- vice . Mark Belli.....for photography. Mr. Sunderbruch.......for all those hall passes to conduct yearbook business. Mr. Burke......for the use of his phone. The yearbook staff....for their help, encourage- ment and companionship. Mr. Kellenberger......for his shot of advice. Michael E. Amould Editor - in - Chief 176
