'ki 'k fy gg . get Mhk This is the day that I have dreaded for years. I knew it would come, but I feared that day, when the school doors would close behind me and a little piece of paper would say that I had received all that the rooms and halls and lab: had to offer me. It really happened yesterday. I was dremed in cap and gown, I marched proudly and unflinchingly up to receive my diploma: I accepted the congratulations of all my friends and relatives. They gathered at my home to share the not- too - fatted calf. And as they left' they all said, Good luck! The more fervent said: May God be with you, al- ways. I WASN'T GOING AWAY All that happened was that I graduated from high school. Why all these best wishes? I know today. Today I step out into a new world. Today I walk alone as a young person into the bus- iness of making a livelihood for myself, and later on for those whom God will commit to my care. Today I stand by myself Alone- Alone?- No, far from lt. I stand by myself, but not alone. I bring with me many things. FIRST-I bring all the knowledge that for the last twelve years was sometimes poured over my -soft brain, was beaten into my thick head, was somehow or other given me by those who loved and cared for me, more than I knew. I am accompanied also by the great knowledge of God's truth- that I am an all- important speck in the infinity of space. That the Son of God loved me so much that He gladly accepted the throne of the Cross. That my future is not of this world, but for the fu- ture-wlth Him in Heaven forever. With me goes God's laws- to love Him and to love His images which I find ln the souls of other men. ALONE-Why I carry the best wishes of my friends who helped me help myself. Those guys and gals who rounded out my character to make me a better man for a .better world. My folks go with,me too- my Mom whose love for me knew no limits my Dad whose manly virtues were impressed forever on my heart by his good example. My teachers-those consecrated women who worked all day and sometime far into the evening to give me all they could to fit me for this day- they are with me. The priests-God bless them-they will be always with me. In their Masses, their prayers their labors-a con- stant remembrance. And Assumption -High School will be there with me always- the spirit that has pervaded its old halls, came down the staircase to accompany me. ALONE - I am not alone-I stand by myself, but I AM NOT ALONE. And I am NOT afraid because I am going forth in- to a new world to make a mark for myself. I am going out to live according to the pattern of the life of- Christ, which was the way laid out for me. I step forward to be in the world, but not of it. I face the future with hope-because- God and His graces My priest-counsellors, and teachers My friends and relatives ARE with me. 0 God, who loves me 'with an infinite love, direct my steps from.thls day forward. Help me to use all my talents for Thee. Aid me to live my life for Thee. Assist me'to dedicate my body and soul to all that is Thy purpose. I love Thee, Jesus. And I'll never forget you, O Blessed Mother, who meant so much to me dur- ing all my school days. Bless those who have helped me to reach this important day of my life. Keep them always in thy care, that they may continue to bring good into the llves of others. Bless me, too, now more than ever before. Keep me pure and holy. Bring to my heart a burn- ing love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Lord stay with me always. Bless me. May the wishes of all my friends come true. May God be with you always. 1- ADMINI ST RATICDN -5 i 2 5 f Zz 2 HIS HOLINESS POPE PIUS XII XX Most Reverend Most R-Overend Henry P. Rohlman, D. D. Leo Binz, D. D. They are: Madonna Bickford, Katherine Puffer and William Springer. These completed most of their elementary schooling at Assumption: Mildred Jordan, Mi- chaeleen O'Connor, Leo Drilling, Adrian Dusheck and Nancy Staebell. Our Freshmen year found us all wading into high school life with a new determination. Join- ing our class were two Irish lasses from Bluffton, Pauline Jones and Eileen Henry. Marjorie McGee transferred from the country school and Joseph Puffer from the St. Joseph grade school. .Our Sophomore year greeted back the same fzu-es. In our Junior year we traveled across the hallway to join a higher rank, called the Junior- Senior division. We were joined by two girls from Lourdes, Cyrilla Birmingham and Monica Lowe. Alas! Our Senior year tinds us in a room at the end of the hall with the letters reading SENIOR on the door. So we proudly claimed the room and found that Doris Ollendieck would be with us to spend our last days at Assumption. Nancy Stae- bell had also rejoined us after spending the last two years in Des Moines. We all agree that with the many changes tak- ing place, we would enjoy staying for another year to take advantage of the modern facilities. But we realize that we must try to better the world in our own little way and we know that the great traditions of Assumption High School will be car- ried on by our successors. CLASS PROPHESY Donna Bickford will seek employment in Cedar Rapids before- moving to Louisiana. Cy Cirmingham will no doubt work for a year or so and then settle down south of Lourdes. Leo Drilling, our English scholar, will start a law office in Protivin. Duke Dusheck will be a student of Iowa State College studying engineering after which he will go into the paint business. Pauline Jones will be a secretary for some important firm in Cedar Rapids. She says there are no openings in Bluffton. Mildred Jordan will be a beauty operator and intends to study in Waterloo. Later she will make her home near Davis Corners. Monica Lowe within a few years will settle down on a farm and be an A-1 homemaker. Margie McGee plans on taking up Nurses Training in Rochester-unless something else turns up. Mickie O'Connor still holds her ardent inter- est in baseball and basketball. Doris Ollendieck will within a few years be a farmers wife. Joe Puffer will make a handsome colonel in the U. S. M. C. Katherine Puffer will find endless value in her Nurses Training, in raising an Airmanfs family. Bill Springer, Father Bill , will be teaching and coaching basketball and baseball at Loras. Eileen Henry will be buying clothes in New York for her smart little shop in Decorah. Nancy Staebell will be the bead costume de- signer tor Warner Bros. Studios in Hollywood.
