THE G4 PANTHER ASSUMPTION ACADEMY CHADRON, NEBRASKA We, the members of the Panther staff, on behalf of the students of Assumption Academy, wish to dedicate this, our most important source of remembrance, in memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This Is the record compiled by the Religious Sisters of Mercy who first arrived In the frontier town of Omaha 100 years ago after an arduous 1500- mlle journey from Pittsburg. The Sisters of Mercy extended their work In other outstate Nebraska commu- nities. In 192 , Assumption Academy was opened In Chadron, Nebraska. The Sisters have taught here for 40 years. Just to let everyone know what was going on around the school, our paoer was oublished once a month. Unless you had purchased a 25i subscription, each edition cost 5 As editor, Denise Donohue worked with her staff on articles published. Free- dom of expression was encouraged and occasionally guest editorials and articles were printed. As a result, the paper was interesting and enjoyable. This class, sponsored by Father Fllnn, has started organizing a Student Coun- cil which will get under wav next year. President- Josle Schommer, Vice President- Joe Katen, and Secretary- Treasurer, Larry Deans were selected by the Junior Class In the fall of 1963. They are sponsored by Sister Mary Lewis. These three, with the other students in the Junior Class have the responsibility of put- ting on the Junior- Senior Banquet and Prom In May. These three girls were chosen to lead the Sophomore Class! President Janel Chasek, Vice President- Mary Llndekln, Secretary-Treasurer- Connie Korrall. This class ' s soonsored by Sister Mary Laurette. They have undertaken the task of ra sin-T money for next year by school luncheons and other means. II The results of the Freshmen Class elections were: Dave Deans- Pres- ident, Patti Sari- Vice President, Delores Welling- Secretary- Tres- urer. Because Delores had moved the class elected Mary Louise Kubo to take her place. Father Dunning Is their sponsor. Extras at A. A. On Sunday, May 13th the students crowned the Blessed Virgin Mary . Patti Petrik was selec- ted as ieen, with Ida Hostler and Connee Chaulk as attendants. MAY CROWNING Time In Apple Blossom Spring was in the air as the 1963 Junior and Senior Prom opened. An apple tree with beautiful pink blossoms was the center of attraction. Also with spring In mind, the Juniors had a wishing well with flowers floating in it. The Hl-Llghters-Dallas Clark, Budge Crlpps, Rich Burkhlser, and Bill Glllam-entertalned the Juniors and Seniors as they ato their dinner. After the banquet, Connie Lynn gave the Senior Class Prophecy and Patti Petrlk read the Senior Class Will. As a climax to the 1963 Prom, Ida Hostler was crowned Queen and Nick Schommer was crowned King. Connee Chaulk and Joe Farrell were named as their attendants. The Royalty Of 63 Queen Connie Lynn and King Tom Dooley with their attendants Patty McGannon, Kathy Schommer, and Co-Captains Don Marchant and Bob Boeck reigned over the Homecoming. The girls were chosen by the football players. The boys were chosen by the Pep Club and Cheerleaders. On the afternoon of Sept. 25 the Annual Homecoming Coronation was held in the Arena. After the student body sang the school song, Our Queen Will Reign , and An Army Of South’’, Father Dunning announced the Prince and Princess of each classs 3111 Boeck and Patti Earl, DuWayne Burgess and Patti Wegner, Larry Deans and Josie Schommer. After a brief talk by Coach Whiting, the co-captalns and King were revealed. Father Dillon then presented the two attendants and the Queen. Cheerleaders Josie, Mary Pat, and Patti, cheer for a victory with the help of the Pep Club. After the Queen and her attendants rounded the football field, the Queen was presented with a boua.uet of red roses by the King. The an- nouncer gave a brief description about each member of the royalty. The Panthers blasted the Wild- cats when the Panthers came In with a touchdown by first Co- Captain Don Marchant, which left a final score of 26 to 20 victory.' Overwhelmed by their triumphant victory. The Panthers carried Coach Whiting off the field. Crowning of Christ The King On the afternoon of October 25, the annual Crowning of Christ the King was held In the Assumption Chapel. Selected for the honor of crowning was Mike Knueppel, and as assistant Kathy Schommer. Senior Class Rings Are Blessed After the Seniors had placed their rings on the pillow witi, • -rown. Father Flinn blessed them. The students then sang Praise to the Lord. A prayer to Christ the King was recited, and benediction of the blessed Sacrament was held. Retreat Retreat days were peaceful days spent praying, meditating, reading, aid lis- ten'ng to conferences. Everyone con- sidered It enjoyable and profitable. Our retreat master was a Jesuit priest from Holy Rosary Mission, Father Gen- tle. His talks were Interesting and Informative. 3ecause of these grace- filled days, may we become more like Christ. Laurette, R.S.M. Proud of their 1963 SUPERIOR rating at the District VI Contest and eager to maintain it, the Girls' Glee Club strive to perfect the finest of all arts-muslc. Singing and working together is a recreational as well as educational activity. This year they are working on This Is My Country, So's I Can Write My Name,' and The Heavens are Declaring. The Choir sang The Mass of the Shepherds at Midnight Mass, a three part arrangement written by Pietro Yon. Christmas carols were sung before Mass. A two part Laetentur Coeli was sung at the Offertory. On November 29th, the High School Glee Club was asked to sing at the official opening of the Christmas season down- town in front of the City Hall. Father Flinn directed them for Silver 3ells” and Jingle Bells after which they joined the crowd in singing Christmas carols. MIXED CHORUS MIXED CHORUS A four part arrangement of Silent Night was sung by this group at the Christmas Program, December 19. During prac- tice, they sing out of Fred Waring's Song Book. SCHOLA CANTORUM These girls sing the Proper of the Mass every Tuesday and Thursday at dally Mass. FRESHMEN-SOPHOMORE ENSEMBLE Meeting twice a week during the noon hour, these ambitious girls are learning the fundamentals of cor- rect singing. Beautiful tones are heard quite often and soon they will be successfully sing’ng in parts.' I TRIPLE TRIO This group also won a SUPERIOR rating last year. Hop- ing to be equally good this year, they practice twice a week outside school time. Magical Moon is their special number-a difficult but challenging three-part song. Clubs - Publicity K'nda' cluttered now, but here Is a sample of the Publicity Club's hard work. We're proud of you, the bulletin boards have looked nice all year. At the first of the school year, these girls elected as their officers, Janel Chasek- Presldent and Judy Petrlg-Sec- retary-Treasurer. Citizenship Connie Lynn, Julie Tobin, Janel Chasek, Pat Hamous, Judy Petrig, Patty McGannon, and Patsy Linden enjoy making awards for the honor students every nine weeks. Chosen as the leaders of this group were Pat Hamous - President, Patty KcGannon-Vice-President, Julie Tobin-Secretary-Treasurer. The new blue around the school is the project undertaken by this club to raise the money put into the awards. Thanks to this project, almost everyone has his own school sweatshirt. Sponsored by Mr. Whiting, this organization has done a fine Job all year. I We are proud to have as representatives of the hcAuley Club, Patsy Llnden-Vlce-?resident, Connie Lynn-President, and Colleen Goffena-Secretary-Treasurer. These girls hold their meetings every other Thursday night after school. Among the jobs undertaken by th’s Club are: the task of preparing for Retreat, visiting the Rest Homes, cleaning the church and school, and many more odd jobs. He spoke on college in general, and then delved into our number system, number groups, aspects of Trigonometry and some problems in Geometry and Algebra. Connie Lynn— Betty Crocker Homemaker Award Every Wednesday night at 5500, Shirley, Kathy, Pat, Connie, and Julie meet at the Bowling Alley to com- pete against other girls of their age. These inexperi- enced girls have done a very fine Job of represent- ing our School. The Mad Strikers, by name, have had first place several times throughout the year. The Scrubs, Larry, Mike, and Fred(not pictured), have done a good Job and had a lot of fun Bowling Wednesday nights. Duwavne is also a member of a team on this league.
