Sister Mary Laurette looks right at home when in front of the keyboard. When not teaching English 10, General Business, or Typing, Sister is either giving private piano lessons or rehearsing with one of the music groups. SISTER MARY AMADEUS, R.S.M. Geometry and Algebra II are the math classes taught this year by Sister Mary Amadeus. Sister also Instructs in French, Physics, and English 9, 11-12. SISTER MARY KATHLEEN ANNE. R.S.M-. Besides her many duties as principal of Assumption Academy, Sister Mary Kathleen Anne teaches World History, Speech Latin I, American Government, and Language Arts. While Sister Mary Kathleen spends most of her time instructing her own seventh and eighth graders, she does devote the first period in the afternoon to the high school Algebra I class. Classes At A A The Physics class attempts to find how the velocity of an accelerated body changes each second. MAY CROWNING Gayle Lessert and Karen Artzer were attendants to the Queen. Each girl and boy carried a few flowers which they presented to Mary as they knelt before her statue. The Student Body sang Queen of the Rosary after the crowning of the Blessed Virgin. Immediately preceding the five o'clock Mass on May 13 Fr. Edward FIInn crowned Kathy Wegner 1962 May Queen The Queen, In turn crowned Our Blessed Mother, and led the students In an Act of Consecration to Mary. Until the clock struck twelve on May 1962, Kathy Wegner reigned over the Cinderella Ball. Prank Thoendel was elected as her Prince Charming for the event. The royal couple were attended by Student Council officers Gayle Lessert and Bob Russell. Mike Earl, Mark Hooker, Larry Deans, and Larry Kelly do a fine Job of serving the banquet. The Wishing Well with Mary as its center was one of the main attractions of the Prom. Leading the traditional parade after the Crowning Ceremony were the King and Queen, Nick Schommer and Patti Petrlk, with their attendants, Sheila DeMilt and Joe Farrell, Connee Chaulk and Steve Ash. The cheerleaders, accompanying the royalty with a chorus of various chants, alumni and students followed In dscorfltcd csrs• The football players choose the Queen and her attendants by secret ballot Pep Club members select the King and co-captalns. The Feast of Christ the King Is celebrated annually at Assumption Academy by choosing a senior boy as King and a senior girl as his attendant. Joe Farrell was elected this year to crown the statue, and Ida Hostler was chosen as the crown bearer. The crowning preceded the blessing of the senior rings. Father Fllnn offi- ciated at both ceremonies which took place In the chapel of the Academy. )r. George Marti, who talked on the present conditions In Cuba. [ recent Cuban refugee, Dr. Marti Is now teaching classes at !STC. During his visit he emphasized the Importance of reii- ;lous freedom and urged the students not to take for granted ;he many blessings which they possess. Spiritual ODB FAITH and CUBA Activities The annual High School retreat was held Jan. 16-17-18. Father Pacificus Kenedy, a Franciscan Father from Denver, was the retreat master. There were three conferences held In the chapel with Intervals of pri- vate prayer and meditation. Among them were Country Lane , Praise Ye the Lord , Ole Ark’s A Moverln , and Let There Be Music . Besides singing these and various seasonal songs and per- forming In several programs, the group competed against other schools In the District Contest. The Beauty of the Earth , Blue Moon , and I Hear America Singing were three of the favorite songs which the Sextet practiced every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:30 p.m. BOYS’ GLEE CLUB During the regular Tuesday and Thursday practices this year, the Boys' Glee has specialized In American Folk Songs. Among the Negro Spirituals which the boys have sung are: De Gospel Train and Little David Play on Your Horn, The Mixed Chorus under the direction of Sister Mary Laurette practiced weekly on Kentucky Babe and other Negro spirituals by Stephen Foster. This group of girls had the Drivllege of singing in the Schola Cantorum, Propers of the Mass. The regular Mon- day and Wednesday night practices brought satisfying results on Were You There? rhe Freshmen Ensemble program has been Dade up of Religious songs, featuring The Lord Is My Shepherd. Three Little Maids —this is not the ltle of the group but of the cute irrangement they have worked on hroughout the year. Every Thursday light the girls also practiced Hi, Ho, iing Gaily. This group has spent Its regular Tues- day and Thursday practices on Ave Marla and Serenade From A Student Prince. The Citizenship Committee Is sponsored by Mr. Whiting. The members are re- sponsible for the honor assemblies which are held at the end of every nine weeks. At the assemblies Mr. Whiting presents the first, second and third honor ribbons. These ribbons are made by the members. The Citizenship Committee also sponsored various activities throughtout the year. Although she is kept very busy teaching first and second grades, Sister Mary Priscilla generously acts as sponsor of the Publicity Committee. This organiza- tion keeps the bulletin boards up to date and submits the latest news to the paper In order to make our school better known. In addition, the members make posters for the many activities that arise during the school year. Meeting on Thursday afternoon each week are Mary Jo Arthur, MaDonna Connelly,Corlnne Martin, Rosalene Paulk and Jean Lemmon. MS £ M £ L On February 22 Mark Hooker served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Patriotic Program given by the tenth grade class. Sr. M. Laurette directs the Glee Club In the final number. Literature Interprets Life was the theme of the literary program planned by these five girls for February, Catholic Press Month. Every nine weeks an Honor Assembly is held at which the awards are presented by Father Flinn. Janice and Colleen re- ceived their ribbons. As part of the program to commemorate Mercy Day, the Speech Class produced and presented a one-act play, Devils or Angels. The Betty Crocker Homemaker Award of 1963 was won by Connee Chaulk. Bob Boeck, Connie Lynn, Don Marchant and Kathy Schommer were chosen to represent our school at the Girls and Boys State contest. Assumption had the edge In passing yards with 497 to 349 against the opposition. The Panthers rushed for a total cf l,u85 yards In eight games compared to 1,017 for the opponents. The Panther team hit on 27 of 71 passes. A dozen enemy aerials were picked off by the Panthers. This was the second season under Coach Larry Whiting who now possesses a 9-7-0- record In his two seasons.
