Sum- mertime is over and we re back in school—again. A new year is ahead of us full of opportunities and happenings. We prepare ourselves for days of work play, hardships friendships, good times bad. The HORNET staff hopes that we've successfully captured a few of these moments for you. Aspermont Independent School District Mr. L. R. Dunn Superintendent Another school year has vanished only to appear again as another page in history. It has been a pleasure serving as your superintendent. I sincerely thank each of you: students, teachers, staff and patrons for your cooperation in making this a successful school year. Commendations are in order to the annual staff and sponsor for producing an excellent publication. I am sure this yearbook will hold many memories which will become more cherished in years to come. Students, take time to think seriously about your future. Also think seriously about your ability to learn while the op- portunity for learning is at hand. What is more needed for learning is a proper attitude and a humble mind. A wise man will hear and will increase in learning. As a saying goes, “Small minds dwell on ideas.” Think about the kind of mind you would like to develop. As you progress toward maturity, learn to take advantage of the opportunities afforded you in order that your life may be more abundant. '1 Best Wishes in the Future' ’ L. R. Dunn 2 Mr. Frank Dawson High School Principal TO THE STUDENTS OF ASPERMONT HIGH SCHOOL It is my wish to you: that you flourish and prosper. Let your education help you to flourish and to be your guide to prosperity. Throughout life let treating others as you would want them to treat you also be your guide in beginning a new era for human relations. Just imagine what would happen if everyone was to try to treat those around themselves with justness, loyalty, good sportsmanship, fairness, honesty, kindness, considera- tion, compassion, self-control, tolerance, forgiveness, benevolence, belief, respect, politeness, dignity, admira- tion, friendliness, love, and did it with integrity? Aside from personal benefit, one can take a hand, no mat- ter how small, in beginning a new era for human relations. The pebble, dropped in a pool, can make ripples to the fur- thest shore. FLOURISH: To be in a state of activity and production; ex- panding in influence; thriving; visibly doing well. PROSPER: To achieve economic success; succeeding at what one does. Dunn, Mr. Dawson, Mr. Long, Coach Stewart, Members of the loard, teachers, fellow classmates, family and friends. I stand before you as the valedictorian of the class of 1987. It is with lixed feelings of pride, relief, sadness, and anxiousness that I ad- ress you tonight. Pride in the accomplishments of my high school ears, relief in the completion of my education, sadness in the eparation of our class, and anxiousness toward a future of which 3w are certain. I would like to share with you what has been my inspiration iroughout high school. Matthew 5:48 says Be ye perfect, just as our Father in heaven is perfect.” As I strive toward this goal, the lings I have learned I would like to express in a poem I have written ailed “The Road to Success.” he road to success is narrow and straight Vhile the road to failure is twisted with fate ou can be the one in control on the straight and narrow r let fate dominate you helpless as a sparrow ligh school years are filled with pressure, especially the twelfth lut the secret in life is to be true to yourself Persistence is the key that unlocks the door to your goal While inconsistency in life will always take its toll Making decisions with maturity to accept the consequences Should always be made in the best judgment of our senses The road to success has led to our mighty nation Of which our forefather's faith in God laid the foundation We must never forget that the freedom upon which this country is built Was given by men who laid down their lives without guilt They gave you the freedom of choice So determination of your destiny is your voice This is the freedom to succeed as well as fail Because growth comes with the sunlight just as in the stormy gale The time has come to be on your own To leave the security of friends and school you have known So which will you now choose? Your responsibilities? Add to America’s problems or its possibilities? Some study the road to success by theory and thesis I know the road to success is simply Jesus Ike Mitchell Salutatorian—94.90 Ike Salutatorian Speech Mr. Dunn, Members of the Board, Friends, Relatives and Parents, the graduating class of 87 welcomes you. We have waited twelve long years for this night; sometimes with anxiety, sometimes with happiness and sometimes with a feeling of dread. We realize graduation means many changes in our lives. As young adults, we will be making many plans and decisions about our future. We will have new respon- sibilities and consequences alike to accept. As we set our goals, we will always remember those responsible for molding us into the in- dividuals we are today. From our teachers, we have learned to always give our best to every challenge, stand up for what we believe in, and never settle for less than the best we can be. With our friends, we have shared a little laughter and friendships that have lasted through the years. Our parents have been the most significant influence in our lives. They have given us love, care, and support. They have challenged us to achieve the highest we can, to use our abilities to be the best we can, and to believe in ourselves and not compromise our ideals. As we leave here tonight, may be never lose sight of our goals, may we have the courage to carry through with our ideals, and may we have the wisdom to realize that we will never be too old to learn. Those who would have a great school would be great citizens. They must assume their share of respon- sibility as well as take advan- tage of opportunities. It is our desire for Aspermont Elemen- tary School students to become noted for their outstanding scholastic achievements as well as for their school spirit and loyalty. The philosophy of Aspermont Elementary School, as a basic principle, is the recognition of the worth of each individual to become a worthy citizen in the future society. It attempts to attain this goal by providing experiences for the three-fold development of hand, head, and heart of those students who enter it. It is our desire than an attitude of accomplishment and spirit of happiness may prevail. It is our hope that all of those who par- ticipate in school activities of any type will have experiences which will enable them not only to further their educational opportunities, but also to live a more balanced daily life in a demanding society. Good luck and God bless and keep each and everyone of you.
