School History .. IN STONEWALL COUNTY Mrs. T. R. Duke taught the first school in 1888-1887, in the Hodges neigh- borhood- This was originally The place laid off for the town—it is about five miles south of where Aspermont is now situated. Ab- out three years later Sid Davis taught the first school where As- permont is now located. By 1900 there were many community schools. In 1909 a two-story school building (more commonly remembered as “the Alamo” be- cause its structure resembled the famous Alamo mission in Texas) was erected at a cost of $12,000.00 which was a credit to the town. A red brick building was built about 1924. In 1930 our present Hmh School building and gymnasium was built—the architect was S. B. Haynes and general contractor was H- H. Shadle. At the time Miss Etta Roebuck was Supt. of schools and the board was com- prised of: H. W. Anderson, pres- ident; J. W. Joyce, secretary, C. G- Viertel, A. B. Ellison, J. S. Har- ey, A. C. Hecht, and L. H. Boyd. In 1940 and ‘41 the “Alamo was torn down it had been con- demned for several years, and two l'ock buildings were constructed and a garage for the school buses. One building was for the primary grades—the other to be used as a band room, agriculture and foot- ball wash room-. About this time the campus was also improved with gravel roads, lawns, and a football field. Mr. A. L. Acker is present Supt preceded by G. D. Railsback and Miss Etta Roebuck.
