Ab- out three years later Sid Davis taught the first school where As- permont is now located. By 1900 there were many community schools. In 1909 a two-story school building (more commonly remembered as “the Alamo” be- cause its structure resembled the famous Alamo mission in Texas) was erected at a cost of $12,000.00 which was a credit to the town. A red brick building was built about 1924. In 1930 our present Hmh School building and gymnasium was built—the architect was S. B. Haynes and general contractor was H- H. Shadle. At the time Miss Etta Roebuck was Supt. of schools and the board was com- prised of: H. W. Anderson, pres- ident; J. W. Joyce, secretary, C. G- Viertel, A. B. Ellison, J. S. Har- ey, A. C. Hecht, and L. H. Boyd. In 1940 and ‘41 the “Alamo was torn down it had been con- demned for several years, and two l'ock buildings were constructed and a garage for the school buses. He lettered in football and basketball in col- lege and was a good man for the job of coa- ching the Hornet Basketball team. If you looked on the side line during the game you could see Marion puffing nervously on a cig- arette amid a. sea of cigarette butts. Mr. Heald was greatly liked by the boys, and, if his wife doesn’t mind,, the girls too. HORENT BASKETBALL LETTER MEN HU LON (Baby) JACKSON was one of the best when it came to putting them in the basket. At one tournament at Paducah he made sixty two points by himself and our opponents together made only sixty eight. lie almost beat them by himself. He usually made more points than all the rest of the team. RAY HAYS. Hays was a very tall boy who was an excellent shot from center. Ray usually came up at the last of the came with one of those long shots and was r'-ally a life saver. One of his spcialities was gal- loping from one end of the court to the other and then laying it in the basket for the boys from the center. Ray was also our Cap- tain and a good one. BOB WARD. Ward was one of our most modest boys and a humdinger of a forward who put them in the basket from the side of the court. He was the best one handed shot on the court. Bob could also play guard as well as forward, and his only fault was wanting to play at Peacock too RAY MITCHELL was a forward wi h plenty of spring and jump. Ray excelled in those jumps and really put them in the bas- ket, he also served as a guard. He could use his feet as well as his hands to guard JIM BRADSHAW (Poncho) was ano- ther tall basketball player. Poncho would stick his big hands and long arms in the op- ponent’s face, and if that did not stop him, nothing could. He was tall enough to reach the basket without leaving the floor,, but be- cause of his guard position he seldom shot. BOB PEARSON was a short, fast man and a good player. He saved a Peacock game for us by putting us ahead two points, Bob may not be very large but he was worth ev- ery pound of himself on the court.'He,, like Mitchell used the jump shot. DONALD LOTT was one of those play- ers who does not wait for some one to tell him what to do. but went in there and did it himself Donald was noted for his crazy shots He could get into the most akward po- sitions to shoot a ball that you ever saw. If he hit the goal (and he did often) it sur- prized him. HOWARD CADDELL was one of our most regular players and came out every day. Howard was a substitute forward and some other positions as well. JAMES SPRINGER was both manag- er and player. Although James had had a leg broken in football season he participated in all the practices and played some. As a manager and a player he was ok.
