1956 Football Lack of depth, injuries to key players, and disap- pointments at key positions were causes of the Panth- ers' 1-8 record for the 1956 season, commented Coach Robert Bieber, who is looking forward to next year's team as he will have 10 retuming lettermen. The 1956 team, formed around a nucleus of six retuming lettennen, Jim Boot, Steve Candela, Dick Fassett, Gordon McBride, Dominic Volpone, was led by Captain Bob Gilchrist. In the preview game at Fairport, Sept. 7, the Panthers battled Riverside to a 6-6 tie. In the first regular game of the season, played at Bula Field on Sept. 14, the Conneaut Trojans out- played the Panthers in the second half to win 33-O. Conneaut went on, through the season, undefeated. On Sept. 21, the Panthers were blanked again, 33-O, this time by the Painesville Harvey Red Raid- ers who went on to an 8-1 season and the NEC championship. The Panthers travelled to Euclid Sept. 28, seeking a win over the Panthers of Euclid as they had done the previous year. A fired-up Euclid team suppressed 1956 FOOTBALL TEAM FIRST ROW: Jim Spellman. Bill the Bulans under an avalanche of touchdowns and defeated them 61- -0. On Oct. 5. again on the road, Bula received a 13---O setback at the hands of the Geneva Eagles in a close one. A pass from Ed Limbach to Bob Gilchrist, a 20- yd. run by Ted Osowski, and a 2-yd. plunge by Ozzie Eberle scored Bula's first touchdown of the season as they were defeated 19- -6 hy Fairport on Oct. 12. Bula's Htst win of the year, on Oct. 19, came against NVicklille as Ozzie Eberle and Harley Kan- anen scored on runs of 2 and 32 yds., respectively. On Homecoming night Oct. 26, the Panthers were overpowered 34 -7 by Mentor. A 35-yd. pass from Ed Limhach to Steve Candela. and Ozzie Eberle's extra point scored the Panther's points. Painesville Riverside upset the Panthers at Paines- ville, 12- -6 in the closing seconds as the Beavers celebrated their Homecoming night Nov. 1. Gordon McBridtr scored Bula's lone tally.
