The ship was launched at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Sparrows Point, Maryland on 22 May 1943 and spon- sored by Mrs. Bernice Berle, the wife of Adolph Berle, the Assistant Secretary of State from 1938 to 1944. ASHTABULA, affectionately known as the Flying A or BULA , was commissioned on 7 August, 1943, and assigned to the Pacific Fleet. The old ASHTABULA plied the waters of the Pacific for over a quarter of a century, winning fifteen battle ribbons in World War Il, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam hostilites. A highlight of her World War II service occurred during the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. The ship was torpedoed, and miraculously no personnel were injured or fires resulted. Despite a hole 34' by 24' in her port side, through superb damage control efforts, ASHTABULA corrected a 14 degree list and continued operations, and the very next morning shot down an enemy plane returning for the kill . The old ASHTABULA became the new ASHTABULA in her second quarter century of service as the first and only ship of her type in the Pacific Fleet. During conversion in March 1968, a 400 foot mid- section, built entirely new from keel to radar antenna, was inserted and welded between the original bow and original stern, replacing the old 310' mid-section. The liquid cargo capacity was increased by over one-third, the capability to carry dry!frozenfship's store provisions and ammunition was added, and four Fast Automatic Shut- tle Transfer QFASTJ replenishment-at-sea stations were installed. These and other features make ASHTABULA a virtually new ship, with a configuration closely similar to the new AOR'S lReplenishment Oileri. ASHTABULA deployed to WESTPAC at 1000 On the 6th Of November. With the exception of two days of heavy seas, the trip was extremely smooth. Thanksgiving was spent at sea and the traditional turkey dinner was served. The transit terminated in Subic Bay on the 26th of November. The first line swing was a busy one, a total of 24 days on Market Time operations followed by Yankee Station, then to Subic. On the way to Subic, a surprise UNREP was conducted with USS ISBELL, delivering fuel and mail on Christmas Day. New Year's Day was a spectacular one in Subic Bay. The second line swing began the following day' iwith transiti for Market Time operations, then to Task Force 74.special operations in the Indian Ocean as part of Task Force 74 and on return Market Time and Yankee Station operations were resumed. X On the 5th of February after a 34 day. second line swing ASHTABULA returned to Su bic for a two week upkeep period. Upon completion of the upkeep period the ship returned to Market Time operations. During this period RADM P. P., COLE COMSERVGRU THREEXCTF 73 and party embarked on 25 February at Vung Tau for a two day visit. RADM COLE and party disembarked on 27 February on Yankee Station. On 28 February ASHTABULA changed course in the direction of Singapore fthe next R8tR porti, with an equator crossing on the 3rd of March. On 9 March we sadly departed the harbor of Singapore. Singapore is a beautiful city and is becoming a very modern city, and is one of the cleanest cities we visited. On this date we again headed for market time operations for a few unreps, then it was back to Subic Bay for fresh stores and more fuel and ordnance. On Wednesday 22 March, we set sail for Hong Kong for a much deserved R8tR period. We arrived on Friday the 24th, for 5 days of relaxation. On Thursday the 30th of March we again departed another port. We started working as soon as he cleared the har- bor-we unreped the USS CHICAGO CCG 11i, and USS WADDELL iDDG 113 and then just for practice we did a few amphibious ships. Little to our knowledge did we know that North Vietnam was starting her offensive on that date and that would later affect our destiny. On Saturday April 1, we were already feeling the effects of the offensive and this was no April fool's joke! From the dates of 20 April until the 30th of April the BULA saw a total of 47 customers, then from May 1st until 11 May the flying A saw 51 ships approach and depart our sides. Towards the month of june rumors had it we would be departing and heading home, alas they were false. june was again another month of many customers all thirsty for our fuel and hungry for our stores and in need of our bombs. The month of luly picked up our spirits-we still had our un- reps-but we now had a date that we would be arriving back in Long Beach. On Saturday night, 29 july, at approximately 24 minutes after 8 o'clock we finished our last unrep, the USS KITTY HAWK KCVA 631. lt was a joyous time for all of us aboard the ASHTABULA. We arrived in Subic on August 1st, for a brief off-load period. On Friday the 4th of August we departed Subic Bay for the last time of this deployment-our next stop, Yokosuka japan for a brief stop in order to pick up merchandize ordered through the exchange. We departed Yoko on the 12th, enroute Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S. of A. for a two day stop over-for our custom check. On Wednesday 23 August we departed Pearl Harbor for our last 2,216 mile trip to Long Beach, California. Arriving on Wednesday 30 August at 9:30 A.M. After completing three semesters at Swarthmore College and flight training, he was commissioned Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator in 1946. Following' Fighter Operational Training in F6F Hellcats at NAS Banana River, Florida, Know Cape Kennedyl he was assigned to his first fleet squadron-Fighting Bom- bing Four-homeported at NAS North Island. During his seven year tour with this squadron iwhich was later redesignated Fighter Squadron ZA and Fighter Squadron 123 he flew the F4U Corsair, the F8F Bearcat and the F2H Banshee, deployed aboard aircraft carriers to the 6th and 7th Fleets and changed homeports with his squadron from San Diego to jacksonville. He then performed a three year tour at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania as Fighter Training Officer and F9F-6 Cougar instructor for six Reserve Fighter Squadrons. On completion of shore duty, Captain MC CONNELL was ordered back to sea in the Heavy Attack Program in Heavy Attack Squadron Eight homeported at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. As a member of this squadron from 1957 to 1962 he flew the A3 Skywarrior, deploying three times to the 7th Fleet on aircraft carriers. In March of 1962 he was ordered to the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California where he completed the Five Term Program and General Line School and was awarded the B.A. in Political Science in 1964. His next tour was as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two, homeported at Rota, Spain again flying the A3 Sky-warrior and deploying aboard 6th Fleet aircraft carriers. He then attended the Naval War College at Newport, R. I. where he participated concurrently in the Warfare course and the George Washington extension program. Upon graduation he received the Certificate of Completion and also a Masters Degree in International Affairs. Following this tour he was Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier, RANGER, in 1967 and 1968, deploying to the Tonkin Gulf in support of the Vietnam effort. Captain MC CONNELL reports to ASHTABULA from GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba where he served as Training Officer in the Fleet Training Group for two years. Captain MC CONNELL is married to the former Miss Elaine Proc- tor of Somerville, NJ. They are the parents of three daughters, Sally, 14 and twins, lill and Lee, 10. ill l I FRUM THE CAPTAIN T fl - .-.NH W--,Z This book is intended to portray a crossection history of ASHTABULA's ten month odyssey in the western pacific. Deployments mean different things to different people. To many sailors only recently in the NAVY, the cruise is an adventure, a chance to see the world of recruiting poster fame. To others it is a drag, an unwelcome separation from loved ones. For a few, such as our Philip- pino personnel, it means a reunion with family and friends. For all, it means a lot of hard work often performed under grueling conditions. And, for all, it is a matter of personal satisfaction to have completed it successfully. My sincere congratulations to the crew for doing a great job, both at work and play. Special kudos also to the Cruise Book Committee for their good work in capturing and documenting the sounds, sights and significance of WESTPAC 71-72. ff j. H. McConnell THE X.0. Lcur. The Signalmen also help the officer of the deck identifying vessels sailing on the high seas. ET'S AND RD'S fl I 5 EEL J EEE! Ol .x xg M Y-fx ,. - . ETR3 HOLMES, PN3 HERNANDEZ and ENS ITTELSON headed the fund raising committee Men of UBULAH, the best multi-product unrep ship in WestPac, have spent eight months in WestPac on an extended deployment and have adopted Subic as their homeport away from our true homeport of Long Beach. The crew hopes to visit with the two students they helped attend high school when the EASHTABULA returns to WestPac after a well earned stay in the States. Prior to our departure last November the ASHTABULA purchased a small St. Bernard puppy. While enroute to Westpac the ship decided our pup- py should have a name-so a con- test was set up by the crew. The name that won was Brother Sebas- tian Coventry . Sebastian, as he is called, became part of the crew, par- ticipating in unreps, and even witnessing GMGC Stone re- enlisting. He may be found, at any given time, anywhere aboard the ship. He, however, prefers the air- conditioned spaces to take his nooners , which he is so Well noted for. sl. 1 Z gnu-JL.. .., 5 -1 Q? ASHTABULA'S outchop from TG 73.5 marks the departure of an exceptional- ly hard-working and versatile performer. I wish to commend you on your outstanding performance this deployment. Without exception you met each commitment in a highly skillful and professional manner. Though the com- petition from the new multiproducts was tough. The flying A's reputation for experience and dependability insured her of a hearty welcome from all units serviced. 2. Please extend my appreciation and a well done to all your officers and men. May your homeward journey be downhill with speed brakes in. F. B. Bromley 1. As you proceed home after being extended for more than three months in the Western Pacific, the officers and men of USS ASHTABULA can take deep pride in their important contributions to the prosecution of the war. Although your extension in the combat zone has caused hardships on your officers and men and their families and loved ones, ASHTABULA'S operations in the seventh fleet have led to .inflicting serious damage on the enemy and saving countless friendly lives. l am aware of the extremely high tempo of operations you have sustained and the sacrifices made by your crew throughout this deployment, and I want every officer and enlisted man aboard to know that ASHTABULA'S fine work has been recognized and appreciated. Well done Admiral B. A. Clarey, USN, Com- mander in Chief, U. S. Pacflt As ASHTABULA completes an extended nine month deployment with the seventhflt service force, I take this final opportunity to commend your of- ficers and men for a job well done. The flying A met all commitments in an extremely professional manner, including the noteworthy transfer through underway replenishment of almost eighteen thousand short tons of am- munition. Your presence was never more important than during the TF 74 contingency ops when you single-handedly, shouldered the burden in the Gulf of Tonkin. In these and many other instances, the ASHTABULA sailors performed with great dedication thereby making a significant contribution to our Navy's mission in Southeast Asia. As you head for home waters, I extend my sincere appreciation to each ASHTABULA man and best wishes for a quick and joyous homecoming. RADM P. P.
