DEDICATION The students of Frank L.- Ashley High School have been privileged to know E. J. Phillips as a man for whom we have had the utmost respect and as a coun- selor and friend. He has always been ready to help us with our problems, encouraging us so that we could find solutions when our problems, sometimes, seemed to have no answers. He has helped us to understand the value of learning to choose wisely, and made us realize that to be ready for the future we must be prepared. Mr. Phillips came to Gastonia in September, 1949, to teach biology in this school, after having taught one year in Draper, North Carolina. In 1955 he became assistant principal and has held this position since that time. He is a native of Andrews, North Carolina. He was graduated from Western Carolina College at Cullowhee, North Carolina, with a B.S. Degree, later attending graduate school at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received Masters Degrees in Administration, Biology, and Physical Ed- ucation. Mr. Phillips is married to the former Mary Alice Cowan of Cullowhee. Mrs. Phillips, also, taught in Frank L. Ashley High School for several years. They have one son, Ernest Jake Phillips, II] (Jakie), who is a student at Grier High School. The Phillipses are members of First Methodist Church in Gastonia. The students of Frank L. Ashley High School re- spectfully dedicate our yearbook, 1964 SpznNER, to Ernest Jake Phillips, Jr., leader, counselor, and friend.
