Slowly it begins to gather force and momentum. It finds strength in the depths and yet only skims the surface of the sea that is understanding, knowledge, responsibility, and peace. For some of us, our waves are beyond the horizon; for others, our waves have evested— but soon mighty currents will form again to carry us to even greater heights. Ashley High School is many things—classes, clubs, assembly programs, football, basketball, baseball, music, dances, a hootenanny, learning, serving, growing—all making up a spirit, a personality, a way of life which the 1964 Spinner staff has chosen to call “Waves of Green.” Page Four -¢ | 4 bs ate ta i ‘ i 3 | TALL HHL Lee E ES 20° CANDY 5° PS 10° OATMEAL PIES 5° CHEWING GUM 5° 10° MILK 3 cram exams, studtes, buddies, white and green, a beauty queen Page Seven Things to do, A project due; Assembly show, All must go; Book rental fee, An afternoon tea; English themes, Dramatic screams; _ Basketball schemes, Promising teams; Teacher's mood, Lunchroom food; Who will recall The thrill of it all? J. Phillips as a man for whom we have had the utmost respect and as a coun- selor and friend. He has always been ready to help us with our problems, encouraging us so that we could find solutions when our problems, sometimes, seemed to have no answers. He has helped us to understand the value of learning to choose wisely, and made us realize that to be ready for the future we must be prepared. Mr. Phillips came to Gastonia in September, 1949, to teach biology in this school, after having taught one year in Draper, North Carolina. In 1955 he became assistant principal and has held this position since that time. He is a native of Andrews, North Carolina. He was graduated from Western Carolina College at Cullowhee, North Carolina, with a B.S. Degree, later attending graduate school at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received Masters Degrees in Administration, Biology, and Physical Ed- ucation. Mr. Phillips is married to the former Mary Alice Cowan of Cullowhee. Mrs. Phillips, also, taught in Frank L. Ashley High School for several years. They have one son, Ernest Jake Phillips, II] (Jakie), who is a student at Grier High School. The Phillipses are members of First Methodist Church in Gastonia. The students of Frank L. Ashley High School re- spectfully dedicate our yearbook, 1964 SpznNER, to Ernest Jake Phillips, Jr., leader, counselor, and friend. DR. WOODROW B. SUGG Dr. Sugg has served as Superintendent of the Gastonia City Schools for six years. After graduating from Edge- comb County High School, he attended Atlantic Chris- tian College where he received his A.B. degree. Dr. Sugg earned his M.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida. He was at one time principal of Arlington Junior High School; he also served as supervisor for the Gastonia City Schools. Dr. Sugg is a member of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the Board of Stewards of the First Methodist Church. Administrative leaders guide and direct Page Sixteen DR. RANDOLPH E. He previously served as principal of the high school in Gaffney, South Carolina. Dr. Carothers came to Gastonia as assistant principal in 1954. He is a member of the Rotary Club and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoys spending much time at his river cabin with his wife and ten-year-old son, Randy. There are six service clubs, in addition to these councils, to maintain emphasis on the Honor System and the Monitorial System. Ashley, has three publications, Fine Yarns, the Rhetor, and the Spinner. Vocal and instrumental students develop their talents in the mixed chorus and the band. Interest clubs are organized for the personal benefit and enjoyment of students. Extracurricular activities are regulated by the ten-point system. Paul Short presides at assembly program. All student activities are led by the Student Council, which is represented by the heads of the three classes. The goal of the Student Council—to augment the social and academic growth of the students—has been success- fully carried out. To familiarize the sophomores with the customs and regulations of Ashley, the Student Council conducts orientation. A very successful cam- paign, “Kans for Kids,” was carried out during Christ- mas season. The three classes competed for the prized golden can which the seniors won. The proceeds were donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to needy families. In honor of the Ashley faculty, the Student Council sponsored Teacher Appreciation Day on Feb- ruary 7. The monitorial body is made up of monitors and the Monitorial Council. Two monitors are elected yearly from each homeroom. The chief monitor and the assistant chiefs are elected by the monitors. Mem- bers of the monitorial body must maintain high averages, both in citizenship and scholarship. Monitors regulate hall traffic, help to enforce and uphold the rules, regu- lations, and traditions of the school.
