FOREWORD The Spinner Staff of 1958 asks you to consider the words of Thomas Henry Huxley in his essay on A Liberal Education: “The Chess board is the world— the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance. The game of life is like unto the art of playing chess. T is so you ' ll find, when we compare the two at A.H.S. The board of chess is quite complex; yet, too, is this old world In which we all must venture ere the future doth unfurl. The present finds us on one block— our designated check— Tho ' we occupy alone, we re part of an eternal sect. And when we stop and look behind, we see the past unfold; Unique and binding patterns form: each man makes up the whole. Our Knights ride forth and challenge others in the field of sports; Our Kings and Queens, too, merit fame in far and distant courts. And those who lead and guide our steps in every move we make— Our Bishops, Pawns, and Rooks— all teach the course we are to take. So if we all contribute of ourselves and of our time, We may not win the Game, but we’ll have seen the goal sublime. Joan Hahn Judy Jackson
