In the stretch drive of the last six games, the Wave lost four games by a total of seven points— a one point loss each to Reynolds and to Greensboro, a two point loss to High Point, and a three pointer to Burlington. Five of Gastonia’s seven league losses have been decided by four points or less, with a list of the heartbreakers reading like this: Two losses by one point to Winston-Salem, 46-45, and to Greensboro, 54-53. T B A L L A two-point loss to High Point, 50-48. in overtime. A three-point defeat in overtime to Burlington, 51-48. A four-point loss in overtime to Burlington, 54-50. Add these losses and you get five Conference defeats by the grand total of eleven points. It is also significant that the five close losses were to the four tournament teams from the Western AAA. Just a dozen points spread over five games would have given the Green Wave a tourney berth and the possibility of a state title. Johnny White, guard for the Green Wave, was selected for the All-State Basketball Team.
