8 ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF ASHLEY HIGH SCHOOL GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA BONNIE FRANK NORRIS, III, EDITOR SAMUEL PHILLIP JACKSON, MANAGER FOREWORD The Spinner Staff of 1958 asks you to consider the words of Thomas Henry Huxley in his essay on A Liberal Education: “The Chess board is the world— the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance. The game of life is like unto the art of playing chess. T is so you ' ll find, when we compare the two at A.H.S. The board of chess is quite complex; yet, too, is this old world In which we all must venture ere the future doth unfurl. The present finds us on one block— our designated check— Tho ' we occupy alone, we re part of an eternal sect. And when we stop and look behind, we see the past unfold; Unique and binding patterns form: each man makes up the whole. Our Knights ride forth and challenge others in the field of sports; Our Kings and Queens, too, merit fame in far and distant courts. And those who lead and guide our steps in every move we make— Our Bishops, Pawns, and Rooks— all teach the course we are to take. So if we all contribute of ourselves and of our time, We may not win the Game, but we’ll have seen the goal sublime. Joan Hahn Judy Jackson ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS WE HONOR . . All of our winners— winners in the classrooms— on the athletic held —on the stage— in the contests— in the moment by moment right choices. As in Chess, no quality is more important than the one defined as ' grace under pressure.” To win brilliantly in an obviously superior position is no great feat. But to rise to the heights from a difficult position— that is the mark of a winner. I he art of winning is onlv attained when the person has fully acknowledged that the player on the other side never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance.” A superior force— whatever its nature may be— is unimportant if it is rendered impotent by the opponent’s superior strategy. Ashley Senior High has produced many winners in the past. It is our firm belief that we have many winners in our present student body. To you, the Class of 1958 confidently dedicates this volume of The Spinner. Page Eight 5 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Randolph E. Carothers Principal Mr. Ernest J. Phillips, }r. Through the medium of the Student Council, the homerooms and the class organizations are coordinated into a program of student initiative and student leader- ship. Four major committees function under the Student Council. The Customs Committee acts in a leadership capacity for the promotion of an Honor System in Ashley High. They strive to keep before the students the high standards of scholarship and extracurricular achievements which have become traditional with the school. The Student Center Committee attempts to lead the student body to accept its responsibility for the gov- ernment within the Center. The Building and Grounds Committees promote student pride in the appearance of Ashley Senior High School. We the students of Ashley High School believe that the following ideals should be upheld and maintained as a part of the educational program of each person in the student body. 1. High school is an institution of learning and a place for young people to train for a better way of living. 2. The Honor System should be the basis of all con- duct. Every effort should be given to the develop- ment of good citizenship based upon personal honor. 3. The school is widely known because of the things for which it has stood and for which it stands. The lives that we lead in school and out, as well as adults, speak loudly as to the school’s worth.” HOMEROOM PRESIDENTS William Rogers Bradley William Lewis Craig, Jr. Bobby Lee Dellinger Susan Lenora Froneberger Joan Hannah Kirby Bonni e Frank Norris, III Sanford Ralph Smith Larry Milton Stacey James Lester Summey Marvin Coleman Beasley Judy Rebecca Bisanar Frances Victoria Calvert Jake Lander Gray, III Joseph Wallace Hanes Lloyd Hubert Lancaster George Woodley Lingle, Jr. Harry M. Through the years a high standard has been set for conduct in the corridors, in the cafeteria, on the campus, and at all athletic events. Ashley Senior High has been known throughout the state and the entire Southeast for this success in student leadership. The adopted code for school citizen- ship is: “We will never bring disgrace on this, our school, by any act of dishonesty or discourtesy. “We will uphold the ideals and traditions of our school, both singly and together, trying always to encourage others to respect our standards and the physical structure of our school. “We will revere and obey the school’s customs and do our best to incite a like respect in others. “We will strive unceasingly to quicken our sense of honor and to develop pride in student participation and leadership. “In all these ways we will transmit this school greater, better, and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.” The monitorial body is made up of elected representatives from each homeroom. The Monitorial Council is the executive organization for the body of monitors. Through the functioning of these two groups, more than thirteeen hundred students are integrated into an earnest and cooperative program of citizenship. LETTERMEN’S CLUB Each member of the Lettermen’s Club has earned a “G” by participation in Varsity sports or by being manager for a varsity team. It is the purpose of the club to serve the school in a greater capacity by being leaders for: 1. Clean sportsmanship in all competitive sports. 2. Maximum participation in all forms of athletics by the young men of Ashley Senior High. 3. Administration of the stadium and gymnasium during all home games. Members of the Lettermen’s Club are eligible for the following awards which are made each year: The E. R. Morgan Award for best football player The A. B. Carter Award for most valuable football player. James Mullen Award for best football blocker. Bill Uren Award for the outstanding three-letter player. Dr. John Bond Award for most valuable baseball player. Mr. Ches Freeman Award for most outstanding basketball player. Mr. Paul White Award for most valuable track man. In the stretch drive of the last six games, the Wave lost four games by a total of seven points— a one point loss each to Reynolds and to Greensboro, a two point loss to High Point, and a three pointer to Burlington. Five of Gastonia’s seven league losses have been decided by four points or less, with a list of the heartbreakers reading like this: Two losses by one point to Winston-Salem, 46-45, and to Greensboro, 54-53. T B A L L A two-point loss to High Point, 50-48. in overtime. A three-point defeat in overtime to Burlington, 51-48. A four-point loss in overtime to Burlington, 54-50. Add these losses and you get five Conference defeats by the grand total of eleven points. It is also significant that the five close losses were to the four tournament teams from the Western AAA. Just a dozen points spread over five games would have given the Green Wave a tourney berth and the possibility of a state title. Johnny White, guard for the Green Wave, was selected for the All-State Basketball Team.
