BASKETBALL Although the Ashley Quintet failed to qualify for the State Basketball Tournament, they es- tablished an enviable record. There were three Senior players on the 1957 team. Two varsity players and sixteen squad members will form the nucleus for strong 1958 and 1959 teams. Gastonia definitely expects to win the State Championship in 1959. The squad players proved to be very promising— their perform ance in this year’s games was brilliant. The Sophomore players were the best that Ashley Senior High has had since the years of Kelton, Hoffman, and Lindsay. The Green Wave was defeated twice only by Salisbury and Greens boro, the two top ranking teams. In no game did Gastonia fail to give the opposition a tull dose of competition. 1 hey merited the confi dence which followed them through the last game. The margin of losing points for the season just averaged four points per game. Hre Green Wave defeated their traditional rival, Charlotte Central, in both conference games. Jimmy Summey, forward, was voted an all-Conference player. Summey and Del- linger were high scorers for the season. This is the Way to become state champions in 1959.
