On the East side of this intersection is our High School— on the West is the Lutheran Church and the home of Mr. Lawrence Wyss. One of our favorite teachers used to stand at his classroom window and look thoughtfully upon this scene. Then he would turn and say, Class, this is why you are seeking to get an education— to go from Ashley High into your home and into your church. Success in life will be measured by the quality of your membership in these two insti- tutions. I am little concerned about what your income bracket is going to be twenty years from now— but I am deeply interested in what your spiritual development will he and what your home relationships are. I he Spinner Staff of 1957 sincerely dedicates the yearbook to this philosophy of teaching and of learning. CuVnjUrJiAAXxdLLov . Student organizations and extra-curriculai activities exist to give individuals the opportunity for this growth. In 1952 the Student Council was organized under the New Constitution for the student body. The Council has given opportunity for the development of student leadership and of student expression. The basic purpose of this class is to learn the fundamentals of good journalism and to publish our school newspaper, Fine Yarns. i m j f p- ® MONITORIAL COUNCIL Ronald Smith Chief Ashley Senior High has been an outstanding high school in many respects. The one which has brought most praise to our school has been the ex- cellent program of citizenship training. A. I l.S. is known throughout the state and the entire Southeast of our nation for the good behavior of the student body. Courtesy, honesty, sincerity, cooperation, and integrity are traits of character which can be checked as above average for most of the young women and young men enrolled in the student body. I he moni torial system of student participation in the administration of the high school has been the “seed bed for this citizenship training. Hie monitorial body is made up of elected representatives from each homeroom. The Monitorial Council is the Executive organization for the bodv of monitors. It is the responsibility of these two groups to lead the students in a program of good citizenship. Their duties extend to all school activities other than in the classroom. I he Varsity Team was made up of nine new players. Four of these will play for Ashley in 1957. There was a supporting squad of sixty ; forty-eight of these will play next year. There was only one loss due to injury during the football season; no player was disqualified because of his academic standing. The Green Wave had a tough schedule from the first game to the last, but the team ended with a .500 record. Ashlev scored 129 points to our opponents 167. John Campbell scored 60 points during the season, entitling him to play on the Western All-Star Team. There were three Senior players on the 1957 team. Two varsity players and sixteen squad members will form the nucleus for strong 1958 and 1959 teams. Gastonia definitely expects to win the State Championship in 1959. The squad players proved to be very promising— their perform ance in this year’s games was brilliant. The Sophomore players were the best that Ashley Senior High has had since the years of Kelton, Hoffman, and Lindsay. The Green Wave was defeated twice only by Salisbury and Greens boro, the two top ranking teams. In no game did Gastonia fail to give the opposition a tull dose of competition. 1 hey merited the confi dence which followed them through the last game. The margin of losing points for the season just averaged four points per game. Hre Green Wave defeated their traditional rival, Charlotte Central, in both conference games. Jimmy Summey, forward, was voted an all-Conference player. Summey and Del- linger were high scorers for the season. This is the Way to become state champions in 1959. It is the largest group of its kind in the entire world. The greatest honor which can come to a high school student is to be elected to membership in the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society was started to stimulate scholar- ship in the secondary schools of the country, and to endeavor to place secondary education on higher levels. It was decided from the beginning to recognize character, service, leadership, and scholarship in the students of the high schools, and in so doing to stimulate all members of the high school to trv to at- tain those attributes and those elements of high standing.
