ARS ITZY Our basketball team again added to the fame of Ashley High by winning the championship of the North Lea- gue. Our arch-rivals, Swoyersville fell three times before one of the classiest combinations ever to represent the orange and black. Four of the first six boys to start games came from the class of '53, They were: Captain Dave Evans, consistent scorer and superb on rebounds, Dan Stankiewicz, Highest scorer of the team, a deceptive ball-handler, and renown for his variety of shots, Joe Gay, steady guard and fine play- makerg and Red Williams, a flashy guard. Leonard Penkrot, a junior, contributed to the scoring with a fine push shot, and good work under the basket. Steve Sokolowski a freshman, performed like a real veteran while Billy Biggs, a junior, helped out in many a tight pinch at forward. Koznetski, Mastroff, and D. Yancheck saw service in many games. A strong bench was one of the outstanding characteristics of the team. This years team is expected to enter the Class B playoffs for this district shortly. However, due to a dead- line we could not report the results. Much of the success of the team should be accredited to the coach, Mr. Jablonski. ln his own disarming way he goes on year after year producing excellent teams at Ashley High. Even in times of great despair Mr. Iablonski's loyalty to his teams never falters. By the example he sets a true meaning of the word sportsmanship is instilled into his teams. Mr. Jablonski has an enviable record as head basketball coach at Ashley. ln '7 sea- sons his teams have won 139 and lost 31 . Our hats are off to you, Si!
