Left to right Mr Breznay, Miss Cole, Mr Burnside, Mrs Simmons NANCY COLE N ONG SO OF AREA TO OFFER WORK 'PENNSYLVANIA PROVING GROUND OF DEMOCRACY'n Nancy Cole, Ashley High School senior, was awarded S100 by Pennsylvania Retailers' Association yesterday, for writing an essay on 'Pennsylvania, The roving Ground of Democracy The contest was sponsored by the retailers' association and was open to private, parochial and public school seniors of the State Miss Cole was one of three ersons to receive the 3100 awards The top prize was Sl,OOO, second prize, SOO and third prize, S200 Nine other seniors were recipients of SSO Early in October the seniors entered the contest when they submitted factual essays on Pennsylvania Miss Cole received the highest mark of her class and attended the dinner with approximately SO other seniors from high schools of the area These seniors were eligible for the contest and submitted their essays to the retailers' association at Harrisburg CATHERINE DZANKO CAPTURES LEGION PRIZE Catherine Dzanko, a senior at Ashley High school and daughterof Mr and Mrs Michael Dzanko, 21 Manhattan Street, Ashley, won the District 12, sv American Legion, oratorical finals at Kingston High School division,defeated four other contestants fromother partsof District l2,wh1ch embraces Luzerne County She was presented the District 12 Americanism trophy by Attorney Herman B Shepard, district commander Louis J Greco served as Americanism chairman of District 12 Unsuccessfulcontestants were Gordon Roberts, Plains, Agnes Charney, West Wyoming, Mary J Pallagher, Hanover Township, and Nancy Mittle an, Kingston Judges were Rabbi Carl Manello, Prof Joseph McCarthy of the Education and English department of King's College, and Prof Albert Croh S X 6 II H AM I P .ll gas . . , A O - Miss Dzanko, who represented the southeastern O 1. -A , ,N Ax' ,
