It was the largest class, even taking up some of the Sophomores’ seats. We seemed to get along all right in registering and as- signments. After we became acquainted with good old Ashley High and the faculty our Freshman year proved to be a busy one. Miss Cook became our class sponsor and the elected officers were: Dick Harmes, President; Ruth Ann Hoffelder, Vice- President; Troas Orwig, Secretary; Bill Wilson, Reporter. There were two parties that year, one a great hay ride with two tractor-drawn wagons to the farm of our sponsor's father at Garrett. Who could forget the wieners? The second class party was held at the Community Building at Fairfield Center with games and food for all. In March Herman Lehman from Kendallville joined us and Marilyn Deetz moved to Huntertown. April found our Freshman work finished and us eager for vacation. In the following September we began our Sophomore year with three new students; Margaret Redmon, Helen Stout, June Hart. Helen Altimus, Maxine Carroll, Robert Farver, Faye Franze, Pauline Royer, Paul Stoy, Nelda Strauser and Juanita Voges had not come back to join us. Dolly Arney was our sponsor and elected officers were: Dean Stoy, President; Fred Rose, Vice-President; Clarice Whysong, Secretary; Bill Wilson, Reporter. Two exciting parties were held that year. The first was a skating party at Silver Moon. We had a large group and were refunded some money to begin the funds for our Junior and Senior Trip. The second party was a picnic supper at Pokagon. A treasure hunt lead us all over the park and ended up at the animal pens. A softball game, girls against the boys, proved the boys to be the win- ners. The evening grew cool and we were glad to have our picnic supper ciose to a fireplace. The cold early spring wind nipped at everyone. After we cleared things away, we left for a show at Angola. Some of the class was to be found in each theater. In January three students, June Hart, Harley Pankop, and Jean Smith left us and in February James Hovarter decided to discontinue his work. This was the most important year for us because we ordered and received our class rings and sweaters. We also chose our class color, blue and white, and class flower, the American Beauty Rose. We were honored by having in our class that year the queen of Ashley High, Troas Orwig. The school year ended with a party for the whole high school at Hamilton Lake. We returned in the fall, beaming with pride and big plans to be as busy as little beavers! Right away we chose our old stand-by, Dolly, as class sponsor and the elected officers were: Fred Rose, President; Mona June Strite, Vice-President; Ruth Ann Hoffelder, Secretary; Joann Miller, Treasurer; and Bill Wilson, Reporter. Before the year had hardly started, we were working and planning on the Junior play, ‘ The Adorable Imp.’' It was ready by November and the cast that gave it so well were: Joyce Leply, Mona June Strite, Margaret Redmon, Ruth Kreischer, Elaine Lehmar, Ruth Ann Hoffelder, Fred Rose, John Wilhelm, Dean Stoy, John Miller, and Bill Wilson. We were busily engaged in selling ice cream and candy at school and at games. Then we added a new pencil dispenser, so everyone could have a new pencil to use and we could make money for our Junior and Senior trip to Chicago. On a bright morning in May, sixty excited Juniors and Seniors proceeded on their trip to Chicago. We went sight-seeing and visited many interesting places of im- portance, After numerous little mishaps and much fun, we arrived home all tired and ready for sleep. In January, Bill Prather joined us from Kansas and in March we lost Floyd and Loyd Becker to Salem. We had only one party that year which was a potluck Christmas Party. At the end of the term we lost Elaine Lehmar who moved to Portland, Oregon and Bill Prather went back to Kansas. Our Senior year opened with four classmates displaying diamonds: Phyllis Chrisman, Berdena Wiler, Ruth Kreischer, and Beverly Deetz. The class had a’ noted air of distinction about them. Our first class meeting ended with Dean Stoy, President; Dick Harmes, Vice-President; Mona June Strite, Secretary; Joann Miller, Treasurer; Bill Wilson, Reporter; Mr. Frederick, our sponsor, Paul Conrad from Hamilton High and Louise Becker from Kendallville joined our class. Soon, however, Harold Jacobs, Louise Becker, and Ruth Kreischer discon- tinued their work. Our Senior pictures were taken before Christmas and we chose our Motto; ‘ Not at the Top, but Climbing.’ Our class has been active in many activities in all four years and has been very successful and happy group. As the annual goes to press, there are thirty-two students left in our class to carry through the tradition of the Junior-Senior Banquet or Trip, Class Night, Baccalaureate, and the. . . graduation! Fromthe corridor of the Ashley Memorial Hospital two nurses, Barbara Sanders and Katrina Prosser, step into the dimly lit waiting room where Rita Ellert is sitting patiently waiting for her husband, Dr. Robert Mee. The three girls sit down and start talking. They soon wander onto the subject of their old classmates. Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara; Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Rita; Katrina: Barbara: Rita; Katrina: Barbara: Rita: I wonder what happened to Frank Kessler? Why, he is now head of the U.S.S, Steel Corporation. And do you remember Troas Orwig? After all these years, she has finally decided to marry him. Do you remember Ruth Anne Hoffelder and Joan Miller? They are now running a boarding house jus t for bachelors. Speaking of running boarding houses, Ned Sanders and Berdena Wiler probably think they are running a boarding house too. You should see all the little blonde boarders. ‘Do you remember my girl-friend, Joan Days, whose long ambition was to travel? She has finally fulfilled her wish. She is now steward- ess for the Hurd’s Airline Inc. She sure is lucky, but do you remember Violet Gipple? Ske is work- ing as a stand-in for Judy Garland. That cute Clarice Whysonp’s looks have surely paid off. She is now a famous model for the Paris Beauty Salon of Ashley. The Salon is under the ownership of the exquisite blonde Crystal Shipe. Did you know Mona June Strite and Beverly Deetz are now co-owners of the Ashley S D Bait Factory? I think Dean Stoy as outdone us all; he is now an English teacher at North Side in Fort Wayne. Speaking of teachers, Helen Newcomer is now head of the Home Economics Department of Ashley High School. Phyllis Snyder is head of the Latin Department. I still remember Philip Ellert and his girlfriend, Margaret Redmon. I wonder what ever happened to them ? Philip is still at home waiting for Margaret, who is now Superintendent of Nurses at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne. 11 Katrina: Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Rita: Katrina: Barbara: Bill Wilson, our class Casanova, is now on Station A-S-H-L-E-Y-F-M as a national joker. He became a Bob Hope; his co-star is Joan Ellert, alias Chicken, who imitates that famous comic character, Donald Duck. Dean Paulen, veteran windsock of the Ashley Class, is still up in the air. He 's Admiral Paulen now, commander of the aircraft carrier U.S.S, Windy Pass. Did you know that Joyce Lepley is an old maid and still Dodging around ? Do you recall our high school play-boy Larry Stomm. Well, he is fixed fine, now. He turned out to be a real for sure scientist. Paul Conrad used to say he was going to be another Frank Sinatra. Welt, he is singing lullabies to his children. Did Phyllis Chrisman marry Marion Baker ? Yes, and they now own the Ashley Baking Co. which bakes all the supplies for Rexall Drug Store where Marcella Hammon is working as a jerk, a soda that is. Freddie sure is in dead business, for he is now the friendly undertaker, Did you say dead business? That's Johnny Wilhelm’s work; he keeps the farmers buying new stock for he is now the veterinarian for all farmers out of Ashley. Dick Harme'’s high school athletics have sure paid off: he is now coach of the Zoliner Pistons. I suppose you knew that Helen Stout finally married that soldier boy and they are now raising their own army. That ‘‘little’’ Peggy Kissinger gave her first art exhibit in Chicago this year, I wonder if she married that short boy friend of hers? Oh, she probably left him to marry some interesting art fellow in Chicago. Here comes Bob, I°ll have to leave now. I'll have to hurry home to get Paul’s supper. It was fun remembering old classmates, but I’ll have to go home now, because Jack is going to take me out for supper. b2 WILL We, the Class of '49 of Ashley High School, situated in the city of Ashley in the County of DeKalb in the State of Indiana, being in an unusually sound state of mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this our last will and testament, leaving our cherished possessions which we have accumulated during our four years of high school to the under-classmen and faculty. Corky Conrad stood and watched the game with growing amazement for quite some time. Finally he remarked ‘‘Why I never saw a dog play cards be- fore! °°’ ‘ Oh, he's really not so good,’’ replied Dick, ‘the wags his tail every time he gets a good hand.’’ kK Without mentioning any names, a Senior guy was out with a Junior girl and they were having a pretty dull time. Finally she turned to him and said in disgust, ‘'I wish I'd known you when you were alive.’’ OK OK Two morons were standing in front of Wilhelm’s restaurant recently gabbing away. Neither could tell time and both were wise to each other. Finally the first asked the second, ‘‘What time is it by your watch?’' The second one pulled out his watch and said, ‘'There she is.’’ ‘‘Darned if she ain't,’' admitted the stymied one. OK OK Did you hear about the fellow on the football team who was a drawback? Oe OK John Wilhelm relates this tale about his trip to Chicago. He stayed on the third floor of a hotel. There were about three other groups on that floor among which was a prominent businessman and his wife. On the floor directly above the apart- ment of the businessman and his wife lived a rather rowdy couple who irritated the businessman beyond words. One night the faucet to the bath in the apartment above was left running and soon flooded the downstairs. Amid a wild burst of profanity, the businessman demanded that the erring ones shut off the water. The young fellow shouted back ‘'Stop your cursing, I’ve gota lady up here. ’ To which he got the snappy reply, ‘‘What do ya’ think I've got down here, a duck. ’ OK Ok Billie Stonebraker rode over to see Tommy Harmes the other day. He found Tommy trying desperately to get his pony into the house via the back door. Billie didn’t know what to think, but he decided to play along with Tommy and help him. They finally succeeded in getting the horse into the kitchen and from there into the bathroom. After that curiosity got the best of Billie and he asked Tommy what he was do- ing that for. ‘sWell, replied Tommy, ‘‘Whenever I try to tell Dick something, he always says ‘Yeah, I know--I know.’ So, tonight, when he comes in from doing the chores and goes in the bathroom to wash, he'll see the pony in the bathroom and come out and say ‘Tom, there's a pony in the bathroom’, ’ ‘‘Then I'll say, Yeah, I know--1 know. 29 Mr. Fee was lecturing his biology class. ‘'I propose to show you,’ he said, ‘ta specimen of a dissected frog, which I have in this parcel., ' He untied the parcel and disclosed an egg and some sandwiches.
