Ashland Col- lege - the school with a spirit! ln the 1978 Pine Whispers - e 100th annual- we say Ashland Col- ege - the school with a spirit and future! We have been a college blest with people who have been able to over- come the trials and tribulations found in a college situation. But the Ashland Story isn t over. We celebrate this year with Founders Week. We swear in a new president. We become a new spirit. We continue on as the pilgrims before us - plan- ning new roads for the Liberal Arts Education - we face financial and energy problems with better solutions - and we progress with each new idea. We prepare for the second hun- dred years. Basketball anyone? Our departments today are many and are varied to offer the best pos- sible curriculum and foundation for students in the many degree areas. Athletics have played an impor- tant role in the structure of Ash- land's history. Since the early 1900 s women have been in sports at Ashland. Today they make up a large part of the physical education department. .103 sports Competitive sports have brought many hours of enjoyment for men and women and have cre ated the Bold Gold and Purple Pride we share progressed for the safety ot players Women no longer have to play basketball in cumbersome dresses' That s progress' today. Dr Rhoades work on the Ashland College campus was a twofold gift In his biology classes it was his knowledge of and love for the field Out of the classroom it was his sense of humor He was named twice as an Outstanding Educator in America. He was internationally known for his knowledge and collection of crayfish Proud are we that he was a faculty member of this college fsigf hN tr: is N HSS-r : ' . r- .. 1.14 ' . 'V 'I .fi But his lite was filled with numerous hobbies. Mere words can not express what a gifted man he was, At his untimely death in September of l976, he had in manuscript form a history of Ashland Col- lege to be published during the lOOth anniversary ofthe school. ln the US. National Museum there is a display of his crayfish collection. Ort the Ashland campus there remains his memory. And for many, there remains a gift he gave that is considered so pre- cious in life' that gift was his time.
