THE EAGLE A supposedly ordinary day on the Ash- land College Campus became an extra- ordinary day when a purple and gold eagle suddenly appeared, implanted in front of Old Founder's Hall. Since that day in 1940, some fourteen other eagles have mysteriously arrived on campus. The Mystery of the arrivals is that, with the exception of Old Abe, all the eagles on campus have arrived at night. The eagles, with the exception of Louise, were donated by the J. I. Case Company. In 1940, Louise was purchased through a col- lection which was taken every day after Chapel until she was paid for. J. I. Case started using the eagle as his trademark in 1861 after seeing Old Abe , an eagle acquired by traders from the Chip- pewa Indians and placed in the State Capi- tol Building in Wisconsin. He first showed Old Abe on a perch, then on a branch, and finally on a globe to symbolize world- wide distribution for his company. Since Louise, who is now situated in front of Miller Hall, the disappearance of the eagles from the Case dealers has been the object of many night journeys. Tradition has also come to Ashland. It is supposedly good luck to drop a penny in Louise's beak before a final exam. Also, the wooden eagle mascot which is present at all home athletic contests, and the eagle which is used for the introduction of players at basketball games were inspired by the Case eagle although they are some- what different in appearance.
