' . ' , . . 4 J-, A THE EAGLE A supposedly ordinary day on the Ash- land College Campus became an extra- ordinary day when a purple and gold eagle suddenly appeared, implanted in front of Old Founder's Hall. Since that day in 1940, some fourteen other eagles have mysteriously arrived on campus. The Mystery of the arrivals is that, with the exception of Old Abe, all the eagles on campus have arrived at night. The eagles, with the exception of Louise, were donated by the J. I. Case Company. In 1940, Louise was purchased through a col- lection which was taken every day after Chapel until she was paid for. J. I. Case started using the eagle as his trademark in 1861 after seeing Old Abe , an eagle acquired by traders from the Chip- pewa Indians and placed in the State Capi- tol Building in Wisconsin. He first showed Old Abe on a perch, then on a branch, and finally on a globe to symbolize world- wide distribution for his company. Since Louise, who is now situated in front of Miller Hall, the disappearance of the eagles from the Case dealers has been the object of many night journeys. Tradition has also come to Ashland. It is supposedly good luck to drop a penny in Louise's beak before a final exam. Also, the wooden eagle mascot which is present at all home athletic contests, and the eagle which is used for the introduction of players at basketball games were inspired by the Case eagle although they are some- what different in appearance. TUDE T SENATE The purpose of this highly representative body is to enact and en- force any legislation within its scope of power. The membership of the Senate includes the presidents of the four classes, a representative from each class, and the elected Senate officers. The activities and responsibilities of the Senate include sponsoring all-school functions, supervising the editing of the handbooks, yearbook, and newspaper, and preparing all Monday assemblies. 3 As Seniors, we are on the verge of completing four of the most educational, prosperous, and exciting years of our lives. Granted, we have been considered and taught as individuals and had the opportunity to draw directly upon the knowledge and inspiration of our instructors, however, the essence of a college education cannot be found in the classroom alone, but must be searched for and found by each student in his own way. Ashland College is the place to seek such an opportunityg a kind of op- portunity made up of individual desire on the part of the student and a genuine concern on the part of the college. Each of us will have a great feeling of accomplishment in our degree because we have worked hard to earn it. We, in student government, have had such an opportunity in striv- ing constantly to serve the best interests of the student body. We have witnessed constant growth and as a result we had to deal with many new problems to maintain pace with this growth. We did not always know the right answer but thanks to Mr. Roland and Mr. Marble, our advisors, we were enabled to proceed along valuable guidelines. SISTERS GF PHI MLI Pi Kappa Pi is the oldest social sorority on the Ashland College campus. It was originally known as a Fine Arts Club when founded in 1948. The purpose was, and still is, to create in- terest and enthusiasm for art of all types and to assist in any of these fields, to serve in any way possible to the community, to constitute an organization wherein girls majoring or inter- ested in fine arts and social activities will have an opportunity to become acquainted with each other and their interests. One way of achieving these goals is partici- pating in an altruistic project which is visiting the residents of the Good Shepherd Home. This project has proven to be extremely reward- ing for the sorority as well as enjoyable for the residents. Some of the sisters are also partici- pating as aides in the Cub Scout program here in Ashland. We also work in cooperation with other organizations on the annual Homecom- ing Mum Sale. We encourage our members to participate in clubs or organizations of their major fields, and to become participants in the affairs of the campus. We encourage participation in the re- ligious life of the community and in programs of a cultural nature available to the college community. Sigma Nu came to Ashland College on Janu- ary 23, 1966 when the then local Alpha Sigma Nu fraternity became a colony of the national fraternity. 'N-'-. if COL 4 nan 8 9 wr, my I A'S'HLP'S9m INTRAMLIRALS I TR MLIRA S Since its beginning on Ashland College's Campus, the Intramural sports program has been an integral part of the feeling of Accent on the Individual. Intramural Sports are predicated on participation and organized to fit the needs and interests of all students. This program is designed to provide participation and recreation in a free- time situation that allows a student the proper place and condition in which to release the pent-up emotions locked away through the pressures of college life. Intramural sports are set up so that the student may gain a co-operative educational experience away from the class room, in a competitive situation through which he may gain some measure of success. In the last three years, the Intramural Department and its program has grown considerably. The percentage of stu- dents participating over the past three years has risen from 75? the first year, to 85? the second, and hopefully, 907: this year. The Intramural staff has also grown in number from two members the first year, to a six member staff at present. This growth creates better organization in activities and more convenient scheduling of these ac- tivities. A two division league was created by the Intramural department to better handle the growth of the-student body. These divisions in participating groups, fraternity and dorm divisions, equalizes the competition somewhat, and limits the number of participating groups so that a maximum amount of participation may be allowed. These two divisions have increased the number of teams from twelve last year, to eighteen this year, and it is the hope of the Intramural department that these teams will increase next year to twenty teams, ten in each division. Intramurals has been helped in its growth by the completion of the Intramural fields on Broad Street, and will be helped even further by the completion of other new facilities next year and in the years to come. With the addition of these new facilities, it will be possible for the department to add some new activities such as handball, swimming, and possibly indoor track. It is our hope that the addition of new sports will continue. The Intramural department has become affiliated nationally with such organizations as the National Industrial Recreational Association. These memberships were gained so we might better familiarize ourselves with other pro- grams and be able to present our own program to the students. Through these affiliations Ashland College has been represented for the first time at a national level. This spring we competed in pool, bowling, and ping-pong at the National Collegiate Recreation Tournaments held at Central Michigan University.
