Over the years Ashland College has demonstrated that growth, loy- alty, improvement, and achievement are the keys to success. Recent years show that rapid enlargement can be carried out and the image and products remain the same. We student and staff members alike can attribute much of the re- sulting improved image to one man, Dr. Glenn L. Clayton, President of Ashland College. Without the guiding hand of Dr. Clayton we are sure that many of the students and graduates would not have had the advantages that were available to them. The two new residence halls, now under construction, are visible proofvofithe expansion necessary to house our rapidly growing student body. Dr. Clayton, we salute you and thank you. . Each new building's groundbreaking brings to light the planner's smile of completion and the twinkling promise in the educator's eye. Each new Ashland College graduate is a living groundbreaking. He represents more than a four year stay in schoolg he represents the completion of an apprentice- ship in growth and development. This finishing process is a lifetime job-a lifetime of learning. In the liberal arts tradition, Ashland Collegeis principles are no better reflected than in the per- sonage of GEORGE lVl. GUILEY As an avid reader, he constantly acquaints himself with success and failure-man's progress. He ex- plores vocahulary and excels as a linguist. His tastes rival a gourmet's. His efforts to serve his fellowman touch country, community, and college. During World War ll, eight Navy officers were assigned to SONAR research and development. He was one of four stationed in the Pacific, and is still active in the Naval Reserve. The city of Ashland knows him as a Rotarian, a Mason, and a devout layman. The college sees him daily as Dean of Students and Associate Professor of Physics. Professional societies such as the American College Personnel Association and the Ameri- can Association of Physio Teachers pen his name on their rosters. To praise him is trite, to respect him is understatement. His sense of duty and fair play are badges of esteem. We thrill at having him as one of Ashland's own. We applaud him as a man. w ggfim , ' ,. mM'E'3u.C4 t A N MQW W X: yy gr X9 Ms ,Q ws hifi 0 M Y 76 v L MMM M V gf My VW 1 A ' W my h 1 Wh QBW ' f x ,M M Wm 'MW' w M M Y H H I Www ,wg ,Q wwf? Fra- ternities supplement classroom instruction with social experience and prepare their members to take their places in the world of well-rounded men. The well organ- ized and properly operated college fraternity can, and should, do more for its un- dergraduate members than the college of which it is a part. All the college can do is afford the student an opportunity to acquire a certain amount of knowledge. The fraternity can go a long way in teaching him how to use that knowledge. The brothers of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity feel that their fraternity develops per- sonality, promotes mutual understanding, furnishes a college home, encourages scholarship, increases social poise, provides business training and enhances loyalty. The brothers of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity feel that they have had an excellent social program during the past year. Included in this program was a pajama party at the beginning of the year which turned out to be very interesting, the annual Heaven and Hell Party, a 'cGrundy Party and numerous other social activities in the commu- nity. In the community the brothers went together with the sisters of Delta Zeta in making Thanksgiving Baskets for the needy people of Ashland. The brothers marched for the Heart Fund on Heart Sunday with tremendous success. Installa- tion into Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity took place on April 16. The quick pace and pressures created by the desire to gain a college education create a need for a release. This is found by many students at A.C. through varsity competition, however, for many others it is accomplished through the intramural program. A.C.'s intramural program offers a variety of 19 activities. They include chess, tennis, bridge, foot- ball, softball, basketball, bowling, pool, track, cross country, putt-putt golf, golf tournament, foul shooting, checkers, ping-pong, tug-of-war, wrestling, badminton and volleyball. Activities are open to all A.C. students except those participating at the same time in a varsity sport. The program is set up on a basis of competition and recreation. Unlike Physical Education, intra- mural sports participation is not mandatory at A.C. One might think they were judging from last year's record-80 per cent male participation! A director and a staff of students run the program. Rules, activities and awards are governed by A.C. Intramural Council. The council is comprised of one member of each of 14- competing groups in two divisions of competition, fraternity and dormitory. These men are to be congratulated on the job they have done over the past 2 years in advancing intramural sports at Ashland College. In the past year, A.C. Women's Intramural Program has also grown and continued expansion is expected. Since the conception of Intramurals two years ago the Department has grown from a two man staff to a five man staff. Ed McGinnis, Intramural Director, Nelson Hardesty, Student Assistant Director, .lim Wantuck, Student Assistant, Bob Natherson and Ken Mezurek, Student Supervisors. It has gone from 11 competing groups to 16 teams and has doubled the number of participants per event. The department has added a bus for transportation to our many facilities throughout the city. Within the next year the students will be able to take advantage of their soon-to-be-completed rec- reation area at Moss Hill. This area includes three softball diamonds, three flag football fields, and a field hockey field. The remaining ground will be used for further expansion. With the construction of A.C.,s new Physical Education Center, intramural facilities will be complete. This facility will offer an expansion in our overall program with the addition of such sports as handball and swimming. Therefore, each contact and each communication increases his ambitions and his hopes. As President of the Senior Class, I realize more and more the importance of the individ- ual. What the individual has been given here at Ashland College will be the keystone to his future. The college years have lifted our level of insight and maturity. Other facets of our growth have been in the areas of tact, organization, judgment, confidence, and goodwill. We have achieved these attributes through full cooperation of the faculty and students. As a result of the past years, each of us will carry a broadened ability to choose or reject the challenges of our future. We hope that this will be done with credit to our Alma Mater. Weiss' W'algreen Agency William's Accordian Dear Reader: This yearbook has been published at a cost of just less than 3B13,000. Part of the cost was covered through activity fees collected by the business office. The remainder has been obtained from the patrons listed on the preceding page. This production was accomplished using student photography, layout and design. By using this method, as opposed to professional work, the costs and expenses have been cut to nearly half of that of earlier editions. While cutting costs, the book was expanded to meet the requirements of a grow- ing college. I am quite proud of this edition and the work done by A. C. Photo and the Pine Whispers staff. There are, however, many people whouadvised and contributed material that cannot be named. It is they I wish to thank, most humbly, for their graciousness. Sincerely, Daniel James Dotson, Editor TAYI:9.ltN ILUEQSHING COMPANY 3 73.15125 2f5G'L. 'W ' fi. 2?-5 -v' , . ,QQ fg Ln, ' l 1 iff- N- 11 1. gwQ '. fV9.f1 .
