Tom is active and hardworking but always finds time to help anyone whenever he can. Music and sailing are two of his favorite hobbies, but Tom receives the greatest happiness from helping others. Football 1963 WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALL TEAM? Maybe it is a 9-1 record. Or maybe three shutouts in a row to start off the gridiron campaign. Or is it the team’s first win over the Wooster Scots since 1930—33 long years. Success may also be marked by a team’s 31-0, homecoming victory over Defiance to snare the Mid-Ohio Conference championship. Or to score 13 clutch points in the final quarter to trip Bluffton in the contest between the MOC’s top two squads. Could it be that the school’s top winning season in the college’s existence makes the team the best in the school’s history. Can the Associated Press of sports writers be wrong in rating the team in the top 20 of small college ratings in the nation. Maybe a team is considered excellent because of its 12th rank in small college defense. Success may equal five shutouts in a 10-game schedule, or whipping three out-of-state teams. Could a grid team’s success be marked by the fact that 10 players were selected to the first string on the all-league team. Maybe its the coach—one who is rated third-best Ohio Coach-of-the-Year. Then again, the mere fact that two team members receive honorable mention recognition of the NAIA team goes to show success. What about a kicking specialist who ties the state and NAIA for most field goals in season and lifetime while leading the state in total kicking points. Coach Bob Stokes and his Ashland College Eagles did not fare as well as past hilltop basketball teams have fared but still, the team’s 8-11 record this season was achieved on the strength of a team made up of nary a senior. Two juniors and three sopho- mores carried a majority of the first-string load, thus making the cage future a bright one. Ashland ended Mid-Ohio Conference play with a 4-4 record, good enough for a third place finish. The team was in the heat of the MOC title race until Wilmington, the league champs, handed the AC ers two defeats. Perhaps the biggest win of the campaign came over neighboring college Wooster. AC gained tre- venge for last year’s defeat to the Scots by winning by an eight-point margin. The Eagles also snared two wins over Defiance and Malone. Pre-season predictions by most teams in the league put the team at the bottom but once again, Coach Stokes floored a representable cage team. Seas The Administration PRESIDENT GLENN L. CLAYTON President's Message To those of us who live and work on her campus, Ashland College is more than a school. It is a living, thriving community composed of more than 1300 students in all divisions plus over 110 men and women who work full or part time in its interests. In addition there are several thousands of people working with or for the school as Trustees, advisors, contributors and consultants. Any attempt to record the myriad activities of this community for one year is a prodigious task and one which deserves the dee p appreciation of all. The volume of constructive work, study, research and planning, the record of social activities, both personal and in groups, and the succession of spirited athletic contests, five concerts, distinguished lectures and plays is not easy to portray. We are proud of Ashland’s compact, friendly atmosphere. We are pleased with the spirit and industry of students, faculty, and staff. We are glad to be a part of a fine and growing city. We are happy to be counted among the well known colleges of our state. 146 E. P. LERSCH Director of Public Relations ARTHUR B.
