This individual is a dedicated teacher, trusted friend, advisor and lasting in- spiration to countless hundreds of students. This person has many talents, among them are the ability to ride a bike, fence, and be a grandfather. It is with great pleasure and pride that we of the Pine Whispers Staff dedicate this, the 1963 Yearbook to Rev. Jay Ray Klingensmith. Look at all his hair. The thinker is at work. He even cooks??? Here he talks with some of the students on campus. FRESHMEN ORIENTATION Look at all those freshmen. How many will be here when they are Seniors? Let an old pro tell you Freshmen what to do. Haven't | met you somewhere before?? Let me give you a hand. The first day of classes weren't so bad were they?? The poor freshmen have to take tests and tests. Everyone is required to go to Fall Invocations. Don't the instructors look nice and fresh? All ready to greet the freshmen? 10 Jay Pressler, Trudy Steen, Judy Hall, Cliff Prindle. Hear ye, hear ye, the Freshmen have arrived. This was the first year for the popular concerts sponsored by the Student Senate and the program was a big success. Ever since their first meeting with the American public-at-large via their initial appearance on the Jack Paar Show, the Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, have shown every sign of becoming a national institution. Never before has such devastating wit been coupled with such versatile musicology. The result is a combination as un- usual as it is exciting. To hear the Smothers Brothers’ gleeful dismantling of commercialized folk music is to partake of comic hi-jinks of the highest sort. And yet, when they apply their talents seriously to a song in which they believe, the result is folk singing, as an art unto itself. The Smothers Brothers are uniquely entertaining. In point of fact, they’re unique. The Smothers Brothers pose for a picture. STUDENT SENATE Dick and Tom sign autographs for their fans. Tom does his usual pouting act while Dick looks on disgustedly. Aa Tony and Bob can't help but laugh when Jimmy sings ‘‘Runaway’’. The Lettermen mimic another popular singing group in jest. POPULAR CONCERTS Bob sings ‘Kansas City'’—an old A.C. favorite. Shit att In a time when talent, taste and musicianship are too often disregarded The Lettermen are indeed unique. They have incorporated these elements to form the freshest new sound to in- vade the pop field in years. The Lettermen really are lettermen. Their interest in sports was one factor in their teaming- up. When the y did combine they were an ob- vious hit from the very beginning. Their wit, humor and charm were tremendously appreciated and accepted by both students and faculty. Everyone hopes that someday we may have them for a return engagement. 46 Mike Maggiano Carol Maiwurm Ed Knittle Donna Haber Stan Zimmer Watch out Freshman here come Sophomores????? the pba tn ais.t sake KAY ALBRIGHT DONALD AMES JANE ARNOLD JoANN AUER JAMES AULT PATRICIA BAKER EVA BEARD MARCIA BECKETT NORMA BELL PAULA BENJAMIN Se ee LARRY BENSON SHARON BERKSHIRE CAROL BETOR LINDA BILLMAN KAREN BOOTH 47 48 SUSAN BRICKER DRUCILLA BROWN MARILYN BROWNS SANDRA BROWN DAY BRUCKART DIANA BUTTERWORTH PALMA CETINA DIANA CHANDLER DOUG CLICK MARY CLOUSER JACK COVER DIANE DAMON JANE DARNELL BETHANY DAUGHTERY DALE DICKERSON MICHAEL DIGIACOMO TIMOTHY DOWNIE DONALD DRAPER MICHAEL DRUSHAL REBECCA EFIRD DAVID ELLISON RICK EROMANN OTTO FABRITIUS BARRY FERGUSON JAMES FIELDS i PENELOPE FISHER JOYCE FRY PAT GAEDE ALAN GANO KAY GARBER 49 50 DAN GARTNER PAUL GLASGO LINDA GOODWIN HERSCHEL GRIM DONNA HABER GARY HACKETT DAVID HAKAIM MARILYN HARRISON MARY HART CURTIS HICKS GARY HODGE TOM HOOTMAN PATRICIA HOOVER GARY HOWELL ROBERTA HOYE SHERRIE HUMPHREY TERRY HUNT LEEANN HYDE CYNTHIA JENNINGS CHARLES JOHNSON JANET KAYLOR JOYCE KERR SANDRA KERR ALICE KINDLEY JOYCE KISTE SALLY KLINGEL ED KNITTLE FLOYD KOEGLER DONNA KOSAR TERRY KRISTOFF r RITA LANG SHIRLEY LEE GARY LEEPER HELEN LIME PHILIP LINNE JENEANE LOMAX REBECCA LONG JOAN MacKELLER MIKE MAGGIANO CAROL MAIWURM 4) ; MARY McNEAL MARYANN MOOG KAREN MOOSE HEATHER MORRISON JUDY MUCCI 52 RICHARD MURRAY ELEANOR ONEY DENNIS OSBORN JOSIE OWENS CAROL POSTEMA ee . Judd, Congressman and physician- missionary, spoke at Ashland College on March 1 at Memorial Chapel. He is a nationally recognized authority on United States foreign policy and has served 10 terms as a Member of Congress from Minnesota. Having lived 10 years in China as a medical missionary, Dr. Judd is one of the relatively few Americans who can speak with personal know- ledge of the sinister significance of what is happen- ing in Asia and the Pacific. STUDENT-FACULTY LECTURES Ambassador Sergio Rojas, former Cuban Am- bassador to Great Britain, spoke in Chapel on Feb- ruary 1. Rojas served as Cuban Ambassador to Great Britain from January 1958 until June 1960, when he broke with the Castro Government. An economist by profession, Rojas has represented Cuba before the Pan American Coffee Bureau. He holds the Grand Order of the Red Cross for services rendered to that organization. At the present time, Rojas is in the confidential activities in the political and diplomatic field in Washington, D. C. 60 A nationally known humorist, author and educator, Irv Wermont, addressed the student body on February 15. Author of the book, “Here’s How To Remember,’’ Wermont has presented seminars on memory and _ person- ality development to executives and super- visory personnel of the country’s largest corp- orations. Dr. H. Warner Kloepfer, specialist in human ge- netics, lectured on October 11. Dr. Kloepfer's field of research ranges broadly throughout all phases of genetics, with particular emphasis on the role of genes in the transmission of or susceptibility to dis- eases. A native of Ohio, Dr. Kloepfer received B. S. and M. A. degrees from Ohio University, an A. B. from Muskingum College, and was awarded his doctorate by Ohio State University in 1942. He is now Associate Professor at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Darrell Randall appeared in Chapel on November 2. Specialist on Asian-African af- fairs, economic development planning con- sultant, writer and public lecturer, Dr. Randall has just returned from a Conference on Dis- armament and East-West tension, in London and further conferences in Berlin and Bonn, Germany regarding the Berlin crisis. CLAYTON Presidents Message . . . As we near the close of another year and gather the record of its activities, we realize as perhaps we did not see during the year, how full and complete it has been. Records have been challenged in the academic fields as well as athletic and cultural ones. The year saw the beginning of construction on a new and badly needed Science Center, enlargement of the Student Union and advanced talks concerning a proposed additional dormitory and dining facility. It saw record enrollments in both the day and evening schools. It saw rising interest in community and church activities. Groups like the fine Chapel Choir, the determined and successful athletic teams and gospel teams continually carried the name of Ashland College with distinction to many parts of the country and added further to a successful year. Recognizing the hard work and devotion of the Editor and her staff in the compiling of this book, | wish to offer my personal congratulations to them and to speak for the students and faculty alike when | say that we all appreciate their efforts. Glenn L. Clayton President fi YY These are the people who SL4 make our College run | smoothly. E. P.
