But I believe that our new library will mean more to us than a building of books. This library will be an important tool in every phase of our campus lite-classes, sports, or- ganizations, and activities. 3 DEDICATEE This school year, l96l-62, Ashland College has seen its name and fame spread farther than any time in its history. A man largely responsible for this spreading fame came to our Hilltop four years ago. His Eagle basketball teams have com- piled a record of 53 wins and 36 losses. Three of his players have been selected for the All-Conference team, and one has been placed on the N.A.l.A. All-America team. But his crowning achievement was when our gallant Eagles forced the na- tional champion Prairie View A. SQ M. team into overtime in this year's tournament in Kansas City. Not only his excellent leadership in athletics, but also his friend- ly and helpful attitude in the classroom, on campus, and at social functions have made him one of the most popular faculty members on our campus. lt is there- fore with great pride that we, the i962 Pine Whispers staff, dedicate this year- book to our basketball coach, Mr. Robert Stokes. CLAYTON PRESlDENT'S MESSAGE The year 1961-1962 has demonstrated anew the fact that Ashland College is an exciting and worth- while experience for all who take part in her pro- gram. There was good work and scholastic achievement which brought honor and distinction to the campus, there was athletic ability which brought respect and team victories, there were visitors of distinction who added challenges and encouraged growth, and there was personal guidance which underscored moral standards and spiritual depth. ln an atmosphere of Christian friendliness, scho- lastic achievement was balanced with social and civic responsibility as campus citizens learned to live, to work, and to play together. The editor of this book and the staff have labored faithfully to present a pictorial record of activities of the year. They deserve and have our congratula- tions, upon completing this worthwhile task, and our appreciation for the long hours of work and effort. Glenn L. C. football and were backed by every loyal A. C. fan. The team was composed of many freshmen, who gained experience from the season. Only five members will be lost via graduation, but these are truly key person- nel. Graduating will be Ed Barney, halfback, Dick Scarborough, tackle, Don Moder, All Conference Honorable Mention guard, Don Roby, All Conference First Team, Cen- ter, Elwin Rickert, All Conference First Team Guard. Even though a large number of freshmen were on the Varsity, the Junior Varsity still compiled an undefeated season which makes the future look even brighter. 'I37 ii . 535 - . ,N U. nw t I H-iw . CHAMPIONS Coach Robert Stokes should be commended for the fine work he has done since coming to Ashland College. Each year the basketball team has shown improvement. The l96l-1962 squad proved to be the most successful in the history of Ashland College as the Eagles posted an overall record of 2l-4 and captured the Mid-Ohio League Championship with an ll-l mark. The starting line-up was as follows: guards, Dave Harris t6-O, Co-Captainl, and Boze Johnson l5-81, forwards Larry Aulger l6-6, Co-Captainl, and Sandy Smith l6-Ol, Center Wilbur Ritzhaupt l6-5l. Despite the Eagles' fine playing the league championship remained in doubt until the final game. ln this game, a sell out crowd saw Ashland defeat Ohio Northern by four points. Next came the N.A.l.A. post-season tournament. Ashland won the first game when Steubenville forfeited. ln the second game the Eagles defeated Defiance on a neutral court, thus earning the right to represent Ohio in the N.A.l.A. National Tournament in Kansas City. The team flew to Kansas City and was followed by about 200 fans in trains and cars. Ashland drew Prairie View A. and M. of Texas, the second seated team and according to one poll the first ranked small college team in the nation. The Eagles held the Panthers to a 2 point lead in the first half. ln the second half Ashland took the lead but the Panthers came up fast tying the score in the last few seconds of the game. In Overtime the Panthers won 73-64. The Panthers went on to win the tournament championship, their closest game being with the Eagles. Larry Aulger broke the Ashland College all-time career scoring record held by Ron Pratt H9581 of i349 points. Larry, only a iunior, will continue to add to his record nextseason. The only losses from the squad will be Dave Harris, Sandy Smith, and Larry Deffenbaugh. Thus, with a good nucleus returning and a fine Junior Varsity, the Eagles are looking forward to returning to Kansas City next season. 4 44 N A I A TOURNAMENT A.C. Their best timed run in the 880 yd. relay was 1.32, which they ran to place second at the conference meet. This was the only time our flying eagle relay team was defeated all year. The mile relay team of West, Hackett, Gil- bert, and French sprinted to a 3.31 and a fourth place finish at the conference meet. in this event the first four places broke the old conference mark. Al- though they did not compete inter- collegiately this year, they will in the near future. Their fine performance on May Day was most impressive and entertaining. WRESTLING Joe Weible, John Rodgers, Coach Busch, Ron Wolford, .lim Smyth, Don Rickett. May Day Exhibition-Dan Gartner, Otto Fabritius. Wrestling was also added to the ath- letic program for l96l-1962. Al- though no intercollegiate matches were held, the men worked hard and gained much valuable experience.
