EX LIBRIS ASHLAND COLLEGE Ashland, Ohio foreword It was an honor for me to be chosen editor of the 1956 Pine Whispers. | have tried to do a good job, but this would have been impossible without the aid and co- operation of my staff, the students, faculty, and merchants of Ashland. | wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped in any way to produce this book. To my staff | give special recognition. Kay Douglas, Editor Bus. Mgrs. Jim Firestone Jim Rowsey Photography John Keck Donald Benton Sports Al Brady Layout Earle Chandool Nancy Dorrington Shirley Fike Dixie Hyatt IN MEMORIAM Rev. Willis E. Ronk, member of the Ashland College faculty, was well-known. He was a former pastor of the Park Street Brethren Church, president of the board of directors of the Brethren Publishing Company, dean of the seminary at the college, and president of the Missionary Board. Rev. Ronk attended Ashland College and the University of Chicago and was graduated from Juniata Coll- ege with an A.B. degree. He received his B.D. degree at the Union Theological Seminary, and his Th.M. degree from Xenia College in Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the Seminary faculty he held pastorates at Clayton, Ohio, Myersdale, Pa. and Goshen, Ind. Students who were in Rev. Ronk’s classes grew to know him as a friend. The college mourns the death of its professor and extends its sympathy to his family. Do you recognize the gentleman fourth from the left? Yes, it’s our own George D onges. Pi Kappa Pi held a Homecoming tea in honor of their mothers. Here in the Home Economics room we find several members and their mothers: Back: Pat and Roberta Long and Mrs. Long. L. Front: Nancy Allmendinger and Mrs. Allmendinger, Norma Huston and Mrs. Huston, Shirley Fike and Janice Snyder. R. Front: Nancy Dorrington and Mrs. Doorington, and Shirley Klenk. Queen Dixie is about to receive a congratulatory kiss from her escort, Jack Augenstein. Fresh- man attendant Gloria Kohler is at left and ex-queen Connie Pastor and escort Tom Young are at right. A big event for Homecoming this year was the Ox Roast sponsored by the Alumni. Many enjoyed the rich, tasty meat prepared by excellent “cooks.” The top picture shows only a portion of A.C. alumni, parents and friends juicily devouring the animal. The lower picture shows the pit where the ox met his match, as well as a few of the servers. A. C. students showed great enthus- iasm this year as a new program was launched on campus — that of the World University Service, which helps to provide financial aid to foreign students for the purpose of securing a college education. Earle Chandool, a junior from Trinidad, served as chairman of the program. This is only one of the posters made by his committee. With him are Student Council president Chuck Huff, and Jim Mackall. Frosh Janet Klingensmith, Jim Garyard, and Wilbur Bowers perform for the upper- classmen in the Nest during Freshman Initiation. Jack Purtell hooks in another two points against Oberlin as Hershey and Zody move in for the rebound. The first event of the year is the Faculty Reception to acquaint the students with all the professors. At left Student Council president Chuck Huff stands at the door ready to re- ceive a group of girls. At right is a group of faculty members in the reception line. It seems the faculty doesn’t realize the amount of work it gives its students. Poor Alma is snowed under with assignments. It’s no wonder she needs a hot water bottle and a box of Alka- Seltzer. Even though the Eagles lost to Slippery Rock they played a fine game, both on offense and defense. These three Junior girls were among the Pi Kappa Pi pledges this year. Armed with paddles and a beauti- ful array of jewelry and the like, they were initiated into the fine arts club. Don’t they look pretty? _isesoatnnpnnnen reas enienenepmcbanipensnren rine? McDowell Auditorium was jumping Feb. 28 as the one and only Stan Kenton moved in for a top-notch jazz con- cert, sponsored by Student Council. “Stan, the Man,” his twenty-piece band, and song stylist Ann Richards kept feet tapping and heads nodding as he presented some of the top popular tunes of the day. Why Janice! We had no idea you were so interested in clean- ing up the campus grounds. Had you told us we’d have put more bottles on the walk for you to sweep away. True Love The Oberlin Sym- phony was once again on the Concert- Lecture list this year. It has come to be a great favorite with the student body. Page 16 Ron Pratt’s high scoring was not quite enough as Findlay edged the Eagles 80-70 Hey, Louise! Do you remember this? Note that final score please. We beat you in the all-star game didn’t we? Picture compliments of the “Louies.” PRESIDENT CLAYTON Dr. Glenn L. Clayton, president of Ashland College, has greatly expanded our campus since he took office in 1948. Alumni returning after several years gasp at the new look of the campus, all through the efforts of our president. He is responsible for securing the funds needed for new buildings and new additions of all kinds. This year we were fortunate to receive a new men’s dormitory—Jacobs Hall—with facilities for 141 men. The college has been in need of a men’s dormitory for a long time and through Dr. Clayton’s efforts we now have one of the finest. Page 18 DEANS ge LESLIE E. LINDOWER GEORGE M. Dixie’s attendants were senior Janice McClain and sopho- more Gloria Kohler. Jan comes from Savannah, Ohio and majored in Physical Education. Jim Mackall We, the Class of 1956, have seen Ashland College during four thrilling years. | Never will we forget the night Founders’ Hall burned, and all the confusion which followed it. The student union building, new Founders’ Hall, and Jacobs Hall have all been erected since we first arrived on campus. The football team thrilled the student body and created an added incentive in campus life. Not to be forgotten are the consistent baseball and basketball teams that were regular in bringing home victories. These four years will never be remembered as anything but happy and successful because of the many friends we found. We sincerely thank those who have helped to make these four years the best of our lives. Kay Kaiser Ned Boardman Chaplain Richard Kuns After surviving our first year at Ashland College we, the Sophomore class, returned to the campus with a little more self-assurance to begin our second campaign. Our most important job as a class was to initiate the incoming Freshmen. This was indeed a task and a pleasure, all of which turned out very successfully. Our Campus Clean-Up Day has been recommended to future initiation committees. Completing initiation, we settled down to a year of studies, athletics, concerts, and class government. Janet Klingensmith Social Chairmen: Darla Hanna Larry Long Chaplain: David Dillon The Freshman Class of 1956, composed of nearly two hundred students, proved to be a very enthusiastic group. Everyone cooperated to make it a very successful year. Soon after school began a meeting was held to make plans for the year. The first of these plans concerned a method of earning money for a Christmas party. It was voted that the class members would sell Christmas cards which were to be designed by Freshman Jack Johnson. This proved to be a successful undertaking and over 1,000 cards were sold. The party was held at the Miller Memorial Building one week before the Christmas holidays. During the year, five meetings were held after Chapel to discuss various plans the Cabinet had. It was voted to hold another party at Miller Memorial Hall in the spring which again was very well attended. The Cabinet wishes the class the best of luck in the future.
