school life — organizations Students can be a part of many different kinds of organizations. Among these are Student Council, National Honor Society, Drama Club, and A-Club. Two students from each class are elected to Stuco. To be in NHS a student must have and maintain a 3.2 grade point average. Any student may join Drama, but to join A-Club one must be male and out for sports. ' m w —- J L A-Club officers are Doug, president; Jeff, vice-president; Barrett, secretary; and Mr. Roper, sponsor. A-Club members have a cystic fibrosis drive every year; they also sell reserved parking places around the inside of the football field and popcorn is sold at every home game. Stuco members are (top standing) Ryan Boman, April Dome, Randi Baggs, J. R. Arnold, sponsor Frank Long. Seated Carrie Travis, Amy Crane, Maylene Freelove, vice-president; Amy George, president; Gayla McKinney, secretary; Doug Rich and Jim Steele. The three officiers are seniors elected by petitioning the student body. Four new members were inducted into NHS on December 1, 1987 in the high school library at 7:30 p.m. President Amy C. presented the Introduction and Service, one of the four characteristics for membership. Character: Donna Osborn, secretary; Scholarship: Amy G, vice-president; Leadership: Karen Isenbart. Doug, treasurer could not attend; he was having knee surgery. school life — honors Honors come to AHS students in a variety of ways. Those making the first semester honor rolls are named in the yearbook. Requirements are a 3.75 or higher average with no C’s for the A Honor Roll, and 2.85 or higher average with no D’s for the B Honor Roll. Principal Dean Schultz instituted a new Honor Roll, the Progressive Honor Roll. A contract between him and the student vows that the grade in one class will be raised while grades in all other classes will not fall. This is on a nine-week basis only. Students also may try out and be selected for the Quiz Bowl Team. Another way to earn honors is to represent the school at the Academic Olympics. Teachers select students to represent their individual classes. Kansas University Alumni Association and KU Endowment Association honor the top senior students in Kansas high schools. Sophomores: Stacy Barth, Franie Boushie, and Leslie Rich. Freshmen: Ryan Roman, Jeff Dome, Eric Gibson, Mike Lind. Brandy Raymond. Karen White, Jo-lie Wyatt, and Shane Betschart. Junior and senior high students making the first semester A and R honor rolls were treated to a banquet at the Ranch House February 1, courtesy USD 220. Nearly perfect attendance was recorded from the 68 who qualified. Adults present were Supt. and Mrs. Dale Moody, Jr.-Sr. High Principal and Mrs. Dean Schultz, Miss Jane Shreve, sponsor. National Honor Society, and the guest speaker, Jeff Hiers, Dodge City. Mr. Hiers (above) gave a funny but inspirational talk on “always doing the best you can and success requires work.” 26
