For this reason, the ’87-88 annual staff chose “Variety” as the theme. There are many unique people here at A.H.S.; so as you read through this book, notice the variety. 1 seniors live it up CMdtfl c3a r §$ l iff ndn There is a variety of personalities in the senior class. Some spend time studying, preparing for the future; while others stick together with their friends; and then there are those who would rather just goof off. Far Right: Loran Luther and Barrett seem pleased as they watch the outcome of a tennis match. Above: Keith, Jeff, Loran, and Barrett act as if they don’t have enough homework to keep them busy during 6th hour study hall. Do they? Right: Keith and Barrett hustle down the hall so they can make it to class before the bell rings. Right: Jeff, a tennis spectator, has only one problem: Keith is standing in his view. 2 seniors Top Left: Deidra Maggard and Amy dress up like Santa Claus. Is it Christmas? Above: Karen Isenbart, Maylene, Susan Harper, Amy, and Deidra stick together through thick and thin like good friends should. Left: Randy is a student by day and protects our country by night. Randy is in the National Guard and spends one weekend a month in Dodge City, Kansas working for our Country. 3 seniors Various classes and activities seniors take include physiology, cross country, yearbook, home economics, bookkeeping, and family living. Susan Harper (right) gets asked a question in physiology. Gayla McKinney and May-lene Freelove (far right) run all over town in preparation for cross country meets to come. Deidra Maggard (center, left) says “Cheese” to the camera. Jeff Berryman and Keith Baker (center, right) take their turn cleaning the stove in their unit in home economics. Gayla (below, left) takes a break from all the calculating in accounting to look with astonishment at the camera. Amy Crane and Deidra (below, right) talk about their lives after graduation. 4 seniors Jeff Berryman (far left) has a masterpiece of a makeup job done on his face by the second-hour speech class. Heather Moore (left) stands with anticipation to have her picture taken. Rodney Lynn and Matt Wilson (center, left) relax and catch a cat nap to survive the hours to come. Amy Crane (center, right) hands out cakes to the lucky winners at a senior class cake auction held at a football game. Keith Baker (far left) ponders about the instructions on how to make an angel food cake during fourth hour home economics. Richard Mosshart (left) had his picture taken by the all-school photographer as well as the special seniors-only-in-color. 5 seniors Many seniors have a variety of things they do. Some are still getting over summer vacation; others have deadlines they need to meet; a few work on getting credits they need to graduate; and then there are the others who just relax or take a breather while working on their studies. Amy served as Student Council President for 1987-88, though one of the newer members of the class. Originally from Texas, she moved to Ashland 3 years ago. Susan (right) appears to be having a good time on her vacation which took her and her family to St. Louis, Missouri where her grandfather lives. Angie is a part-time student who attends four hours a day. 6 tkl V jfcpJ DdVi i Karen concentrates during her fifth hour bookkeeping course while working on her assignment. This class will help her earn credits in order to get her diploma. Loran (above right) glides down the hall during sixth hour study hall. Does he have a hall pass? Rodney (right) takes a breather in the library during last hour study hall. 7 seniors There is a variety of things for the senior class to do, from class meetings to dressing up, studying, office work, and sometimes just wondering what is going on. Keith Baker (above) takes time out of his busy schedule of College Prep, Speech I, Government, Home Economics, Advanced Physical Education, Study Hall, and Mechanics to study quietly in the library, while Loran Luther looks intently at a magazine. Amy George (right) poses half hearted-ly while being a teacher’s aide during lunch while Debbie Dome is in the cafeteria. Gayla McKinney (far right) flashes her pearly whites; as you can tell by her sweatshirt, she’s a Bluejay fan. Keith, Barrett Broadie, Susan Harper, Donna Osborn, Heather Moore, Loran, Amy Crane, and Kim Nusz listen intently so they can order their senior announcements correctly. 8 seniors Richard Mosshart (far left) looks up from an important project to figure out what’s going on! Heather Moore (left) shows the artistic ability of the second-hour speech class by showing off her makeup that they put on for Halloween. Rod Young wanders away from his sixth hour class (General Science) into sixth hour art class to get caught up on all the latest gossip. Doug Rich (below) takes a breather from his work in the drafting room. 9 seniors Ctfppii 1 1. Left: Deidra’s keeping cool in Dodge City at the Yearbook Conference. Carrie (above) seems puzzled as what to do next in 6th hour journal- Gayla (above) works hard to get her homework done so she can keep up her good grades. Gayla also enjoys sports, such as cross country, basketball, shotput and discus. She placed 2nd in discus and 4th in shot at the 1987 1A State Meet. 10 seniors Heather shows her artistic ability during 6th hour art class as she works on her “party peoples’ celebration.’’ Heather has been in art for three years. She has also participated in basketball for four years, tennis four years, and track for three years. Richard makes a change during 6th hour art class to make his abstract pencil drawing as close to perfect as he can get it. Doug sands away on his project in woods. He is making a water bed frame for his personal use. Doug represents the senior class on the Student Council and is National Honor Society treasurer. 11 seniors Ashland High School has a variety of classes and faces. The people who attend also have a variety of personalities and goals for their futures. The seniors are on that last step to release them into the large world with everything to offer. They work hard in their classes to reach that final goal, graduation. Although seniors spend a lot of their time working on their studies, they can often be caught having fun or goofing off. Senior Maylene Freelove (right) leads the junior-senior high marching band during football half-time entertainment. She has been the drum majorette for three years. to brighten everyone’s day by making them laugh. Keith Baker (above) seems to know exactly what he wants as he chooses his senior memory book, announcements, and key. Deidra Maggard (left), a second-year member of the annual staff, gives a “beginner” some advice. 12 seniors Gayla McKinney (far left) takes a break from her studies to relax. She is involved with many classes since this is her last year. Gayla enjoys the sports and extra activities that are provided. Her schedule includes English, Government, Library Science, Bookkeeping, Study Hall, and Physiology. Susan Harper and Heather Moore (above right) hustle down the hall so they can get to class on time. Susan’s schedule involves these classes: English, Speech, Study Hall, Government, Physical Education, Physiology, and Computer Science. Heather’s schedule provides her to be able to take English, Speech, Teacher’s Aide for Mr. Rich, Government, Physical Education, Art, and Physiology. Seniors vote on what type of design for graduation announcements they should have. Those in favor are Randy Conry, Richard Mosshart, Heather, Susan, Keith Baker, Amy Crane, Deidra Maggard, and Donna Osborn. By vote, they select three designs. Then a majority of the class members must choose one design from the three. 13 seniors The senior class is a variety of many people. It is unique because it is currently the largest class here at AHS and has been since 1985. It is a very sports minded class, too. Most of them have participated in football, basketball, track, tennis, golf, and cross country. Academically, it ranks high also. A large percentage of them have achieved honors of some kind: being on the honor roll, being on the quiz bowl team., going to Academic Olympics, and being in National Honor Society. The seniors have a variety of plans for the future. Some of them plan for marriage, for college, for military service, and some plan for working. Donna Osborn (right) is caught off guard while made up for the Halloween game last year when the ’86-87 cheerleaders asked all former cheerleaders to cheer with them. “Donna, you look funny!” Martha Jantzen (below), a new face around the halls, transferred here from Wichita in the middle of October with her family. Her major is Secretarial Business and she would like to be employed in a small town office. Laura Stevens tries to act busy in sixth hour annual class. She is a second year staff member, and a real help to the rookies who are enrolled in the class. 14 seniors Sherry Suire (left) one of the students in sixth hour woodworking, sands the lazy susan she is making. Rod Young (above) helps with a lab experiment in Mr. Lenz’s sixth hour science class. Matt Wilson and Keith Baker are caught relaxing in the library. Is Matt trying to remember something by counting on his fingers? Keith is totally absorbed in his magazine. Both follow the rules for using the lounge furniture: NO FEET and NO SLEEPING! 15 staff make it happen! The School Board and staff combine to attend to the business of running the school district, taking care of tasks, such as planning budget, setting curriculum, hiring teachers and staff, directing classroom learning, coaching athletics, and sponsoring activities. The staff keeps busy August through May with the school activities. The 1987-88 school board members Dena Allison, Bill Rich, Doug Inderlied, Leanne Pike, president; Aaron Bates, vice president; Charles McKinney, and Harry Walker (not pictured) all work together to make the USD 220 school system run smoothly. Dale Moody (far left), superintendent, dressed casually for the BYOB (Bring Your Own Banana) banana split party for all staff members after a football game. Dean Schultz (left) transferred here this year from Kingman to be the junior and senior high principal. Debbie Daily (left) has been the superintendent’s secretary for five years, keeping books and the school budget for the year; she is also Clerk of the Board, taking minutes at all Board meetings and signing checks. Debbie Dome (above) is the school secretary and also the principal’s secretary. Some of the things that she does is put records on the computers, makes the daily bulletins, and makes signs and banners on the computer. 17 staff Teachers have a variety of jobs to do. They teach junior and senior high students, stay after school to help students, or work detention. They also develop lesson plans, order text books and supplies, and help with athletic contests. Duane Coats Tom Gilmore Leland Hill Steve Lenz Frank Long Brian McVay Mr. Hill (above) takes a break from one of his classes. He teaches junior and senior high English and senior high journalism. Mr. Lenz (right) spends time that he is not teaching grading papers. Mr. McVay (far right) shows his excellent ability while directing the band during one of the half-time shows. 18 staff Teachers have a variety of classes to sponsor. Mr. Rich and Mr. Roper sponsor the A-Club, Mr. McVay along with Mr. Shultz sponsors the senior class, Mr. Lenz and Mr. Roper sponsor the junior class, and Mr. Long sponsors the Student Council. Robin Mollhagen Larry Rich Dwight Roper Ken Swanson Deloras Baker Barbara Gillaspie Mrs. Doris Scott (above) was the teacher for the gifted program second semester. Mrs. Gillaspie had that responsibility first semester. They were assigned one day a week, Friday. Mr. Swanson (far left) a member of the staff for 31 years, teaches junior and senior high math. Mr. Roper (above) teaches social science. This is his second year teaching at Ashland. 19 staff Teachers spend more time at school than students do. They come early and stay late for things such as play practice, quiz bowl practice, or detention. They also take their classes on trips, like speech contests, art shows, quiz bowl meets, and home economics class grocery shopping. The yearbook staff went to a yearbook conference at Dodge City. Teachers also work at the gates selling tickets for games. Teachers are assigned a class sponsorship beginning with a 7th grade class, following through until that class graduates. Sponsors are Seniors — Dean Schultz, Brian McVay. Juniors — Steve Lenz, Dwight Roper. Sophomores — Anna Jean Wilson, Beverly York. Freshmen — Deloras Baker. 8th Grade — Linda Wilson. 7th Grade — Sally McQuade. Lucille Newby, L.D. Instructor. Linda Wilson, art and Voc. Judy Park replaced Gayle Randles, who moved to Sublette. The school board purchased a salad bar for the cafeteria. Used two or three times a week, it gives the students, faculty, and cooks a varied menu. This replaces the individual salad requests, and features several different potato toppings. staff The staff is a great help to the students and to everyone. They have certain jobs that they do ... the cooks cook meals for the entire school system, the custodians keep the school “squeaky clean,” and the bus drivers drive the students to wherever they need to go: vocal contests, basketball games, football games, or class trips. They also get special privileges such as not having to pay to attend school activities. They are issued a pass that will get them into games and other school functions. The custodians play an important part in the school system. Norma Suire (left) keeps the typing room tidied up. Anita McGonigle also helps do the cleaning. Eric Braman is the maintenance man. The bus drivers also have an important role. The yearbook staff went to Englewood to be sure that Mary Jane Isenbart and Eldean Mings were pictured. Kenny York (above left) and Melba Swanson (above right) are special bus drivers. Kenny drives activity busses only, while Melba drives the Special Education students to Meade. Mary Isenbart and Eldean Mings are special drivers, too; they pick up students who live west of Englewood and take them to meet the Englewood bus. Among these are Student Council, National Honor Society, Drama Club, and A-Club. Two students from each class are elected to Stuco. To be in NHS a student must have and maintain a 3.2 grade point average. Any student may join Drama, but to join A-Club one must be male and out for sports. ' m w —- J L A-Club officers are Doug, president; Jeff, vice-president; Barrett, secretary; and Mr. Roper, sponsor. A-Club members have a cystic fibrosis drive every year; they also sell reserved parking places around the inside of the football field and popcorn is sold at every home game. Stuco members are (top standing) Ryan Boman, April Dome, Randi Baggs, J. R. Arnold, sponsor Frank Long. Seated Carrie Travis, Amy Crane, Maylene Freelove, vice-president; Amy George, president; Gayla McKinney, secretary; Doug Rich and Jim Steele. The three officiers are seniors elected by petitioning the student body. Four new members were inducted into NHS on December 1, 1987 in the high school library at 7:30 p.m. President Amy C. presented the Introduction and Service, one of the four characteristics for membership. Character: Donna Osborn, secretary; Scholarship: Amy G, vice-president; Leadership: Karen Isenbart. Doug, treasurer could not attend; he was having knee surgery. Those making the first semester honor rolls are named in the yearbook. Requirements are a 3.75 or higher average with no C’s for the A Honor Roll, and 2.85 or higher average with no D’s for the B Honor Roll. Principal Dean Schultz instituted a new Honor Roll, the Progressive Honor Roll. A contract between him and the student vows that the grade in one class will be raised while grades in all other classes will not fall. This is on a nine-week basis only. Students also may try out and be selected for the Quiz Bowl Team. Another way to earn honors is to represent the school at the Academic Olympics. Teachers select students to represent their individual classes. Kansas University Alumni Association and KU Endowment Association honor the top senior students in Kansas high schools. Eight high school students made the A Honor Roll for the first semester. They are (top) seniors Amy Crane. Donna Osborn, and Karen Isenbart (seated), and freshmen April Dome and David Pike. Lance Walker, junior. Laura Ward and Lisa Kasner. sophomores (standing). Karen and Donna. joined by Doug Rich, attended the February 15 dinner at the Silver Spur Convention Center as KU Alumni honored seniors. B Honor Roll students were seniors Keith Baker. They took a school bus to Wichita, a chartered bus to Kansas City, then flew to Chicago. They toured the Sears Tower, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, and the Chicago Board of Trade. Seniors making the trip were Laura Stevens, Heather Moore, and Susan Harper (seated, front); Martha Jantzen, Matt Wilson, Amy Crane, Doug Rich, Maylene Freelove, Donna Osborn, Karen Isenbart, Jeff Berryman, and Barrett Broadie (second row); Sherry Suire Wyatt, Loran Luther, Keith Baker, Deidra Maggard, Richard Mosshart, and Gayla McKinney (top). Mr. and Mrs. Terry Eubank were the accompanying parents along with class sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schultz and Mr. and Mrs. Brian McVay. The Chicago skyline fascinated the “plainsmen.” Annual staff photographer Laura got herself in the picture along with Martha in the mirrored elevator at their motel. Donna and Deidra cut up as they wait for their plane; Keith, Jeff, Richard, and Barrett seem to engage in more serious conversation. Jeff Berryman and mother Sue, dressed in Roman fashion (above), hosted the annual senior brunch May 13. The Class Motto provided the theme for the event. Other senior mothers prepared the food, served on the terrace. Chan Berryman video taped the gathering. 29 school life — graduation Graduates are: Jeff Berryman, Amy George, Doug Rich, Barrett Broadie, Mary-lene Freelove, Matt Wilson, and Randy Conry. Coach McMinimy said they played “Gone With the Wind.” At the Ness City meet, the wind was blowing 30 miles per hour; at Cimarron, 25 mph; and at Ashland, 55 mph. It was difficult, to say the least, even if Lee Travino says “The more I practice the luckier I get.” They also had a meet at Kinsley. 54 inspirational athletes Most Inspirational Athletes — Gayla McKinney and Doug Rich — showing off the coveted trophies. Doug competed in football, basketball, and track. The cheerleaders had a variety of activities for the band, teachers, and students to do during football and basketball pep assemblies. The sixth grade class presented a skit re-enacting the move from the old building to the new. Special guests included former custodians, teacher aides, office clerks, faculty and students. Pictures of former years were displayed. Since its occupation in 1937, many students have come and gone, but the building stayed the same until this year. Major improvements included new fixtures in the restrooms and the replacement of the windows and doors with more energy efficient ones. Wooden jungle gym equipment has replaced the old slippery slides and an asphalt playing surface with basketball hoops were playground changes. New energy-saving doors and windows were the first major improvements since the school was built 50 years ago. Another change in 50 years is transportation. About half of the students ride the bus and all but the kindergarten class are bussed to the high school cafetorium for lunch. Grade school staff are Gilbert Park, principal; Rita Free-love, secretary; Beverly Gilmore, reading specialist and kindergarten music; Susan Edmonston, librarian and teacher aide; Mike Post, custodian; Ron Roe, clinical psychologist; Jan Fast, music; Erin Kirkland, speech specialist; and Jo Chebultz, school psychologist. 62 6th Grade Cody Betschart Angela Dome Chad Dome •Jason Gibson Bryan Graff Amanda Hendricks Natalie Mages Nathan Mages Alyson McCartv Chuck Miller Drew Pike Josie Pike Justin Schweitzer Tamie Smith Daniel Stein Chris Stephens Kit Walker Frank White Dianna Hass. Kelly Brown earned three, Traci Kaltenbach and Heather Moore earned two, and Gary Braman, Rhett Bouziden, and Franie Boushie each earned one. Events not pictured are the USD 220 Board dinner prepared by the Home Ec class and the NHS field trip to Wichita. Ms. Wilson waves farewell to teaching the Annual staff. She has taught the AHS annual class for 10 years, typing and bookkeeping for 11 years, and also has taught office practice and shorthand. On May 2, the annual staff threw Ms. Wilson a surprise birthday party, which included cake, lemonade, and a card signed by many students and teachers. Many thanks from the Annual staff to Jostens (Kelly Wright, representative) for their advice and patience; Rita Freelove for identifying K-6 panel pictures; Marquise Studio, Inc. for taking group pictures in the fall; and to all tne teachers, staff and students for their co-operation during picture-taking time. 80 SENIORS • KEITH BAKER • JEFF BERRYMAN • BARRETT BROADIE • AMY CRANE • RANDY CONRY • MAYLENE FREELOVE • AMYGEORGE ANGELAGIBSON • SUSAN HARPER KAREN ISENBART• MARTHA JANTZEN • LORAN LUTHER • RODNEY LYNN • DEIDRA MAGGARD • CARRIE MCGONIGLE • GAYLA MCKINNEY • HEATHER MOORE • RICHARD MOSSHART DOUG RICH • DONNAOSBORN • LAURA STEVENS SHERRYSUIRE MATT WILSON • ROD YOUNG • JUNIORS • JAMES ALLEN • RHETT BOUZIDEN • GARY BRAMAN • KELLYBROWN • CHRIS GILLESPIE • BRYAN ISENBART TRACI KALTENBACH • DARREN LECLEAR KATRINA LIND • BRIAN MCGONIGLE • BRENDA MCVICKER • SHERRY MILLER • BEV MINGS • MONTI PARK • BRENDA PRICE • TRACY ROLLINS • KIP SCHULTZ • RAY SCHWEITZER • JIM STEELE • RHONDA STRANG CARRIETRAVIS LANCE WALKER JASON WYATT SOPHOMORES J.R.
