Student Council Makes Decisions Student Council has many, responsibilities: furnishing the flowers and crown for homecoming and sweetheart, choosing the flower girls and crown bearer, deciding what music to hire and how much to charge for dances, and management of the pop machine. In the spring, students petition the student body for the office of their choice: president, vice president, or secretary-treasurer. They run a campaign, giving preelection speeches at an assembly. An all-school election determines the officers for the following year. For regular members, each club and organization elects one representative, and each class selects two. Stuco members from left front are Rafe Messer (vocal music), Mark Tuttle (senior class), Jana Preisner (senior class), Carrie Travis (freshman class), Brett Bates (A-Club), Kim Mason (elected secretary-treasurer), Joe Smyth (elected president). Dee Reed (vice president and National Honor Society), Karen Isenbart (sophomore class), Frank Long (sponsor), Trent Dome (junior class), Doug Rich (sophomore class), Lance Walker (band), and Chris Gillespie (freshman class). Dee, runnerup in the campaign for Student Council vice president, replaced the winner who did not re-enroll in AHS this year. Stuco officers Kim, Joe, and Dee and Mr. Long went to a League Stuco meeting September 4 to develop better relationships among League members. Out of this meeting came a new League sportsmanship policy. A school is rated and can win a sportsmanship trophy which will be awarded at the League basketball tournament. 28 Student Council

Scholars Honored — NHS Membership Members of the National Honor Society are (standing from left) Joe Smyth, Teri Walker, Heather Berryman, Dee Reed, all seniors, and Jane Shreve, sponsor. Newly inducted members (seated) are Shauna Betschart, Dan Heath, Tonya Ediger, Clint Daily, Elizabeth Fellers, and Trent Dome, all juniors. In order for new members to be accepted into NHS, a 3.3 average is required; to stay in, a member must maintain a 3.0 average. President Dee Reed (left) introduced the program by welcoming the guests — friends, family, and faculty members. The November 21 ceremony, held in the library instead of the cafetor-ium as in the past, consisted of the Interpretation of the Four Characteristics of Membership and the presentation of certificates and pins. The officers presented the four characteristics: Vice President Heather, Character ; President Dee, Scholarship ; Secretary Teri, Leadership , and Treasurer Joe, Service. Mr. Garlon Jarnagin, high school principal, assisted sponsor Shreve in presenting the membership certificates and pins to the inductees. After the ceremony, guests and members were served punch and cookies by the officers. Mr. Jarnagin, far left, observed the visiting during refreshment time. M National Honor Society
